Taxonomy & naming
Apteronotus cuchillejo was described by Leonard P. Schultz in 1949, originally under the genus Sternarchus, as Sternarchus cuchillejo. It was later reassigned to Apteronotus, the genus of ghost knifefishes within the family Apteronotidae, order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. A 2019 molecular phylogenetic study of the genus recovered A. cuchillejo as the most basal taxon within the subfamily Apteronotinae's Apteronotus lineage, meaning it branches off earliest among the genus's internal relationships.
The genus name Apteronotus comes from the Greek "apteros" (without wings, i.e. without fins) and "noton" (back), referring to the absence of a dorsal fin shared across the genus. As with all Apteronotidae, the defining trait of the group is an electric organ built from modified nerve cells rather than muscle, giving the family the fastest, highest-frequency wave-type electric organ discharges of any knifefish family — used for electrolocation in the dark and for communication with other knifefish. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid name.
Morphology
Apteronotus cuchillejo reaches a maximum recorded length of about 7.5 in total length, smaller than well-known relatives such as the black ghost knifefish. Like other members of the genus it has the classic ghost-knifefish body plan: laterally compressed and blade-shaped, tapering toward the tail, with no dorsal fin and no distinct caudal fin — locomotion instead comes from a long anal fin run as a travelling wave along the underside of the body, letting the fish move forward or backward with equal control.
The species is scaleless, as is typical for the family, with an electric organ running along the body and electroreceptor pores distributed over the skin that pick up distortions in its self-generated field. Detailed published descriptions of coloration and any sexual dimorphism are sparse; data on external sex differences for this species specifically are not well documented in the available literature.
Habitat
Apteronotus cuchillejo is endemic to the Maracaibo basin of Venezuela, recorded from small streams within the Catatumbo River drainage. It is a benthopelagic fish, occupying the water column near the bottom of these streams rather than the open water or the surface.
The Maracaibo basin is recognized as an exceptional freshwater endemism hotspot: roughly 55% of its Gymnotiformes species and 40% of its Characiformes species are found nowhere else, a pattern attributed to the basin's isolation by the Mérida mountain range and a history of vicariant speciation.
