Taxonomy & naming
Simpsonichthys fasciatus was described by Wilson J.E.M. Costa and Gleisy S. Brasil in 2006, in a paper published in Zootaxa (volume 1244, pages 41–55, DOI 10.11646/zootaxa.1244.1.3) covering three new species of seasonal killifishes from the Rio Paracatu drainage of the Rio São Francisco basin. The species is placed within the subgenus Hypsolebias, a group characterised by the compressed, laterally deep body plan that typifies many annual killifishes in the São Francisco system. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Simpsonichthys fasciatus (Costa & Brasil, 2006).
The original diagnosis separates S. fasciatus from its two congeners described in the same paper — S. alternatus and S. delucai — primarily by fin characters: males have a rounded anal fin (versus pointed in S. alternatus) and the dorsal-fin origin is positioned further anteriorly than in both relatives. The species epithet fasciatus is Latin for 'banded' or 'striped', a direct reference to the dark gray to black stripe that runs along the distal margin of the dorsal fin in adult males — the most immediately visible character in the field and under aquarium lighting. The genus Simpsonichthys was erected in honour of the British ichthyologist R.B. Simpson, who contributed substantially to the study of South American killifishes.
Morphology
Simpsonichthys fasciatus is a laterally compressed annual killifish of modest size, consistent with the body plan of the subgenus Hypsolebias. The diagnostic fin characters defined by Costa & Brasil (2006) form the most reliable means of identification: in males the anal fin is rounded in outline, whereas in females it takes on a distinctive spatula shape — a character combination unusual within the genus. The dorsal-fin origin is notably anterior, positioned well forward relative to the anal-fin base, a feature that distinguishes the species from both S. alternatus and S. delucai. Males bear a conspicuous dark gray to black stripe along the distal margin of the dorsal fin.
Sexual dichromatism is pronounced, as in virtually all Simpsonichthys species. Males display the brighter, patterned coloration — body flanks typically showing iridescent markings against a darker background, consistent with the elaborate courtship displays that characterise the genus. Females are cryptically coloured, generally brownish with less defined patterning. Size data for this species specifically were not recorded in available sources; as a small hypsolebiatine, total length is expected to fall within the range typical for the subgenus.
Habitat
Simpsonichthys fasciatus is restricted to the middle Rio Paracatu drainage, which forms part of the middle Rio São Francisco basin in central Brazil. The type locality lies in this drainage. Like all members of the genus, it inhabits temporary seasonal pools — shallow, isolated bodies of water that form during the wet season and evaporate completely during the annual dry period. These pools are characteristic of the cerrado (Brazilian savanna) landscape, occurring in grassland depressions, forest edges, and restinga margins.
The water in seasonal cerrado pools is typically warm, soft, and acidic, often darkened by organic matter — tannins from leaf litter and humic acids from decomposing vegetation. Studies of annual killifish habitats in Brazil (MDPI Diversity, 2025) describe the pools as showing dark, reddish, acidic water chemistry consistent with low dissolved oxygen levels in shallow, sun-warmed basins. As an inhabitant of such pools, S. fasciatus is adapted to a narrow seasonal window of aquatic life followed by months of terrestrial dormancy as buried eggs, making it one of the most habitat-specific vertebrates in the São Francisco watershed.
Feeding
Specific diet data for Simpsonichthys fasciatus are not documented in available sources. Annual killifishes of the genus Simpsonichthys are understood to be opportunistic micropredators, feeding on small invertebrates including aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and other zooplankton that colonise the seasonal pools alongside them. The abundance of invertebrate prey in newly flooded cerrado pools during the wet season provides the food base that enables fast growth and rapid sexual maturation — traits essential in a species whose entire above-ground life may last only a few months.
In aquarium conditions, South American annual killifishes of this group readily accept small live and frozen foods: brine shrimp nauplii and adults, Daphnia, mosquito larvae (bloodworm and white mosquito larvae), and Tubifex. A varied diet of appropriately sized live and frozen invertebrates supports the intense breeding activity these fish are capable of during their brief lives.
Mating
Simpsonichthys fasciatus is an annual killifish, and its mating system is accordingly built around rapid pair formation and intensive spawning activity compressed into a single wet season. Males are vigorously territorial and competitive; in the seasonal pools that constitute their natural habitat, dominant males establish small territories within the substrate zone and display to females with spread fins and intensified body coloration, while subordinate males may pursue opportunistic spawnings at the margins of territories.
