Simpsonichthys cholopteryx was formally described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa, Carlos Roberto Moreira, and Flávio C. T. Lima in 2003, in Aqua, Journal of Ichthyology and Aquatic Biology (volume 6, number 4), from specimens collected near Alto Araguaia, Mato Grosso, Brazil — a site in the upper Rio Araguaia drainage of the central Brazilian plateau. The authority on the valid name is recorded in parentheses — (Costa & Brasil, 1990) — following Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes convention to indicate that the name has been transferred from its original placement. The family is Rivulidae and the subfamily Cynolebiatinae, which encompasses the South American annual killifishes.
A comprehensive taxonomic revision of the genus Simpsonichthys by Costa (2007), published in Zootaxa 1669, reorganised the genus into five subgenera and placed S. cholopteryx within the nominotypical subgenus Simpsonichthys, a grouping characterised by distribution across the central Brazilian plateau — spanning the upper Paraná, upper Araguaia, and upper São Francisco basins. The revision confirmed the annual habit and temporary-pool ecology as defining traits shared across all members of the subgenus. The genus Simpsonichthys is named in honour of American ichthyologist Victor T. Simpson.
Morphology
Simpsonichthys cholopteryx is a small fish, reaching a maximum of approximately 1 in standard length (SL) — placing it firmly in the dwarf range for the genus. Like other Simpsonichthys, the body is laterally compressed and deep relative to length, with a blunt snout and an upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding. The specific epithet cholopteryx references the fin morphology: the name combines Greek roots relating to truncated or distinctive fin structure.
Males are considerably more colourful than females, displaying the vivid pigmentation typical of annual Rivulids: a base of blues and greens on the flanks overlaid with red, orange, or yellow spotting or striping, with similarly patterned unpaired fins. Females are cryptically coloured in pale browns and olive tones, often with dark speckling. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced, as expected in a species where males compete intensely during the brief reproductive window of the annual wet season. The eggs are notably large relative to body size, an adaptation that provides yolk reserves sufficient for the hatchlings to feed on Artemia nauplii immediately after emerging.
Habitat
The natural habitat of Simpsonichthys cholopteryx is confined to seasonal, isolated freshwater pools on the central Brazilian plateau within the upper Rio Araguaia basin. The type locality, documented by Frans Vermeulen during a collection trip on 6 April 2002, lies approximately 19 mi south of Alto Araguaia, Mato Grosso (field code MT 100). These are shallow, warm-water pools embedded in Cerrado (savanna) vegetation that fill with the wet-season rains and dry completely after seven to eight months, leaving bare, cracked earth through the dry season.
The water in these pools is characteristically soft and low in dissolved salts; the species is notably sensitive to calcium-rich water, and hobbyists who have kept it emphasise the importance of using rainwater or similarly soft, mineral-poor water. Temperature in the natural environment follows the tropical seasonal cycle of the central plateau, warm through the wet season and cooler as the dry season approaches — though by the time true cold arrives, the pools have long since evaporated and only buried eggs remain. The surrounding Cerrado landscape defines the biogeographic context: a mosaic of grassland, scrub, and gallery forest intersected by rivers draining northward into the Araguaia–Tocantins system.
Feeding
In the wild, Simpsonichthys cholopteryx is an opportunistic predator of small invertebrates — microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and zooplankton that colonise temporary pools rapidly after rainfall. The large eyes and upturned mouth are consistent with a mid-water to surface feeding posture, hunting mobile prey visually in the relatively clear, shallow water of freshly filled seasonal pools.
In captivity the species accepts live and frozen invertebrate prey readily. Brine shrimp nauplii (Artemia) are taken immediately by hatchlings and remain a staple throughout life; adults also consume Daphnia and other small crustaceans. Given the short natural lifespan, offering high-quality live food is advisable to keep breeding condition; the species does not need large quantities but benefits from variety and nutritional richness during the accelerated growth and reproductive phases of its annual cycle.
Mating
Simpsonichthys cholopteryx is a substrate-spawner in the classic annual killifish mode. Courtship is initiated by the male, whose bright coloration serves as both species-recognition signal and quality indicator to the female. Males display lateral and frontal postures, spreading their fins to show pattern and extent. When a female is receptive, the pair move side-by-side in a nuptial embrace.
