Taxonomy & naming
Archolaemus ferreirai was described in 2012 by Richard Vari, Cristiano Moreira de Santana and Wolmar Wosiacki, in a revision that split the genus Archolaemus — until then thought to contain a single widespread species — into five distinct forms. It belongs to the family Sternopygidae, the glass and rattail knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. Gymnotiformes are bony fish but an unusual lineage: they lack a dorsal fin and a conventional tail fin, propel themselves with a single long anal fin, and generate a weak electric field around the body that they use for electrolocation — sensing prey, obstacles and each other in water where eyesight counts for little — and for communication between individuals. Sternopygidae produce a continuous, wave-type discharge, in contrast to the pulsed signal of families such as Gymnotidae.
The species epithet honors Efrem Ferreira, an ichthyologist at Brazil's Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA). Despite the shared common name "knifefish", Gymnotiformes are not related to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance is convergent, not a sign of kinship. Morphology
As in other Sternopygidae, the body of A. ferreirai is elongate and laterally compressed, tapering to a slender tail with no dorsal or caudal fin; a long anal fin runs beneath most of the body and provides essentially all of the fish's propulsion, allowing it to glide forward or backward with equal ease. The species reaches a recorded maximum of about 13.5 in total length, making it a mid-sized member of the genus rather than one of the family's giants. The skin is scaleless, a trait shared across the order and one with direct consequences for how the fish must be kept and medicated.
Sensory pores distributed over the head and body detect distortions in the fish's self-generated electric field, the mechanism it relies on to navigate and hunt in the fast, often turbid water it inhabits. That preference for swift, well-oxygenated current sets it apart from slower-water Sternopygidae such as the glass knifefish. Anyone encountering it would need to replicate strong, well-oxygenated current rather than the calmer flow suited to most gymnotiform tank setups, along with the low lighting and secure daytime cover that nocturnal, electroreceptive knifefish generally need.
As with all Sternopygidae, the species is scaleless and would be expected to share the family's sensitivity to ammonia, nitrate and to copper-based or otherwise harsh medications, which should be dosed with care and avoided where possible. Conservation
Archolaemus ferreirai is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (November 2018). As a narrow-range endemic restricted to two connected rivers, its long-term security still depends on those specific rapids remaining free of new hydroelectric development, mining runoff and habitat disturbance. It is not targeted by the aquarium trade and is not currently considered threatened, but its limited distribution is the kind of profile that can shift quickly if a dam or major land-use change reaches its home rivers.