Courtship is direct and active: the male orients laterally or alongside the female, displays the dorsal-fin stripe and body markings, and drives her toward the soft substrate. Actual mating involves a spawning embrace in which both fish press side by side and drive briefly into the mud or peat of the pool bottom, releasing a small number of fertilised eggs with each plunge. This substrate-diving spawning act is the defining behavioural character of annual killifishes: eggs are deposited individually or in small batches directly into the soft sediment where they will remain through the dry season.
Breeding
The breeding biology of S. fasciatus follows the annual killifish pattern precisely. Fertilised eggs are buried in the soft substrate — mud, peat, and decomposing organic matter at the bottom of the seasonal pool — where they enter a state of arrested development known as diapause. Diapause allows the embryos to survive the complete evaporation of the pool and the months of terrestrial conditions that follow. The eggs are remarkably tolerant of desiccation; in nature they may remain buried in cracked clay or damp peat through a dry season lasting four to six months before the return of rains triggers hatching. The embryos typically pass through two or three discrete diapause stages (diapause I, II, and III in the developmental sequence documented for neotropical annuals), with diapause II being the most robust resting stage.
In the aquarium, hobbyists replicate this cycle using peat or coconut coir as a spawning medium. The peat is removed from the tank after a few weeks, lightly squeezed to remove excess water, sealed in a plastic bag or container, and stored at room temperature for a period of four to six months (or longer, depending on the species). Re-wetting the peat triggers hatching, which can occur within hours to days. The newly hatched fry are active feeders from the start and should be offered the finest available live foods — infusoria, vinegar eels, and freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii — graduating to larger prey as they grow. Growth is rapid and fish reach maturity within weeks.
In the aquarium
Simpsonichthys fasciatus is a specialist fish for experienced killifish keepers. It is not regularly encountered in the mainstream ornamental trade; hobbyists typically obtain eggs or fish through killifish associations and specialist breeders who maintain annual species on a seasonal spawning-and-storage cycle. A small aquarium of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a breeding pair or trio; the tank should be dimly lit, densely planted or furnished with floating vegetation, and fitted with a gentle, air-driven filter to avoid strong currents that disturb the soft spawning substrate on the floor.
Water chemistry should reflect the soft, warm, acidic conditions of the species' cerrado-pool origin: a temperature of 72–79 °F, pH in the range of 5.5–6.5, and very low hardness are appropriate. A peat substrate or peat filtration will replicate the natural tannin-rich environment and is also essential for spawning. The male can be aggressive toward the female; providing visual cover and checking regularly that the female is feeding and undamaged is important in small setups. The species' life expectancy in captivity is typically under two years — the short lifespan of annual killifishes means that maintaining a breeding colony and storing peat packages is the only way to sustain the species long-term outside its native range.
The hobby importance of annual killifishes from the São Francisco system goes beyond their ornamental value: many species exist as captive populations in killifish circles that pre-date or outlast surveys of the wild populations, making the hobby a genuine ex-situ conservation resource for taxa threatened in their native range.
Conservation
Simpsonichthys fasciatus is assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, reflecting the precarious status of seasonal-pool habitats in the Rio Paracatu drainage and more broadly across the Rio São Francisco system. The Rio Paracatu sub-basin, situated in the cerrado transition zone of central Brazil, has experienced severe deforestation and agricultural expansion over recent decades; soy cultivation, cattle ranching, and irrigated agriculture have transformed much of the landscape and substantially altered the hydrology of the small streams and ephemeral wetlands that feed the seasonal pools these killifishes depend on.
Simpsonichthys fasciatus is a single-drainage endemic — its entire wild range falls within the Rio Paracatu drainage, making it acutely sensitive to any deterioration of conditions in that system. Drainage of seasonal pools for agriculture, conversion of pool margins to pasture or cropland, increased sedimentation, and changes in rainfall timing driven by regional deforestation all directly reduce the availability and quality of breeding habitat. The fish's annual life cycle offers no buffering: if pools fail to form in a given wet season, or if they fill with degraded, turbid water unsuitable for spawning, recruitment fails entirely. Captive populations maintained by killifish hobbyists provide a safety net for this and related species, but the long-term security of S. fasciatus depends on the protection of intact seasonal wetland complexes in the middle São Francisco watershed.