Mating occurs within or immediately above the soft substrate — peat, mud, or detritus at the pool bottom. The pair press together and drive downward, burying the eggs into the sediment with each embrace rather than scattering or depositing them on vegetation or hard surfaces. Multiple spawnings occur across the wet season as long as both partners are in condition. Because each embrace deposits only one or a few eggs at considerable depth, spawning is a slow, cumulative process rather than a single mass-release event, and the eggs are distributed at varying depths through the substrate profile.
Breeding
The eggs of Simpsonichthys cholopteryx are large relative to adult body size and are drought-resistant through a developmental arrest known as diapause. After the pool dries, the eggs remain viable in the dry sediment for the duration of the dry season — in nature, seven to eight months — until seasonal rains refill the pool and trigger hatching. In the aquarium, spawning is carried out on a peat or coir fibre medium: breeders are allowed to dive-spawn into this substrate over several weeks, after which the medium is removed, lightly pressed to remove excess water, sealed in a plastic bag, and stored at room temperature (approximately 77–82 °F) for two and a half to three months, though some eggs are ready as early as five to six weeks.
At the end of the storage period the medium is re-wetted with soft, cool water (around 64–68 °F), triggering hatching. The fry are large at emergence and begin feeding on Artemia nauplii almost immediately. Growth is rapid: young fish begin producing eggs of their own at approximately six weeks of age. In captivity the species can live up to about 1.5 years, considerably longer than the wild lifespan of roughly seven to eight months imposed by pool desiccation. Successful breeding depends critically on soft, calcium-poor water throughout; hard tap water inhibits egg development and adult health alike.
In the aquarium
Simpsonichthys cholopteryx is a specialist fish suited to experienced killifish keepers rather than the general community aquarium. A small, species-only tank — a 5.5–10 US gal aquarium is ample for a trio or small group — with a dark, soft substrate of peat or fine sand and floating plants or surface cover to reduce stress is ideal. Lighting should be subdued; these fish come from pools shaded by Cerrado vegetation and are easily stressed by bright light and open water.
Water quality requirements are the dominant practical concern: soft, acidic water free of calcium and magnesium is essential. Rainwater or reverse-osmosis water buffered lightly with peat is the standard approach. Temperature can range from approximately 68–79 °F; cooler temperatures slow metabolism and may extend lifespan. Because the species is small, delicate, and sensitive to water chemistry, it is not recommended for beginners, but it rewards the keeper who meets its needs with vivid colour displays and the compelling spectacle of the annual cycle managed under glass.
The fish are available through specialist killifish societies and exchanges rather than mainstream retail channels; many hobbyists acquire eggs on damp peat through the mail, hatching them at home. This pattern of distribution through the killifish community — the American Killifish Association (AKA) and equivalent European bodies — is the primary route for keepers to obtain the species, and the associated record-keeping maintains strain provenance data that is valuable for conservation purposes.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Simpsonichthys cholopteryx as Endangered (EN) in 2018 under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), indicating a severely restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, with continuing decline in habitat quality. The species is known from the upper Rio Araguaia basin in Mato Grosso — a narrow range tied to a single river system and its associated seasonal pool network on the central Brazilian plateau.
The primary threats are those facing seasonal pool habitats across the Brazilian Cerrado: agricultural expansion (particularly soy cultivation and cattle ranching), the draining and filling of temporary pools for pasture and crop land, and alteration of the hydrology of the central plateau through watershed modification. The Cerrado biome has been converted at an accelerating pace over the past several decades and retains only a fraction of its original extent in protected areas. Seasonal pools — shallow, inconspicuous, and not perceived as ecologically significant — receive little targeted protection and are often drained as nuisances rather than recognised as the sole habitat of endemic annual fishes. The combination of extreme range restriction, habitat specificity, and ongoing Cerrado conversion places S. cholopteryx in a genuinely precarious position, and hobbyist maintenance of captive populations through killifish society networks represents a meaningful supplementary safety net for the species.
