Taxonomy & naming
Apteronotus apurensis was described by Fernández-Yépez in 1968 and placed in the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Like every member of the order it is a bony fish but an unusual one, defined by an electric organ and a ribbon-like anal fin rather than by conventional fins; the Apteronotidae are further set apart by an electric organ built from modified nerve cells rather than muscle, giving them a fast, continuous wave-type discharge used to sense the world and to signal to other fish. The genus name Apteronotus comes from Greek apteros, "without a wing/fin", and notos, "back" — "without a dorsal fin", the feature that unites the ghost knifefishes. The species epithet apurensis refers to the Río Apure, the Venezuelan tributary of the Orinoco where the type specimens were collected, at Río Bucaral, Paso Mirabal.
The Catalog of Fishes and FishBase currently treat A. apurensis as a valid, distinct species, and that is the name used here. It is worth noting, in the interest of transparency, that a later morphological study of cranial osteology found no reliable skeletal differences between Apure-basin specimens (A. apurensis) and Amazon/Orinoco specimens of A. bonapartii Castelnau, 1855, and suggested the two may be synonymous; that question has not been settled in the accepted taxonomic authorities, so the species is treated here as it stands in Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
As in other Apteronotus, the body is deep and strongly flattened from side to side, tapering to a slender tail, with no dorsal fin and no proper tail fin; movement is carried almost entirely by a long anal fin running along most of the underside, thrown into travelling waves that let the fish glide forward or backward with equal control. The skin is scaleless, a trait shared across the family and one that matters for how the fish must be kept. FishBase records a maximum size of 12 in total length for the species, distinctly smaller than the black ghost's roughly 19.5 in.
A fine electric organ runs down the body beneath the skin, paired with rows of tuberous electroreceptors — on the order of thousands of them across the body in Apteronotidae generally — that pick up distortions in the fish's own electric field caused by nearby objects, prey or other fish. Sexual dimorphism has been noted in the lower jaw in related Apteronotus, but no dimorphism data specific to A. apurensis is documented in the sources available; the point is treated here as unconfirmed rather than assumed.
Habitat
Apteronotus apurensis is known from the Apure river system, a major tributary of the Orinoco in Venezuela, and more broadly from surveys of the Orinoco basin and its principal tributaries along the Colombia–Venezuela border. It appears to be a fish of the main channel and larger tributaries rather than still backwaters, recorded in benthic and near-bottom habitat.
No site-specific water chemistry has been published for this species alone, but the Apteronotidae as a family are creatures of warm (roughly 75–82 °F), soft, weakly acidic to neutral water (around pH 6.0–7.5) with low mineral content, typically turbid or tannin-stained — conditions in which eyesight is of limited use and an electric sense does the work instead. The species is strictly freshwater and, like its relatives, presumed nocturnal and cryptic by day, though this has not been directly observed and reported for A. apurensis specifically.
Feeding
No diet study specific to A. apurensis appears in the available sources. Going by the pattern seen across Apteronotidae and by the species' electrolocating anatomy, it almost certainly hunts small benthic invertebrates after dark — aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — detected by the electric field it projects around itself rather than by sight, in exactly the manner documented for the black ghost and brown ghost.
Because the species is not established in the aquarium trade, there is no hobbyist feeding record to draw on, and none is offered here; the safest statement is that its ecology should mirror its genus until direct observation says otherwise.
Mating
As in other Apteronotidae, the wave-type electric organ discharge is understood to double as a social signal — carrying information about a fish's species, sex and readiness to breed — and courtship in the genus, best studied in the brown ghost, involves males and females shifting their discharge frequencies toward one another in a kind of electrical exchange. There is no reason to think A. apurensis differs from this general pattern, but no courtship behaviour has been directly recorded for the species itself, so this remains an inference from its relatives rather than a documented observation.
Breeding
Breeding biology for Apteronotus apurensis is essentially undocumented. Apteronotidae in general are egg-layers, scattering eggs among roots, plants or other cover with no meaningful parental care afterward, and the group is only rarely bred even in captivity — the aquarium trade relies mostly on wild-caught fish or, for the popular species, farmed stock produced with hormone induction. A. apurensis is not established in the trade at all, so there is no captive-breeding record to report; the honest position is that its breeding habits are poorly documented and likely follow the family pattern of egg-scattering with no parental care, rather than anything specifically observed in this species.
In the aquarium
Apteronotus apurensis is not a species found in the ornamental trade in any meaningful numbers, and there is no body of hobbyist experience to draw on for care specifics. What can be said comes from its family and its biology: as a scaleless fish it would need the same caution around water quality and medications as its relatives — no copper-based treatments, reduced doses generally, and clean, mature water low in ammonia and nitrate — and as a nocturnal electrolocating predator it would need dim lighting, secure cover such as pipes or root tangles to retreat into by day, and tankmates too large to be treated as prey after dark.
Given how little is known of its size in captivity, its temperament, or its long-term husbandry, this is not a species to recommend for the average aquarium; anyone encountering it would be working from general Apteronotidae care principles rather than established practice for the species itself.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Apteronotus apurensis as Data Deficient, reflecting the lack of population, distribution and threat data rather than any evidence that the species is currently declining. It is known only from the Apure basin, a tributary system of the Orinoco in Venezuela, and if its range genuinely is restricted to that one river system, a narrow-range endemic of this kind would typically be more vulnerable to habitat degradation, damming or pollution than a widespread species — though no such threat has been documented or quantified for A. apurensis specifically.
The taxonomic question of whether this is a distinct species from the more widespread A. bonapartii adds a further layer of uncertainty to any conservation assessment: a real, narrow-range endemic and a synonym of a wide-ranging species would carry very different conservation implications, and that ambiguity is itself part of why the species remains Data Deficient rather than assessed against a firmer category.
