Taxonomy & naming
Archolaemus orientalis was described in 2012 by Stewart, Vari, de Santana and Wosiacki as part of a taxonomic revision of the genus Archolaemus, which raised the number of recognized species from two to six, four of them new. It belongs to the family Sternopygidae — the glass and rattail knifefishes — within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. Gymnotiformes are bony fish but an unusual lineage, defined by an electric organ and a ribbon-like anal fin used for locomotion rather than the paired fins and tail most fish rely on; they are not related to the superficially similar Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to a wholly different order.
The species epithet orientalis means "eastern," referring to its distribution in the eastern part of the genus's range, the upper Rio São Francisco basin of Brazil — geographically separate from the Amazonian and Orinoco drainages where most other Archolaemus and related sternopygids occur. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid name.
Morphology
The holotype, collected from the Rio do Sono in the Rio Piracutu basin (upper Rio São Francisco), measured about 6 in in total length. Like other Sternopygidae, Archolaemus orientalis has an elongated, laterally compressed body tapering to a fine point at the tail, no dorsal fin, and a long anal fin running along most of the underside that provides essentially all of its propulsion, letting it move forward or backward with equal control. The species is scaleless, a trait shared across the order that makes the skin and its electrosensory pores unusually exposed and sensitive.
As in other gymnotiforms, an electric organ runs along the body and generates a weak field the fish uses to sense its surroundings — a wave-type discharge in this genus, a continuous, steady hum rather than the discrete pulses used by some other knifefish lineages. Habitat

Its rheophilic habitat — rapids and waterfalls over rock and sand — suggests that, were it ever kept, it would need strong water movement and high oxygenation rather than the calmer, planted setups suited to Eigenmannia, plus secure crevice-like retreats echoing the rock cover it uses in the wild. Given how little is known of the species, and its apparent restriction to a specific stretch of Brazilian river, there is no responsible basis for hobby recommendations beyond noting it is not currently part of the aquarium trade.
