Raddaella batesii is a small, non-annual killifish from the Congo Basin and southern Cameroon, inhabiting the raffia swamps, shallow forest pools, and slow-flowing rainforest brooks of equatorial Central Africa. Reaching around 2.5 in, it belongs to a genus erected in 2010 to accommodate species that sit outside the core Aphyosemion sensu stricto lineage, and it remains one of the less frequently collected West and Central African killies — present in specialist collections largely through Congo Basin expeditions carrying RC and EQG collection codes. The IUCN has not formally evaluated the species, but the fragmented, forest-dependent habitats it occupies across the Congo and lower Ubangui drainages place it squarely among the African killies that merit closer conservation attention as equatorial forests face increasing pressure.

Taxonomy & naming

George Albert Boulenger described this species in 1911 as Aphyosemion batesii, publishing the account in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History (volume 8, number 44, pages 260–268) under the title 'Description of new African Cyprinodont Fishes'. The type locality is the Sangha River, a major left-bank tributary of the Congo (then called the Zaïre) River, near the town of Ouesso in northern Congo — a site that remains a reference point for Congo Basin killifish collections to this day. The species epithet honours George Latimer Bates, the American ornithologist and naturalist who collected extensively in Cameroon and whose specimens formed the basis of many early Central African fish descriptions.

The genus Raddaella was erected in 2010 by Radda and Wildekamp (published in Annalen des Naturhistorischen Museums in Wien, 86(2):337–341) to accommodate a cluster of Aphyosemion-like species that molecular and morphological analyses showed to be phylogenetically distinct from the Aphyosemion core. Under the current treatment in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the valid name is Raddaella batesii (Boulenger, 1911), with the parentheses indicating that the species was originally described under a different genus. Two junior synonyms were erected by Ernst Ahl in 1924 — Raddaella beauforti and Raddaella gustavi — both now sunk under batesii; additional synonym combinations in the earlier literature include Fundulus batesii and Fundulopanchax batesii, reflecting the reclassification history typical of the West African killifish assemblage.

In the hobby the species is encountered primarily through field-collected material bearing Congo Basin collection codes such as RC 2016/2 (collected by Leendert van den Berg) and EQG 06/2 from Equatorial Guinea populations — the use of expedition codes to track distinct wild populations is standard practice in killifish husbandry and reflects the appreciation among specialists that geographic provenance carries biological meaning.

Morphology

Raddaella batesii is a slender, elongate killifish reaching approximately 2.5 in total length, with males typically somewhat smaller than the maximum and females slightly more robust in the body. Like other members of its genus and the broader Aphyosemion alliance, it displays the streamlined, laterally compressed profile characteristic of plant-spawning West and Central African killies — a body plan suited to navigating dense aquatic vegetation and root masses in slow water.

Males carry the vivid colouration typical of the group: a turquoise to blue-green body overlaid with rows of red to rust-orange spots or streaks, with the dorsal and caudal fins often edged in yellow or red. Females are considerably plainer — brownish or olive with subdued or absent spotting — a marked sexual dimorphism that is the norm across the non-annual African killifish. The finnage in males is relatively pointed and extended compared to the rounded, shorter fins of females. Precise meristic data for this species is sparse in the accessible literature; the general Raddaella body plan is consistent with congeners, and collection notes do not record unusual morphological features distinguishing it from nearby species.

Habitat

In the wild, Raddaella batesii occupies raffia swamps, shallow stagnant forest pools, and slow-moving to nearly static rainforest brooks across the Congo Basin and adjacent drainages. Collection records span the Sangha River watershed in northern Congo (the type locality), lower Ubangui River tributaries, southern Cameroon localities including Abong-Mbang, Awae, Ayos, Bitye, Djenasoumé, and Djoum, and Equatorial Guinea populations documented by the EQG 06/2 expedition code. This is equatorial rainforest terrain: closed-canopy forest with heavily shaded waterbodies, abundant leaf litter, and dense marginal and aquatic vegetation.

Water chemistry data from the American Killifish Association records natural conditions of pH 4.2–6.8 with a general hardness of 0.1–1.0 dGH — extremely soft, markedly acidic, and tannin-stained water typical of west-central African forest streams. These are blackwater or near-blackwater environments where humic and fulvic acids leach from decaying vegetation, conductivity is very low, and dissolved oxygen levels may be reduced by still conditions. The fish is thus adapted to water chemistry at the acidic extreme of the freshwater spectrum, and this should be reflected in aquarium maintenance.

Feeding

Like virtually all non-annual African killies in the Aphyosemion alliance, Raddaella batesii is a generalist predator of small invertebrates in the wild. In forest pools and raffia swamps it preys on aquatic and terrestrial insects, insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and similar invertebrate prey that falls onto or lives in the water column. The low-productivity, soft-acid waters it inhabits support comparatively sparse invertebrate communities, so the fish is an active, opportunistic feeder.

