Gymnotus esmeraldas was described by James S. Albert and William G. R. Crampton in 2003, in a paper that split seven new species out of what had been treated as a single wide-ranging Gymnotus carapo. It belongs to the family Gymnotidae within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes — a distinct, distantly related lineage of bony fish defined by an electric organ and a long ribbon-like anal fin used for propulsion in place of a normal tail. Gymnotus esmeraldas sits within the G. carapo species-group, the assemblage of superficially similar banded knifefishes that the 2003 revision worked to untangle.
The species name refers to its type locality in the Río Esmeraldas drainage of western Ecuador, where the holotype (held at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, MCZ-58729) was collected. As with the rest of the genus, the common thread running through its biology is electricity: Gymnotus produce a pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD), quite different from the continuous wave-type signal of the ghost knifefishes (Apteronotidae), and used for both electrolocation and electrocommunication. Despite the shared name "knifefish", Gymnotiformes are unrelated to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance is convergent, not a sign of kinship. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.
Morphology
Gymnotus esmeraldas is a stout, laterally compressed, boldly barred fish typical of the genus, reaching at least 12 in in total length. Like all Gymnotus it has no dorsal fin and no true tail fin; locomotion comes from a long anal fin running most of the length of the underside, thrown into travelling waves that let the fish glide forward or backward with equal ease. The body is entirely scaleless, its skin smooth and directly exposed to the surrounding water.
Running along the body is the electric organ that generates the species' pulse-type discharge, paired with sensory pores across the skin that read the resulting field. This electrosense stands in for vision in the dark, root-tangled or sediment-laden water Gymnotus favors. As in other members of the genus, Gymnotus esmeraldas is also a facultative air-breather, able to gulp air at the surface — an adaptation to the low-oxygen swamps and floodplain habitats typical of banded knifefishes. Gymnotus esmeraldas is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, with no major documented threats and reported stability across the drainages it occupies in western Ecuador, some of which fall within protected areas. As a narrow-range Pacific-slope endemic, however, it belongs to the category of gymnotiform most exposed to localized pressure — habitat alteration, deforestation and water-quality decline in its home rivers — even without a current elevated threat listing.
Because the species is restricted to the Río Esmeraldas and upper Río Guayas basins rather than distributed across a continental range, its long-term security depends on the health of those specific western Ecuadorian watersheds.
