Taxonomy & naming
Gymnotus chimarrao was described in 2008 by Cognato, Richer-de-Forges, Albert and Crampton, distinguished from its relatives by a combination of external morphology, meristic counts, pigmentation, osteology and electric organ discharge waveform. It belongs to the family Gymnotidae — the nakedback knifefishes and electric eels — within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes, a group only distantly related to the other fishes kept in aquaria and defined above all by their electric organs and elongated, ribbon-like anal fin.
The species name references chimarrão, the yerba mate infusion traditional to Rio Grande do Sul, chosen for the fish's olive-green ground colour, reminiscent of dried mate leaves. It sits within the wider Gymnotus carapo/G. tigre species complex, a group that has been split into more than twenty describable species over the past two decades as researchers combined morphology with electric-signal data; G. chimarrao is one of these more recently recognised, narrow-range species. As with all valid names on this site, the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is treated as the taxonomic authority.
Despite the shared common name "knifefish", Gymnotus and its Gymnotiform relatives are not related to the Asian featherback or clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to an entirely different order of bonytongues; the resemblance is convergent body shape, not kinship.
Morphology
Gymnotus chimarrao has the classic banded-knifefish build shared across its genus: a stout, laterally compressed, scaleless body marked with oblique dark bars, though in this species the banding is described as faint and can be difficult to distinguish from the surrounding olive-green ground colour. FishBase records a maximum size of 9.5 in total length, modest for the genus and matching its small-stream habitat. The anal fin is very long, running most of the length of the underside and carrying a high ray count (180–213 in the source data) — this fin, thrown into travelling waves, is the fish's main means of propulsion, letting it move forward or backward with equal facility. There is no dorsal fin and no proper caudal fin of the kind seen in ordinary bony fishes.
Running the length of the body is the electric organ that gives the order its name, paired with an array of sensory pores across the skin that read the field it generates. Being scaleless, like all gymnotiforms, the skin is unprotected — a detail that matters for husbandry, since medications and water quality affect these fish more severely than scaled species. No sexual dimorphism has been documented for G. chimarrao specifically; data are sparse.
Habitat
Gymnotus chimarrao is known only from the Rio Taquari drainage within the Patos Lagoon (Rio Jacuí) basin of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil — a narrow-range endemic rather than a widely distributed species. The type locality, Arroio Grande, is a small stream only about 5 ft wide flowing through gallery forest over mud and sand substrate, at modest elevation (around 177 ft) in the low hills of the region.
At the type locality the fish was found sheltering among marginal grasses out of the main current, in soft, low-conductivity water (around 107 μS·cm⁻¹) at a recorded temperature of about 75 °F. This is consistent with the genus generally: Gymnotus favour still or slow margins of streams, swamps and floodplains rather than open, fast-flowing channels, and many are able to tolerate low-oxygen conditions by gulping air, an adaptation that lets them survive in exactly this kind of sheltered, vegetation-choked backwater.
Feeding
FishBase places G. chimarrao at an intermediate trophic level (around 3.3), consistent with a benthic, near-bottom predator rather than a specialist on any single prey type. Across the genus, Gymnotus are nocturnal hunters of small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — located in the dark largely through electrolocation rather than sight, an ability that lets them forage effectively in turbid or heavily shaded water where eyes are of limited use.
No species-specific dietary study is available for G. chimarrao, but its body plan and benthic foraging ecology point to the same pattern as its relatives: active, methodical hunting over and among submerged vegetation and leaf litter after dark, rather than sit-and-wait ambush.
Mating
As in other Gymnotus, the electric organ discharge in G. chimarrao is not simply a sensing tool but a social signal — its waveform was one of the characters used to distinguish this species from its close relatives in the original description, which suggests it also functions in species and individual recognition between fish. Courtship in the genus is understood to involve this electrical signalling alongside physical approach in the dark, though the fine detail of courtship behaviour has not been documented for this species specifically.
Breeding biology within Gymnotus is well studied in only a couple of species — notably G. carapo and G. mamiraua — where males build and guard a nest and take on parental duties. Nothing species-specific has been published on courtship behaviour in G. chimarrao; data are sparse.
Breeding
Parental care is documented in the genus Gymnotus, unusual among fishes generally, but confirmed only for a small number of species. In G. carapo and G. mamiraua, the male builds a nest — typically a shallow depression on the bottom or a shelter within floating vegetation — and guards the eggs and larvae after the female spawns into it; G. carapo has also been recorded with the male mouthbrooding free embryos. Breeding is understood to be seasonal and tied to flooding across the genus.
Breeding behaviour has not been documented for G. chimarrao itself, and it is not known to have been bred in the aquarium. Given how recently the species was described and how restricted its range is, the honest position is that its reproductive biology is inferred from close relatives rather than observed directly — data sparse for this species specifically.
In the aquarium
Gymnotus chimarrao is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade; it is a narrow-range Brazilian endemic with no evidence of commercial availability, and this entry is written from a conservation and biological standpoint rather than a husbandry one. Were it ever encountered, its needs would follow the pattern general to Gymnotidae: a dim, well-covered tank with soft, warm, near-neutral water, since like all gymnotiforms it is scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to ammonia, nitrate and copper-based medications, which should be avoided or used at reduced dose.
As a nocturnal predator that hunts by electrolocation, any Gymnotus needs secure hiding places for daytime rest and is unsuitable for community tanks with bite-sized fish or shrimp, which it will hunt after dark. Given its Data-Deficient-adjacent status and single-basin range, any specimen in the trade should be treated as a conservation-sensitive animal rather than a routine purchase, and captive-bred stock — were it ever to exist — would always be preferable to wild collection.
Conservation
Gymnotus chimarrao is assessed by the IUCN as Near Threatened, reflecting its very restricted range: the species is known only from the Rio Taquari drainage within the Patos Lagoon basin of Rio Grande do Sul, a single-basin endemic with no evidence of a wider distribution. Species confined to one small stream system are inherently vulnerable to habitat degradation, and a narrow range of this kind leaves little buffer against local pressures.
Gallery-forest streams like the type locality are exposed to the same pressures affecting much of southern Brazil's agricultural landscape: deforestation of riparian corridors, water pollution and habitat modification associated with farming. No population trend data are cited in the sources reviewed here; the Near Threatened listing is best read as a precautionary status driven by range restriction rather than a documented decline.
