Astyanax filiferus was originally placed in the genus Zygogaster when Carl H. Eigenmann described it in 1913 in Indiana University Studies No. 18 — a contribution arising from his ichthyological reconnaissance of Colombia. The holotype is catalogued as CAS 62258 (formerly IU 12847) and the type locality is Apulo, Colombia, in the Magdalena basin. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the current valid name as Astyanax filiferus (Eigenmann, 1913), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the transfer from Zygogaster to Astyanax.
The taxonomic placement of Astyanax filiferus within the broader Characidae sensu lato has occasionally been discussed in the context of subfamily-level reorganisations; Eschmeyer's Catalog notes Acestrorhamphidae as the family assignment used in some authorities, while the IUCN assessment and GBIF treat the species under Characidae. This article follows the IUCN and GBIF usage. Astyanax itself is one of the largest genera of Neotropical characids, encompassing several hundred described species distributed across Central and South America.
Morphology
The most distinctive external feature of Astyanax filiferus is the elongation of the outer fin rays, particularly in the dorsal and caudal fins, which are drawn out into slender filiform extensions — the character directly referenced by the species epithet. This thread-like prolongation of fin rays is unusual within the genus and sets filiferus apart from the majority of its congeners at a glance.

Habitat
Astyanax filiferus is endemic to Colombia, known from the Magdalena and Atrato river basins. These two drainages drain opposite slopes of the Cordillera Occidental — the Magdalena flowing south-to-north through the central inter-Andean valley to the Caribbean, and the Atrato draining northwestward through Chocó to the Gulf of Urabá. The type locality of Apulo lies in the upper-middle Magdalena drainage in Cundinamarca.
The IUCN assessment describes the preferred habitat as rivers and creeks of intermediate size with rocky and sandy bottoms, a niche characteristic of the moderate-gradient reaches of the Andean piedmont and lowland transition zones. The species is noted as apparently rare within its range, with population trend unknown. Feeding

Should specimens become available to researchers or specialist hobbyists, the care template of small Colombian Astyanax species would be the starting point: a well-oxygenated, moderately soft-to-hard water setup replicating the rocky-creek conditions of the Magdalena piedmont, a temperature range consistent with Colombian mid-elevation rivers (approximately 68–79 °F), a school of six or more individuals, and a diet of small live and frozen invertebrates supplemented with good-quality prepared foods. The distinctive filiform fin extensions would make a condition-conditioned adult an attractive oddity in a species tank for those able to source it through scientific exchange.
Conservation
Astyanax filiferus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2016 based on an evaluation conducted on 9 October 2014. The listing reflects the absence of evidence of rapid population decline sufficient to qualify under threatened categories, rather than evidence of strong population health: the IUCN assessment notes that the population appears rare and that trend data are unknown.
The species' endemic range in the Magdalena and Atrato basins of Colombia places it within watersheds subject to substantial anthropogenic pressure. Artisanal and illegal gold mining in both basins introduces mercury contamination and destroys riparian and channel habitats; deforestation in the Andean foothills reduces the buffering capacity of stream margins and increases erosion and siltation. The rocky-bottom creek habitats the species occupies are particularly sensitive to increased suspended sediment loads.
