Taxonomy & naming
Apteronotus anu was formally described by Sturla Santana and Vari in 2013, part of a wider revision of the genus that separated several previously conflated species. Before that work, specimens from the Lago Maracaibo basin had routinely been identified as Apteronotus leptorhynchus, the widespread brown ghost of the Amazon and Orinoco — the two species are similar enough in general appearance that they were only teased apart by closer anatomical study. It belongs to the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes, the New World electric knifefishes, a bony-fish lineage defined by an electric organ and a single long anal fin used for propulsion in place of a tail.
The Apteronotidae are distinguished within the order by an electric organ built from modified nerve tissue rather than muscle, which produces a faster, steadier wave-type discharge than the pulse-type signals of other gymnotiform families such as Gymnotus. The genus Apteronotus itself holds a mix of well-known aquarium species — the black ghost and brown ghost among them — and a larger number of poorly documented species like A. anu, known mainly from museum material and regional surveys. As with all valid names on this site, the Catalog of Fishes is treated as the authority for the current name.
Morphology
Apteronotus anu reaches a documented maximum of about 10.5 in in total length, sharing the family's characteristic silhouette: a laterally compressed, blade-like body tapering to a slender tail, with no dorsal fin and no true tail fin. Forward and backward movement comes from a very long anal fin that runs beneath most of the body and is driven in travelling waves, letting the fish reverse direction without turning. Like its relatives it is scaleless, its skin bare over the electric organ that runs the length of the body and the sensory pores that read the field it creates.
As is typical for a ghost knifefish only recently split out from A. leptorhynchus, fine external distinctions from its closest relatives rest on details of proportions and pigmentation documented in the original description rather than on any single obvious field mark; separating it from other Apteronotus in the same drainage is a job for careful examination, not casual observation. Data on external sexing are sparse — as in other Apteronotidae, males and females are not reliably told apart by eye.
Habitat
The species is known from the Lago Maracaibo drainage of Colombia and Venezuela, a basin separate from the Amazon–Orinoco system and drained instead into the Caribbean via Lake Maracaibo itself. Within that drainage it has been recorded in areas of swift current over rocky substrates, a somewhat higher-energy setting than the sluggish, leaf-littered channels favoured by some other ghost knifefishes.
As in the rest of the genus, darkness rather than daylight is what shapes its behaviour: Apteronotus species are nocturnal, and their electric sense is most useful precisely where vision is not — in turbid or dimly lit water among rocks and current, where sight would be of limited use for finding prey or avoiding obstacles. Data on the wider ecology of the Maracaibo drainage populations, beyond this basic habitat description, is sparse.
Feeding
Apteronotus anu is described as a nocturnal, voracious predator, consistent with the feeding ecology of the genus as a whole. Ghost knifefishes hunt after dark, using their electric sense to locate small prey animals hidden in the substrate or among rocks and roots that would be difficult to find by sight alone, then taking them by a quick approach and gulp rather than by any elaborate ambush.
Specifics of its diet in the wild are not documented in the sources available for this species; the broader genus feeds on aquatic insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and, for larger individuals, small fish, and A. anu — a mid-sized member of the genus by ghost-knifefish standards — most likely follows the same general pattern, though this has not been directly confirmed for it specifically.
Mating
As in other Apteronotidae, reproduction in this genus is thought to involve an electrical component to courtship: the wave-type discharge each fish produces carries information about identity and sex, and in related, better-studied species such as the brown ghost, males and females are known to shift their discharge frequencies toward one another during courtship, a kind of electric duet conducted in total darkness. Whether this has been specifically documented in Apteronotus anu is not established in the available literature — it is inferred from what is known of the genus rather than observed directly in this species.
Beyond that inference, essentially nothing has been published on courtship behaviour, spawning site selection or timing for this species. It should be treated as data sparse rather than assumed to mirror its relatives in every detail.
Breeding
There is no documented aquarium or field breeding record for Apteronotus anu. Ghost knifefishes as a group are egg-layers that are only rarely bred in captivity — most aquarium specimens across the genus are wild-caught or produced on commercial farms using hormone induction rather than raised from home spawnings — and nothing in the available sources suggests A. anu is an exception. Where breeding has been observed in related species, eggs are scattered among cover such as roots, plants or crevices, with no meaningful parental care afterwards.
Given how recently this species was separated from A. leptorhynchus and how little has been published on it since, its breeding biology should be considered essentially unknown. The honest statement is that it is unbred and undocumented in the hobby, not that it follows some specific protocol.
In the aquarium
Apteronotus anu is not an established aquarium fish, and there is no meaningful hobbyist literature on keeping it specifically — what follows is drawn from the general husbandry needs of the genus, which likely apply here too. As a scaleless fish it will be sensitive to ammonia, nitrite and accumulated nitrate, and to copper-based or harsh medications, all of which call for mature filtration, clean water and reduced medication doses if treatment is ever needed.
As a nocturnal predator that reads its surroundings electrically, it would need dim lighting, secure cover such as pipes or root tangles to retreat into by day, and tankmates too large to be mistaken for prey after dark — small fish and shrimp are not safe housemates for any ghost knifefish. Given its origin in swift, rocky water, some current in the aquarium would likely suit it. Because it is essentially unknown in the trade, anyone encountering it should treat it as a specialist proposition, not a fish with a settled care routine to follow.
Conservation
Apteronotus anu has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so no formal conservation status exists for it. It is a genus-level pattern that narrow-range knifefishes tied to a single drainage — as this species appears to be, restricted to the Lago Maracaibo basin — carry more exposure to local pressures than wide-ranging relatives spread across the Amazon or Orinoco, simply because there is nowhere else for the population to persist if its one basin degrades.
Lago Maracaibo and its tributaries have faced substantial pollution, habitat modification and industrial development pressure over recent decades, though no source-backed assessment ties specific threats to A. anu itself. In the absence of an IUCN evaluation or targeted population studies, its conservation status is best described as unknown rather than assumed safe or assumed threatened.
