Apteronotus pachamama is a newly described ghost knifefish from the Apteronotidae, the family whose members generate the fastest, most refined electric sense of any knifefish. Like its relatives it is a matte-dark, blade-bodied fish with no dorsal or tail fin, moving forward and backward with equal ease on the ripple of a single long anal fin, and it navigates the dark water it lives in through a weak electric field generated around its own body — sensing prey, obstacles and other knifefish by the way they distort that field, and very likely using the same field to signal to rivals and mates. Described only in 2026, it is too recent to have an IUCN assessment or a settled aquarium reputation, and much about its natural history remains genuinely unknown.

Taxonomy & naming

Apteronotus pachamama was described in 2026 by de Santana, Peixoto, Dutra & Dillman, and placed in the family Apteronotidae — the ghost knifefishes — within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. Gymnotiformes are bony fish, but unusual ones: they are defined by an electric organ and a ribbon-like anal fin rather than a conventional swimming apparatus, and they are only distantly related to the other freshwater aquarium families. The Apteronotidae are set apart within the order by an electric organ built from modified nerve cells rather than muscle, giving them a fast, high-frequency wave-type discharge and the most refined electrolocation of any knifefish group.

Despite sharing the common name "knifefish", Apteronotus and its Apteronotidae relatives are not related to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to an entirely different order of bonytongues; the resemblance is convergent body shape, not kinship. Morphology
