Taxonomy & naming
Archolaemus santosi was described in 2012 by Vari, de Santana and Wosiacki in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, as part of a revision that showed the genus Archolaemus to hold far more species than had been recognised — the authors called it the most speciose clade within the Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. The species epithet honours Geraldo Mendes dos Santos of Brazil's Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA), who collected the type series.
Archolaemus sits in the family Sternopygidae, the glass and rattail knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes. Gymnotiformes are bony fish but an unusual lineage, defined by an electric organ and a single long ribbon-like anal fin used for locomotion in place of a normal tail; nearly every species in the order produces a weak electric organ discharge (EOD) used for electrolocation and communication rather than for defense. Sternopygids are wave-type dischargers, emitting a continuous, near-sinusoidal hum rather than the intermittent pulses of families like Gymnotidae. The New-World knifefishes are not related to the superficially similar Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance is convergent, not a sign of kinship. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.
Morphology
Archolaemus santosi has the elongated, laterally compressed body typical of the glass knifefishes, tapering to a fine point at the tail, with a narrow dark stripe running along the lateral line against an otherwise translucent to pale body. Fish of this genus lack a dorsal fin; propulsion comes from the long anal fin that runs along most of the underside, undulating in travelling waves that let the fish move forward or backward with equal control and hover in place — useful in the fast water it favours. Reported maximum size is around 8.5 in total length.
As in other gymnotiforms the body carries an electric organ running much of its length together with electroreceptor pores scattered over the skin, the combination that lets the fish build a picture of its surroundings from the way objects distort its own electric field. The species is scaleless, a trait shared across the order that leaves the skin more exposed than in scaled fish. Data on external sexual differences for A. santosi specifically have not been documented.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Brazil, known from the Rio Jamari — a tributary in the southwestern Amazon basin and the type locality — as well as the Rio Mucajaí and Rio Uraricoera in the northeastern Amazon. It is described as benthopelagic and associated with rapids, consistent with the genus as a whole: Archolaemus is a rheophilic clade, characteristic of high-energy, fast-flowing river reaches rather than the still backwaters and floodplain lakes many other gymnotiforms favour.
That preference for turbulent, well-oxygenated water sets Archolaemus apart from many of its slower-water Sternopygidae relatives. Like other glass and rattail knifefishes it is presumably active mainly at night, relying on its continuous electric field to navigate and locate prey in water where vision offers little advantage — whether from turbidity, depth, or simple darkness after sunset.
Feeding
Detailed dietary data for Archolaemus santosi has not been documented, but the genus and family point clearly to the expected pattern: a nocturnal micro-predator picking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and tiny crustaceans — from the substrate and among cover, located largely by electrolocation rather than sight. This is the standard feeding mode across the Sternopygidae and the wider Gymnotiformes, all of which hunt in the dark using the electric sense their whole body plan is built around.
Given its rheophilic habitat, the species likely forages over rapids and rocky or sandy river bottoms where current concentrates drifting invertebrate prey, but no aquarium feeding data or detailed field diet study is available for this species.
Mating
As in other wave-type gymnotiforms, courtship in Sternopygidae is thought to run partly through the electric organ discharge itself: the continuous hum each fish produces carries information about identity, sex and reproductive state, and closely related genera in the family — most famously the glass knifefish Eigenmannia — show sex-specific discharge frequencies and shifts in signalling around spawning, the same electrical communication documented across wave-type gymnotiforms generally.
No specific courtship or spawning observations have been documented for Archolaemus santosi. Given how little of this species' biology has been studied at all, this is a case where the honest position is to note the likely mechanism from its relatives rather than describe behaviour that has not actually been observed in this species.
Breeding
Breeding biology for Archolaemus santosi is not documented; the species is essentially unknown in captivity and has not been reported bred in either home aquaria or commercial facilities. Its relatives in Sternopygidae are, in general, egg-layers that scatter adhesive eggs among plant roots or submerged vegetation, typically triggered by warm, soft, rising-water conditions during the wet season, with little to no parental care afterward — the glass knifefish Eigenmannia is the one member of the family bred with any regularity in captivity, and even that is uncommon.
Given Archolaemus's preference for fast-flowing rapids rather than the vegetated margins where Eigenmannia spawns, its natural breeding habitat and cues likely differ from the family's better-known aquarium species, but this has not been studied. Data sparse.
In the aquarium
Archolaemus santosi is not an established aquarium fish; it does not appear to be traded, and there is no meaningful body of hobbyist experience to draw on. Anyone encountering this species would need to extend general Sternopygidae and Gymnotiformes care rather than follow species-specific guidance: scaleless skin that is sensitive to ammonia, nitrate, and especially to copper-based or harsh medications, which should be avoided or heavily reduced; a nocturnal, electrosensitive lifestyle that calls for dim lighting and secure cover; and a predatory nature toward any tankmate small enough to be mistaken for prey after dark.
Its rheophilic habitat in fast rapids is a further, distinctive requirement beyond what suits most gymnotiforms in the trade — strong water movement and high dissolved oxygen would need to be replicated, which is not typical aquarium practice for this family. In the near-total absence of husbandry data, this is a species to leave to specialists and public aquaria rather than the general hobby, and captive-bred stock does not appear to exist.
Conservation
Archolaemus santosi is assessed by the IUCN as Vulnerable, an assessment dated 7 November 2018 under criterion B1ab(iii), reflecting its narrow, fragmented distribution across a handful of Amazonian rivers — the Rio Jamari in the southwest and the Rio Mucajaí and Rio Uraricoera in the northeast — and a restricted extent of occurrence typical of many single- or few-river endemics in this genus.
As a rheophilic species tied to rapids, it is plausibly vulnerable to the same pressures that threaten other fast-water Amazonian endemics: hydroelectric dam construction, which alters or eliminates rapids habitat outright, along with mining-related pollution and deforestation across its river basins. No species-specific threat assessment beyond the IUCN listing has been documented, but the conservation concern here is real and tied directly to habitat loss in its limited Amazonian range, not overstated.
