Taxonomy & naming
Gymnotus darwini was described by Campos-da-Paz & de Santana in 2019 in Copeia (107(1):144–151, DOI 10.1643/CI-18-141), based on a holotype 6 in in total length collected from Igarapé Jacoca, part of the rio Botafogo drainage in Pernambuco, Brazil. It belongs to the family Gymnotidae, subfamily Gymnotinae, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes, a group of bony fishes defined by a weak electric organ used for electrolocation and communication rather than by any resemblance to other 'knifefish'. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) accepts the name as valid.
The genus Gymnotus, the banded knifefishes, is the most widespread in the order and the only gymnotiform genus to reach north of South America into Central America and southern Mexico. Despite the shared vernacular name, gymnotiforms are unrelated to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which are bonytongues from an entirely different lineage; the resemblance in body plan is convergent, not a sign of kinship. The species epithet honors Charles Robert Darwin — both as a general tribute and specifically because the holotype and paratypes were collected within the Refúgio Ecológico Charles Darwin, a reserve in Igarassu, Pernambuco, that Darwin passed through during the Beagle voyage in August 1836.
Morphology
Gymnotus darwini is a stout, laterally compressed banded knifefish, reaching at least 6 in total length in the known holotype. Like all Gymnotus it lacks a dorsal fin and a conventional tail fin, swimming instead by undulating a single long anal fin that runs beneath most of the body — a gait that lets it move backward as readily as forward through tight cover. The skin is scaleless, a trait shared across the order that leaves these fish more exposed to water-quality stress and to certain medications than scaled aquarium fish.
The diagnostic feature separating G. darwini from its many close relatives in the Gymnotus carapo species complex is its banding pattern: dark bands crossing the body are three to four times wider than the pale interbands, and the margins of those bands run nearly straight rather than jagged or interrupted. Running along the body is the electric organ that generates the species' pulse-type discharge, paired with electroreceptor pores across the skin that read the field it creates — the sensory system this whole family relies on in place of vision in dark or turbid water.
Habitat
The species is known only from a very small area of coastal Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil, north of the mouth of the Rio São Francisco: the type locality, Igarapé Jacoca in the rio Botafogo drainage, and a second population in the Formoso drainage, within the Reserva Biológica do Saltinho. Both known sites sit inside protected conservation units — the Refúgio Ecológico Charles Darwin and the Reserva Biológica do Saltinho — which is a large part of why the species has survived detection at all in a heavily cleared coastal landscape.
As with other Gymnotus, it is a fish of quiet, vegetated freshwater — creeks, forest streams and low-gradient waterways where sight is of limited use and an electric sense does the work of finding food and negotiating cover after dark. Congeners in this genus tolerate warm, sometimes oxygen-poor water because they are facultative air-breathers, gulping air at the surface when dissolved oxygen runs low; there is no reason to think G. darwini differs in this respect, though it has not been documented specifically for this species.
Feeding
No diet study specific to Gymnotus darwini has been published; what can be said comes from the genus as a whole. Banded knifefishes are nocturnal predators that hunt largely by electrolocation, sensing the electrical signature of prey hidden in sediment, leaf litter or root tangles where eyes are of little help. Juvenile Gymnotus feed mainly on insect larvae, while adults broaden their diet to include dragonfly nymphs, shrimp and smaller fish — an active, probing predator rather than an ambush hunter.
There is no reason to expect G. darwini to differ meaningfully from this pattern, given its close relationship to other members of the Gymnotus carapo complex, but in the absence of direct data any specific claim about its feeding habits would be guesswork. Data sparse.
Mating
Courtship and mating in Gymnotus darwini itself have not been documented — the species is known from only two localities and a small number of specimens, all collected for taxonomic description rather than behavioral study. What is well established for the genus is that electric organ discharges do double duty as a communication channel: alongside electrolocation, the pulse pattern carries information about a fish's identity, sex and reproductive state, and territorial Gymnotus use their discharges to signal to rivals and prospective mates in the dark.
Extrapolating cautiously from well-studied congeners, courtship in Gymnotus is likely to involve this kind of electric signalling layered over physical approach within a male's territory, but no first-hand account of G. darwini courtship exists in the literature. Data sparse.
Breeding
Breeding has not been recorded for Gymnotus darwini in the wild or in captivity; the species is far too recently described and too narrowly known for that. Parental care is nonetheless a defining trait of the genus: male Gymnotus typically build and guard a nest — often a mass of plant material, sometimes incorporating a foam or bubble component, tucked among submerged roots or vegetation — into which a female spawns, with the male then guarding the eggs and young until they begin feeding independently. Spawning in the genus is generally seasonal and cued by flooding.
There is no specific evidence that G. darwini departs from this pattern, and none that confirms it does either. The honest position for a species known from two localities and a taxonomic paper is that its breeding biology is undocumented; nothing about a captive breeding protocol can responsibly be asserted.
In the aquarium
Gymnotus darwini is not established in the aquarium trade — it is a narrow-range Brazilian endemic described in 2019 from protected reserves, not a fish collected or exported for the hobby, and nothing about its aquarium husbandry has been published. Anything said here has to be inferred cautiously from the genus.
Banded knifefishes as a group are hardy, adaptable, scaleless, nocturnal predators that need dim lighting, secure cover such as pipes or root tangles, and great care with medication — copper-based and other harsh treatments that scaled fish tolerate can injure them, so doses are typically reduced. They are not community-safe with bite-sized fish or shrimp, which they will hunt after dark, and Gymnotus in particular tend toward territoriality with their own kind, generally best kept as single specimens per tank rather than in groups. None of this is specific to G. darwini, which should not be sought from the wild given its restricted range and DD listing; this account is included for completeness of the order, not as a husbandry recommendation.
Conservation
Gymnotus darwini is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, notwithstanding a species described only in 2019 and known from just two localities in a small stretch of coastal Pernambuco. Both known populations fall within protected conservation units — the Refúgio Ecológico Charles Darwin and the Reserva Biológica do Saltinho — which affords the species real protection even given its narrow range in one of Brazil's most deforested and fragmented coastal regions; habitat loss, water pollution and the isolation of small remnant forest patches remain the general pressures facing freshwater fish across this part of the Atlantic Forest domain.
Beyond the type description, no specific population trend or threat has been documented for G. darwini itself. The species is a reminder that this corner of Brazil, though heavily settled, still yields fish new to science from within its remaining protected fragments.
