Taxonomy & naming
Brachyhypopomus palenque was described in 2017 by Crampton, de Santana, Waddell & Lovejoy as one of fifteen new species erected in a comprehensive revision of the genus Brachyhypopomus, part of the family Hypopomidae — the bluntnose knifefishes — within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. Like every gymnotiform it is a bony fish but an unusual one: the order is defined by a weak electric organ, used to build a private electric field around the body for electrolocation and communication, and by a single long anal fin that provides all of the fish's propulsion in place of a dorsal fin or a functional tail fin.
The species epithet palenque refers to its type locality, the río Palenque in Ecuador's Pacific drainage. Its closest relatives are the many other small Brachyhypopomus species scattered across Neotropical rivers, several of them, like this one, described only recently and still poorly known. As with all valid names on this site, the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is treated as the authority for the current taxonomic status.
Morphology
Brachyhypopomus palenque is a small, elongate, laterally compressed fish typical of the bluntnose knifefishes: soft-bodied, scaleless, and blunt-snouted rather than drawn out into the long probing snout seen in the related sand knifefishes. FishBase records a maximum total length of about 8 in in males and 6 in in females, making this one of the larger species within its genus but still a modest fish by knifefish standards.
As in other Hypopomidae, there is no dorsal fin and no true caudal fin; the fish moves by undulating a long anal fin that runs beneath most of the body, allowing it to glide forward or backward with equal control through tight cover. An electric organ runs along the body and, together with electroreceptor pores across the skin, generates and reads the weak electric field the fish uses to sense its surroundings. The electrocyte arrangement described for the genus points to a pulse-type discharge, consistent with other Brachyhypopomus in similar habitats, though the discharge of this species specifically has not been characterised in the literature.
Habitat
The species is known only from the río Palenque and nearby small streams and rivers in the Pacific Ocean drainage of lowland Ecuador, at an altitude of roughly 2133 ft — a trans-Andean range that sets it apart from the great majority of Brachyhypopomus, which occur east of the Andes in the Amazon and other Atlantic-draining basins. This narrow, single-drainage distribution is typical of several species named in the 2017 revision.
At the type locality the fish was recorded among leaf litter and submerged root mats in small streams and rivers, in water around 75 °F and a pH of 6.5 or higher — soft, warm, moderately acidic Neotropical stream water. As with other bluntnose knifefishes, it is presumed nocturnal and cryptic, sheltering by day in the same leaf-litter and root-mat cover it is found in, and relying on electrolocation to navigate and hunt after dark in water where vision is of limited use.
Feeding
Brachyhypopomus palenque is recorded as omnivorous, taking aquatic invertebrates from among the leaf litter and root mats it inhabits; FishBase specifically notes larval chironomid midges and beetle larvae (Coleoptera) among its prey. This fits the broader pattern for bluntnose knifefishes, which forage nocturnally over sediment and detritus, most likely locating buried and hidden prey at least in part through electrolocation rather than sight.
Beyond this type-locality diet record, no detailed feeding study has been published for the species. In the aquarium, small nocturnal invertebrate feeders of this kind would be expected to take live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, small blackworm and brine shrimp offered after dark, though this has not been documented for B. palenque specifically and the species is not established in the hobby.
Mating
No courtship behaviour has been documented for Brachyhypopomus palenque. Across the Gymnotiformes generally, the electric organ discharge doubles as a social signal alongside its sensory role, encoding information about a fish's identity, sex and reproductive state, and pulse-type species such as this one are expected to use their discharges in courtship and rival interactions in the same broad way as their relatives.
Beyond that inference from the wider order, data are sparse. The species was described from preserved specimens as part of a taxonomic revision, and no field or aquarium observations of courtship or spawning behaviour appear in the available literature.
Breeding
Breeding in Brachyhypopomus palenque is undocumented. Where reproduction has been studied in related Hypopomidae, it typically involves eggs scattered or deposited among leaf litter, root mats or sand, generally without significant parental care — but this has not been confirmed for B. palenque itself, and given how recently the species was described (2017), it should be treated as data sparse rather than assumed.
The species is not known to be kept or bred in aquaria. Any breeding account for it would currently be speculation extrapolated from better-studied congeners, which this article deliberately avoids.
In the aquarium
Brachyhypopomus palenque is not an established aquarium fish; it does not appear to be traded, and there are no husbandry accounts to draw on. Its narrow, single-drainage range in Ecuador and recent description make it, at most, a fish that might occasionally reach specialist collectors rather than the general trade.
Were it to be kept, the general rules for scaleless, nocturnal bluntnose knifefishes would apply: warm, soft, dimly lit water with plenty of leaf litter or root-mat cover to shelter in by day, gentle tankmates it cannot prey on at night, and great care with medications — scaleless gymnotiforms are notably sensitive to copper-based treatments and to ammonia and nitrate, so full doses and poor water quality should both be avoided.
Conservation
Brachyhypopomus palenque has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is classified here as Not Evaluated. It was described only in 2017 and is known solely from its type locality in the río Palenque and nearby streams in Ecuador's Pacific drainage, at roughly 2133 ft elevation.
A single-river, trans-Andean endemic of this kind is inherently more exposed than a widespread Amazonian species: habitat change, water pollution and deforestation pressure on small Pacific-slope drainages in Ecuador could affect the entire known range of the species. In the absence of a formal assessment or targeted survey work, its conservation status should be treated as genuinely unknown rather than assumed safe.