In the aquarium, the species accepts live and frozen invertebrate foods readily — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm, Tubifex, and small earthworm pieces are all taken. Small dry foods of appropriate size may be accepted by acclimatised fish, though live and frozen foods produce the best condition and colour. Given the small adult size (around 2.5 in), food items must be scaled accordingly; large chunks will be ignored or spat out. Feeding twice daily in moderate quantities, with variety across food types, meets the species' needs.

Mating

Raddaella batesii is a non-annual killifish and reproduces as a plant spawner: the pair deposit small batches of adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic plants, floating plant roots, or artificial spawning mops over an extended period rather than in a single mass-spawning event. This mode — characteristic of the non-annual west-central African killifish that inhabit permanent or semi-permanent water — contrasts sharply with the diapausing-egg strategy of annual killifish from seasonal savanna pools. There is no diapause, no peat burial, and no dormancy requirement in the eggs of Raddaella batesii.

Males court females with lateral displays and fin-spreading, directing females toward spawning sites among dense vegetation or mop fibres. The courtship is generally active but not aggressive to the point of damaging females; in adequate space, a single male can be kept with multiple females. Pairs spawn repeatedly across days and weeks, depositing a few eggs per session in the typical plant-spawner pattern. The species is not a prolific spawner by killifish standards, which, combined with its relatively limited natural distribution and specific habitat requirements, makes careful breeding management worthwhile for those maintaining it in the hobby.

Breeding

Eggs are deposited individually or in very small clutches on plant leaves, moss, or the fibres of a floating mop, to which they adhere via a short filament or sticky coating. Incubation takes place in water at ambient temperature — typically 10–18 days at the warmer end of the recommended range. Eggs should be checked regularly and any that turn white (unfertilised or fungused) removed to prevent spread. A small amount of methylene blue or acriflavine in the incubation water helps suppress fungal infection without harming developing embryos.

Fry are tiny at hatching — typical of the genus — and require infusoria, Paramecium, or very fine commercial fry food as a first food for the initial days. They advance quickly to newly hatched Artemia nauplii and microworm within the first week. Growth is steady but not especially rapid; juveniles should be raised in soft, slightly acidic water consistent with the parents' requirements. Separating the breeding pair or regularly harvesting mops every one to two weeks and moving fry to a rearing vessel is the standard approach, as adults will consume eggs and fry opportunistically.

In the aquarium

Raddaella batesii is an appealing specialist fish for the killifish hobbyist rather than a general community aquarium species. A pair or trio (one male, two females) is appropriately housed in a tank of 10–15 US gal, densely planted with fine-leaved species (Java moss, Ceratopteris, Microsorum) or fitted with floating mops to provide spawning sites and visual refuge. The tank must be covered securely — like all killies, this species is an accomplished jumper.

Water chemistry should reflect the species' acidic, very soft natural conditions: pH 5.5–7.0, hardness under 5 dGH, and temperature 72–79 °F are appropriate targets. Peat filtration, the use of reverse-osmosis water, or the addition of botanicals (dried leaves, alder cones) to acidify and soften will replicate the tannin-stained, low-conductivity character of its native forest streams and likely promote better colour and breeding success. Strong current is neither natural nor desirable; gentle flow from a small sponge filter suffices and avoids disturbing the mops or fine plants.

The species is peaceful toward tankmates of similar size but should not be kept with larger fish that might harass or predate it. In a killifish setup it can share space with small tetras, pygmy corydoras, or other non-annual killies of comparable temperament, though dedicated breeding efforts are best conducted in a species-only vessel. Raddaella batesii is infrequently available in the trade and is primarily maintained by specialist killifish clubs and hobbyists; acquisition through the American Killifish Association, the British Killifish Association, or equivalent national societies is the most reliable route.

Conservation

Raddaella batesii has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN Red List. Its native range lies within the Congo Basin rainforest biome — one of Earth's most extensive tropical forest systems — and spans parts of the Republic of Congo, Cameroon, and Equatorial Guinea. While this broad footprint across multiple countries might suggest resilience, the species' specific microhabitat requirements (raffia swamps, stagnant forest pools, shallow tannin-stained brooks) make it dependent on intact forest canopy and undisturbed drainage systems.

The pressures bearing on equatorial Central African forest habitats are well documented: commercial and artisanal logging, agricultural expansion, road construction, and charcoal production are reducing forest cover across the Congo Basin at increasing rates. Raffia palm swamps — a key habitat for this and related species — are particularly vulnerable to drainage and clearance. Collection pressure from the killifish hobby appears low compared to these landscape-scale threats, given the species' rarity in the trade and the small numbers involved in any collection event.

No population-level data exist for this species and no monitoring programme is known to track it. Given the general trend of habitat degradation across west-central African forest systems and the species' reliance on intact forest hydrology, an IUCN assessment would be a valuable first step toward understanding whether wild populations face meaningful risk. In the interim, the maintenance of genetically tracked captive populations through killifish societies — with collection-code provenance preserved — represents a modest but meaningful insurance policy.
