Taxonomy & naming
Simpsonichthys adornatus was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 2000, with the type locality recorded as Sítio de Mato, in the rio São Francisco basin, Bahia state, Brazil, at an altitude of approximately 1519 ft. The genus Simpsonichthys was established to accommodate a group of South American annual killifish within the subfamily Cynolebiinae (family Rivulidae). FishBase continues to list the species under Simpsonichthys adornatus, making this the widely used aquarium trade name.
Costa's subsequent revision of cynolebiin systematics (2006) elevated the subgenus Hypsolebias to full generic rank, transferring adornatus and its close relatives into Hypsolebias. Under that reclassification — which several ichthyological sources and the IUCN assessment follow — the current accepted name is Hypsolebias adornatus (Costa, 2000), with the authority in parentheses reflecting the combination change. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for valid nomenclature; hobbyists and trade sources may use either name depending on the source they follow.
The species is placed in the subfamily Cynolebiinae alongside the iconic South American annual genera Cynolebias, Austrolebias, and Notholebias. Its closest relatives within Hypsolebias share the caatinga and cerrado seasonal-pool habitats of eastern and central Brazil.
Morphology
Males of Simpsonichthys adornatus reach approximately 2 in standard length (SL); females are slightly smaller at around 1.5 in SL (FishBase). Maximum total length has been reported at up to 2.5 in in aquarium specimens (It Rains Fishes). The species is sexually dimorphic to a striking degree, as is typical among South American annual killifish.
Males are the ornamental sex. The body is deep and somewhat laterally compressed, and they carry an unusually long-based dorsal fin that begins well forward on the back — a feature directly referenced in the species name (see Etymology). The body is marked with vivid iridescent blues, greens, and reds arranged in a reticulated or banded pattern, with the intensity of colouration increasing in breeding condition. The finnage is also brightly patterned, with contrasting marginal bands on the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins.
Females are cryptically coloured — pale brownish with subtle darker markings and plain, rounded fins. This extreme sexual dichromatism is the norm in cynolebiin annuals, where intense male ornamentation is driven by strong sexual selection in the compressed breeding window that the temporary-pool lifestyle imposes.
Habitat
Simpsonichthys adornatus is endemic to the São Francisco River basin in Bahia state, northeastern Brazil, at elevations around 1519 ft. Its habitat is the caatinga biome — the seasonally dry scrub and thorn-forest landscape of Brazil's Northeast interior — where it inhabits small, shallow, temporary or intermittent pools and seasonal marshes that are rain-fed, less than 8 ha in surface area, and dry out completely in the dry season.
The IUCN assessment notes abundant aquatic vegetation in these pools, including water lilies (Nymphaea sp.), which provide cover and foraging habitat during the brief wet-season window when the fish are alive. The species has been recorded in sympatry with Cynolebias gibbus, another cynolebiin annual, in at least one of its two known localities.
Water conditions in caatinga seasonal pools tend toward warm temperatures and variable chemistry. The IUCN Red List assessment recorded the species from only two pools in Bahia; one of those sites has since been destroyed, leaving the species' known range reduced to a single locality.
Feeding
In the wild, Simpsonichthys adornatus feeds on small aquatic invertebrates. The IUCN assessment records the diet as aquatic arthropods (insects and crustaceans), tecamebas (testate amoebae), and rotifers — a broadly invertebrate menu consistent with the food base available in shallow, vegetation-rich seasonal pools of the caatinga.
FishBase assigns the species a trophic level of 3.2, placing it as a low-level carnivore, consistent with the invertebrate-focused wild diet. In the aquarium, like most annual killies, the fish readily accepts small live and frozen invertebrates: Artemia nauplii, microworms, daphnia, bloodworm, and similar fare are all taken. Offering a varied diet of appropriately sized live or frozen foods maintains colour intensity and breeding condition, particularly in males.
Mating
Simpsonichthys adornatus is an annual killifish in the cynolebiin mould: the mating system is structured around the compressed, opportunistic spawning window available during the wet season, when the temporary pools are filled and the fish are alive. Males are territorial and display intensely to females, erecting their fins and flaring vivid colouration to assert dominance over rivals and court receptive females.
