Taxonomy & naming
Brachyhypopomus verdii was described by Crampton, de Santana, Waddell & Lovejoy in a 2016/2017 revision of the genus that split what had been a handful of recognized Brachyhypopomus into more than a dozen species, based on differences in body form, anal-fin ray counts and electric organ discharge structure. It belongs to the family Hypopomidae, one of several families within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes — and its genus name places it among the "bluntnose" knifefishes, a group of small, soft, blunt-snouted fish quite distinct in shape from the deeper-bodied ghost knifefishes (Apteronotidae) or the long-snouted sand knifefishes (Rhamphichthyidae).
The species epithet honors Lorgio Verdi Olivares, a Peruvian conservation biologist, per FishBase. As with the whole order, Brachyhypopomus verdii is only superficially similar to the unrelated Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus) — those are bonytongues from a different order entirely, and the resemblance between the two groups is convergent, not a sign of kinship. The defining trait that actually unites the Gymnotiformes is the electric organ: nearly every species in the order, this one included, produces a weak electric organ discharge (EOD) used for electrolocation and communication, generated as the fish undulates a single long anal fin rather than a tail to swim. Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name.
Morphology
Brachyhypopomus verdii is a small fish, reaching around 4.5 in total length in males and slightly less, about 4.5 in, in females, per FishBase measurements. Like other bluntnose knifefishes it has a soft, elongate, laterally compressed body tapering to a whip-like tail, a blunt rounded snout (the trait behind the genus's common name), no dorsal fin, and no true tail fin — locomotion comes from a long ribbon-like anal fin, counted at 194–225 soft rays in this species, that ripples in travelling waves to drive the fish forward or backward with equal ease. The skin is scaleless, as in all gymnotiforms.
Running beneath the skin along much of the body is the electric organ, together with the sensory pores of the electroreceptive system that read the field it produces. Brachyhypopomus verdii, in keeping with its genus, generates a pulse-type discharge — short, discrete pulses on the order of half a millisecond to a few milliseconds long, rather than the continuous wave-type hum of an Apteronotus — a discharge whose fine structure was part of what distinguished it from its close relatives in the 2016 revision. Like most of the genus it is also a facultative air-breather, an adaptation to the often oxygen-poor, still waters it lives in.
Habitat
The species is known from the río Marañón and río Ucayali drainages in the upper Amazon basin of Peru, where its type locality lies — a range that, based on current records, appears to be a relatively narrow one within the wider Peruvian Amazon rather than continent-spanning like some gymnotiforms. It occupies low-conductivity blackwater habitats typical of terra firme (non-flooded) rainforest streams and swamps: dark, tannin-stained, mineral-poor water associated with submerged roots and thick accumulations of leaf litter.
More broadly, the genus Brachyhypopomus as a whole ranges from southern Costa Rica to southern Uruguay across lowland Neotropical freshwaters, and its species are described as cryptically pigmented, nocturnally active predators that spend the day hidden in cover. That darkness and structural complexity is exactly the setting in which an electric sense pays off — eyesight is of little use among tangled roots and leaf litter in black water, and electrolocation lets the fish navigate and hunt without needing to see.
Feeding
Brachyhypopomus verdii has not been the subject of dedicated dietary study, but the genus is consistently described as nocturnally active predators of small aquatic invertebrates, hunting after dark among leaf litter and root tangles. Prey is located primarily by electrolocation: the fish's pulsed electric field is distorted by anything with different conductivity from the surrounding water, including buried or hidden invertebrates, letting it detect food it cannot see.
In aquarium contexts this style of feeding translates to small live and frozen invertebrate foods — bloodworm, small worms, brine shrimp and similar — offered after the lights go down, in keeping with the nocturnal, litter-dwelling habits documented for the genus. Given how little is published specifically on this species, care regimes are necessarily extrapolated from its close relatives rather than drawn from direct observation.
Mating
Courtship in Brachyhypopomus is built around the pulse-type electric organ discharge. Research on the genus has found that males produce a near-continuous electric "hum" to attract females, a signal so energetically demanding that it can consume an estimated 11–22% of a male's total energy budget during the courtship period — an unusually costly display for such a small fish. The discharge carries information about identity, sex and condition, and functions as a private communication channel in water too dark and cluttered for visual signalling to work.
Whether Brachyhypopomus verdii itself has been observed courting in the wild or in captivity is not documented in available sources; this account extrapolates from genus-level physiological studies rather than species-specific behavioral observation, and should be read with that caveat.
Breeding
No spawning account specific to Brachyhypopomus verdii has been located; breeding in this species is poorly documented, consistent with the wider pattern across small Hypopomidae and Rhamphichthyidae. Where breeding is known in related bluntnose and sand knifefishes, eggs are scattered or deposited among leaf litter, roots or sand rather than guarded in a nest, generally timed to seasonal water-level changes, with little or no parental care afterward.
Given that the species was only formally described in 2016/2017 as part of a broader genus revision, and that it is not established in the aquarium trade, there is no known captive-breeding record to draw on. Data sparse is the honest summary; nothing here should be read as a breeding protocol.
In the aquarium
Brachyhypopomus verdii is not a fish with an established aquarium history — it is a recently described, narrow-range species from remote Peruvian blackwater habitats, not a trade staple, and specific husbandry notes for it do not exist in the literature consulted. What follows draws on the genus and family rather than on species-specific keeping experience.
Any bluntnose knifefish in this family calls for soft, warm, dim, tannin-stained water that mimics still or slow blackwater with plenty of leaf litter and root cover to hide in by day, since these are small, cryptic, nocturnal fish easily stressed by bright light and open space. Being scaleless, as with all gymnotiforms, it would need careful attention to ammonia and nitrate and reduced doses of any medication, with copper-based treatments avoided outright. It is not a fish to acquire on impulse: if it does appear in the trade, it should be treated as a specialist's fish requiring a dedicated blackwater setup rather than a community tank.
Conservation
Brachyhypopomus verdii has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List (status Not Evaluated), which is unsurprising for a species formally described only in 2016/2017 and known from a limited number of records in the upper Amazon. Its apparent restriction to río Marañón and río Ucayali blackwater habitats in Peru means that, like many narrow-range Neotropical stream fish, it could be locally vulnerable to habitat degradation — deforestation, water-quality change, or alteration of the terra firme streams and swamps it depends on — though no population trend or direct threat assessment exists to confirm this.
In the absence of a Red List evaluation the responsible position is to note the data gap rather than assign a risk level: this is a fish whose conservation status is genuinely unknown, not one that can be assumed safe or assumed threatened.
