Gymnotus interruptus is a stout, boldly barred banded knifefish described in 2012 from a single clear-water stream in the Rio de Contas basin of Bahia, Brazil. Like every member of its genus it is a weakly electric fish, generating a pulse-type electric organ discharge around its body that it uses to electrolocate prey and obstacles in the dark and to signal to rivals and mates — a private sense that makes eyes almost beside the point in the turbid, root-tangled water it hunts through at night. It swims by rippling a single long anal fin rather than a tail, moves backward as easily as forward, and — like all gymnotiforms — has no scales. Named for the dark, interrupted, obliquely angled bars along its flanks, it belongs to the Gymnotus carapo species-group, a genus still being split into many newly recognized narrow-range species.

Taxonomy & naming

Gymnotus interruptus was described by Rangel-Pereira in 2012 in Vertebrate Zoology, placed in the family Gymnotidae within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. The Gymnotiformes are a distinct South American radiation defined by their electric organs and their long ribbon-like anal fin, and are not related to the superficially similar Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to an entirely different order — the resemblance is convergent, not a sign of kinship.

The species is a member of the Gymnotus carapo species-group, a complex that has been split into more than twenty distinct species over the past two decades as researchers worked through what was long treated as a single wide-ranging fish. G. interruptus is diagnosed from its relatives by a combination of fine anatomical detail: a wider interorbital distance (44.6-45.9% of snout-to-operculum distance), nine scale rows above the lateral line at midbody, 23-28 ventrally oriented lateral-line rami, 37-40 pored lateral-line scales to the first ventral ramus, and a comparatively short snout. The epithet interruptus refers to the fish's dark, obliquely oriented bands beneath the lateral line, which appear broken or interrupted rather than running as continuous bars. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.

Morphology

Gymnotus interruptus has the classic banded-knifefish build: a stout, laterally compressed body tapering to a whip-like tail, patterned with dark, obliquely set bars that appear broken along the flank rather than forming clean continuous rings. As in every gymnotiform there is no dorsal fin and no true tail fin; locomotion comes from a single long anal fin run as a travelling wave along the underside of the body, letting the fish glide forward, hover, or reverse with equal control.

The skin is entirely scaleless, a trait shared across the order that leaves these fish more exposed to water-quality stress and sensitive to certain medications. Running the length of the body is the electric organ, paired with rows of electroreceptor pores across the skin that read the field it produces — the sensory system this fish relies on far more than vision in the dim, root-choked water it inhabits. G. interruptus produces a pulse-type electric organ discharge, the signature EOD pattern of the genus Gymnotus, distinct from the continuous wave-type discharge seen in some other gymnotiform families.

Habitat

The species is known from the type locality of Riacho Cambiriba, a tributary of the Rio de Contas basin in Bahia, Brazil — a clear-water stream roughly four metres wide and up to about 1.5 metres deep, running over a sand, gravel and rock substrate with marginal vegetation along its banks. This puts G. interruptus among the coastal river drainages of eastern Brazil rather than the main Amazon or Orinoco systems that carry most of the genus's diversity.

Gymnotus as a genus is the only lineage of electric knifefishes to have spread outside South America, reaching swamps and floodplains north through Central America into southern Mexico, and its members are generally tough, adaptable fish of still and slow water. G. interruptus itself is documented only from its Bahian headwater stream, consistent with the narrow-range endemism typical of many recently split members of the G. carapo complex. Warm, soft to moderately mineralised, near-neutral to acidic water in the range of roughly 23-28 degrees Celsius, with dim light and structure to hide in by day, matches both its home stream and the broader genus.

Feeding

Gymnotus species are nocturnal predators, and G. interruptus fits that mould: it hunts after dark using its electric sense to locate prey hidden in sediment, tucked among roots, or moving in the darkness where eyes offer little advantage. Direct dietary data for this species has not been published, but the genus as a whole takes small fish, aquatic invertebrates and crustaceans, and its close relatives are well documented as opportunistic, actively foraging hunters rather than ambush predators.

Because it locates food primarily by electrolocation rather than sight, G. interruptus is not a fish that can be trusted around anything bite-sized; the same predatory habit that lets it feed efficiently in murky water makes it unsuitable company for small tankmates after lights-out.

Mating

As in other gymnotiforms, electric organ discharge is not just a sensing tool in Gymnotus but a communication channel, and courtship plays out at least partly as an exchange of electric signals between potential mates in the dark. Species and sex-specific discharge patterns let individuals recognise one another and, presumably, assess readiness to spawn, alongside physical approach and territorial signalling between rivals.

Specific courtship behaviour has not been documented for G. interruptus. What is known comes from its genus: Gymnotus breeding is seasonal and flood-triggered, tied to the rainy season, and males are territorial toward other males in the lead-up to spawning — behaviour consistent with a species that is not community-safe with its own kind outside a breeding pair.

Breeding

Gymnotidae show genuine parental care, unusual among fishes generally and a defining trait of the family. In Gymnotus, the male builds and guards a nest — commonly a mass of floating foam or bubbles, or a sheltered hollow among aquatic plant roots or substrate — and the female spawns into it; eggs are small and transparent, laid in batches of roughly one hundred to two hundred, and hatch within three to four days. The male stands guard over the eggs and, initially, over the larvae, in a seasonal, flood-triggered pattern typical of the genus.

There is no published breeding record specific to G. interruptus, and reproduction in this species remains data sparse. The parental-care pattern above is inferred from its congener Gymnotus carapo and the wider genus rather than observed directly in G. interruptus itself, and should be read as the expected mode for a Gymnotus rather than a confirmed account for this species.

In the aquarium

Gymnotus interruptus is not established in the aquarium trade and, as a narrow-range Brazilian endemic described only in 2012, is unlikely to be encountered by most hobbyists; what follows reflects the general care requirements of Gymnotus rather than species-specific experience. Being scaleless, it would need careful attention to water quality — mature filtration, low ammonia and nitrate, and reduced doses of any copper-based or harsh medication, all standard cautions for the order.

As a nocturnal predator it would need a dimly lit tank with ample cover — roots, pipes or dense planting — to retreat into by day, and should not be housed with fish or invertebrates small enough to be hunted after dark. Gymnotus are also generally intolerant of their own kind outside a breeding context, so a solitary or carefully managed setup would suit it better than a mixed-species community. Any specimen in the hobby should be treated as wild-collected from a very restricted range rather than farmed stock.

Conservation

Gymnotus interruptus is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern. This sits somewhat in tension with what is otherwise known about the species: it has so far been recorded only from its type locality in the Rio de Contas basin of Bahia, the profile of a narrow-range endemic rather than a widely distributed fish, and many recently described members of the Gymnotus carapo complex face pressure from habitat change in the coastal river drainages of eastern Brazil.

As with other single-basin gymnotiforms, the practical risks to a fish like this are the ordinary ones facing small Brazilian streams: deforestation, water pollution, and modification of headwater habitat for agriculture or development. No population trend or specific threat has been documented for G. interruptus beyond its formal Red List status, and further survey work in the Rio de Contas basin would be needed to know whether its range extends beyond the type locality.
