Taxonomy & naming
Apteronotus ferrarisi was described by de Santana & Vari in 2013 and placed in the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. These are bony fish, but unusual ones: Gymnotiformes are defined by an electric organ and a single long ribbon-like anal fin rather than a conventional dorsal-and-tail arrangement, and they are only distantly related to the rest of the freshwater aquarium fauna. Apteronotidae is set apart within that order by an electric organ derived from modified nerve cells rather than muscle, giving the family the fastest, highest-frequency discharges of any knifefish group.
The species name honors Carl J. Ferraris Jr. (b. 1950), an American ichthyologist affiliated with the California Academy of Sciences. Despite the shared common name "knifefish", Apteronotus and its relatives are not related to the Asian featherback or clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to an entirely different order of bonytongues; the resemblance is convergent body shape, not kinship. Apteronotus ferrarisi is recognized as a valid species in the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, with its type locality at Quebrada Guaquira, on the Hacienda Guaquira southeast of the El Peñón Reservoir, Yaracuy State, Venezuela.
Morphology
Like other Apteronotidae, A. ferrarisi has the family's characteristic blade-like, laterally compressed body, no dorsal fin, and no distinct tail fin in the ordinary sense. In place of a dorsal fin runs a longitudinal strip of fleshy tissue along the back known as the dorsal organ, a feature the family uses in place of a true fin. Locomotion comes from a single very long anal fin running along most of the underside, which the fish undulates to move forward or backward with equal facility.
Running beneath the skin is the electric organ, and distributed over the body are the electroreceptor pores that read the field it produces; the species, like its relatives, is scaleless. Detailed morphometric description is confined to the taxonomic literature (de Santana & Vari, 2013) distinguishing it from other members of the Apteronotus leptorhynchus species group; a maximum size and precise external field markings are not established in accessible hobby or general reference sources, so figures here are necessarily limited to what the primary description records.
Habitat
Apteronotus ferrarisi is known only from the Quebrada Guaquira, a stream in the Río Yaracuy basin of Yaracuy State, in northern Venezuela — a single, narrow-range river system rather than the broad, multi-basin distribution typical of some Apteronotus species. As with other ghost knifefishes, it is presumed to be a fish of flowing water, favoring channels and margins with cover such as submerged roots and leaf litter over open, exposed habitat.
The genus as a whole occupies warm, soft, often tannin-stained Neotropical river water, typically dim or turbid, conditions under which an electric sense is far more useful than vision. Specific water chemistry, depth and seasonal data for the Guaquira population have not been located in accessible sources; this account should be read as inferring typical Apteronotus habitat preferences rather than reporting site-specific measurements for A. ferrarisi.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary study for Apteronotus ferrarisi appears in accessible sources. By family pattern, ghost knifefishes are nocturnal carnivores that hunt small benthic and water-column prey — aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — locating them largely through electrolocation rather than sight, an approach well suited to the dim, structurally complex stream habitat implied by its single known locality.
Given the lack of direct observation, natural diet composition for this species should be treated as data sparse and inferred from its close relatives rather than confirmed.
Mating
Courtship and reproductive behavior have not been documented for Apteronotus ferrarisi specifically. In the best-studied member of the genus, the brown ghost (A. leptorhynchus), the wave-type electric organ discharge carries information on identity, sex and readiness to spawn, and males and females shift discharge frequency toward one another during courtship in a kind of electrical duet, while rival fish produce distinctive interruptions on encounter. Because A. ferrarisi shares the same wave-type electrogenic system and close phylogenetic position within the A. leptorhynchus species group, it is reasonable to expect broadly similar electric courtship signalling, but this has not been confirmed by direct study of the species itself.
Breeding
There is no documented breeding record for Apteronotus ferrarisi in the aquarium or in the field. As in other Apteronotidae, it is presumed to be an egg-layer that scatters eggs among cover such as roots and crevices, with no substantial parental care — but this species is essentially absent from the ornamental trade and from the aquarist literature, so no protocol, spawning trigger or fecundity data can be cited. The honest summary is that breeding biology here is poorly documented, consistent with a narrow-range species known mainly from taxonomic collections rather than from husbandry.
In the aquarium
Apteronotus ferrarisi is not an established aquarium fish; it does not appear to be traded, and no husbandry account for the species has been located. Anyone encountering it — most plausibly a specialist or scientific collection rather than a retail purchase — should apply standard Apteronotidae care as a starting point: a dim, quiet aquarium with secure cover such as pipes, caves or root tangles, warm and soft to moderately mineralized water, and no copper-based medications or harsh treatments, since the family is scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to both. Tankmates should be robust enough not to be preyed on after dark and not aggressive toward a slow-moving, nocturnal fish with a long, vulnerable anal fin.
Given how little is known about the species, keeping it — if it is ever encountered — should be treated as an exercise in careful observation and documentation, not routine fishkeeping.
Conservation
Apteronotus ferrarisi has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List; its status is best treated as Not Evaluated. It is known only from the Quebrada Guaquira in the Río Yaracuy basin, Venezuela — a single-river endemic, which is inherently a more vulnerable pattern than the wide, multi-basin ranges typical of some other Apteronotus species, even though no specific threat assessment exists.
Without a published assessment, statements about population trend or specific pressures would be speculation. The generic pressures facing small Neotropical river systems — habitat alteration, water pollution and deforestation in the surrounding catchment — are plausible concerns for a narrow-range endemic of this kind, but nothing beyond that general caution can be attributed to this species with confidence.