Spawning is triggered when a courting pair orient alongside each other and, in a close, tight embrace, dive together into the soft substrate — peat, mud, or detritus on the pool floor. The embrace occurs within the substrate: both fish bury themselves briefly, the female deposits one or a small number of eggs, the male simultaneously fertilises them, and the pair return to the water column. This plunge-spawning behaviour is repeated multiple times during a spawning session. The eggs are left buried in the substrate; neither parent provides any care, and in the wild the adults die when the pool dries.
Breeding
The buried eggs of Simpsonichthys adornatus are drought-resistant and enter diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development — as the pool dries and the substrate desiccates around them. This diapause enables the eggs to survive the entire dry season, which may last months, and to hatch when rain refills the pool the following wet season. It Rains Fishes records that at optimal temperatures (77–84 °F), the diapause period lasts approximately 8–10 weeks before development resumes and the fry hatch within 2–6 hours of re-wetting. Sexual maturity is reached rapidly — within 5–6 weeks post-hatch — reflecting the extreme selection pressure to reproduce before the pool dries again. Wild lifespan is typically 6–8 months; captive fish may reach 10–12 months.
In the aquarium, the standard approach for annual killifish applies. Fish are spawned over a layer of peat moss or coconut-fibre substrate in a shallow container. After several weeks of spawning activity, the substrate is removed, gently squeezed to remove excess moisture, then stored in a sealed plastic bag at a stable temperature for the diapause period (roughly 8–10 weeks for this species). The peat is then re-wetted — typically with aged, soft, slightly acidic water — and fry hatch within hours. First foods are baby brine shrimp nauplii, micro-worms, or commercial fry foods small enough for the newly hatched fish, which are themselves larger at hatching than many egg-layer fry thanks to the extended diapause development period. Growth thereafter is very fast.
Facts.breeding.mode: Annual / soil-spawner (diapausing eggs). The species is reportedly challenging to breed in captivity despite its appeal; the IUCN assessment cites difficulty of captive breeding as a factor that increases the impact of wild collection.
In the aquarium
Simpsonichthys adornatus is a specialist fish that rewards experienced killifish keepers. It is not a community tank species: like all annual killies it is short-lived, requires precise management of the diapause cycle, and males can be aggressive toward one another and sometimes toward females outside of active courtship. A small, dedicated breeding setup — a bare or peat-bottomed tank of 10–15 US gal with a tight-fitting lid and gentle filtration — is the standard approach.
Water should be soft and slightly acidic, warm (approximately 72–79 °F), and clean. The fish are sensitive to deteriorating water quality given their short natural lifespan in restricted, seasonal habitats. Good lighting enhances the male's remarkable iridescent colouration, making this one of the more visually rewarding annual killifish available to hobbyists willing to manage the diapause cycle.
The species is available through specialist killifish societies and their member networks (such as the British Killifish Association and regional American Killifish Association chapters) rather than in general aquarium retail. Given its IUCN Vulnerable status and the noted difficulty of captive breeding, sourcing fish from established hobbyist lines rather than wild-caught imports is strongly preferable.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Simpsonichthys adornatus (as Hypsolebias adornatus) as Vulnerable under criterion D2 in an evaluation published on 7 November 2018 (assessment ID 1819454). The D2 criterion applies when a species occupies a restricted area of occupancy and faces a plausible threat that could drive it to Critically Endangered or Extinct within a very short time. In this case, the species is known from only two small temporary pools in Bahia state; one of those pools has already been destroyed, leaving the species effectively dependent on a single remaining locality.
The primary threat identified by the IUCN assessment is collection from the wild for the ornamental aquarium trade. The species is regarded as attractive and unusual, but is considered difficult to breed reliably in captivity, meaning wild populations face sustained collection pressure to supply the hobby. The species does not occur within any protected area, and its population trend is unknown. The assessment recommends regulation of ornamental capture and support for both in situ protection of the remaining pool and ex situ maintenance of captive populations.
The caatinga biome more broadly faces ongoing land conversion, water extraction, and degradation from agriculture and livestock grazing — pressures that threaten the ephemeral pool habitats on which cynolebiin annual killifish depend across northeastern Brazil. The loss of even one pool can constitute local extinction for a species with as restricted a range as Simpsonichthys adornatus.
