Taxonomy & naming
Gymnotus maculosus was described by Albert and Miller in 1995, placed in the family Gymnotidae within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. It belongs to the subgenus Tijax, one of the informal groupings used to organize the large and still-expanding genus Gymnotus. Genetic and morphological work built around its original description found G. maculosus and G. cylindricus to be each other's closest relatives and, together, the sister group to every other species of Gymnotus, a pattern read as evidence of a single ancient colonization of Central America by the genus's ancestor rather than repeated incursions.
The common name "knifefish" is shared with the unrelated Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to an entirely different order of bonytongues; the resemblance is convergent, not a sign of kinship. Within Gymnotiformes, the family Gymnotidae (Gymnotus plus the electric eel, Electrophorus) is set apart by its pulse-type electric organ discharge, in contrast to the continuous wave-type discharges of families like the ghost knifefishes. Morphology
Like other Gymnotus, the spotted knifefish has the classic banded-knifefish build: a stout, elongated, laterally compressed body, blunt-headed and thicker through the trunk than the blade-thin ghost knifefishes, tapering to a whip-like tail. There is no dorsal fin and no distinct tail fin; locomotion comes from a long anal fin running most of the length of the underside, its travelling waves driving the fish forward or backward with equal ease. The skin is scaleless and, per its common name, marked with a mottled or spotted banding pattern rather than the crisp bars seen in some congeners.
An electric organ runs along the body, generating a pulse-type discharge — brief, discrete electrical pulses rather than a continuous wave — that the fish uses alongside an array of skin sensory pores to electrolocate in the dark and to communicate with other Gymnotus. Most species in the genus stay under 12 in; the largest Gymnotus reach around a metre, but G. maculosus is a modest-sized member of the group. Habitat
Gymnotus maculosus is a Central American endemic, unusual for a gymnotiform — Gymnotus is the only genus in the order to have colonized north of South America, reaching as far as southern Mexico. The species is recorded from Pacific-slope drainages running from Chiapas, Mexico, south through Central America to Costa Rica, with an additional population in the Atlantic-draining rivers of Nicaragua.
As a benthopelagic, nocturnal fish it occupies the lower and middle water column of warm freshwater habitats, tolerating water in the range of roughly 22–28 degrees Celsius. It is a facultative air-breather, a trait shared with other Gymnotus that lets it survive in oxygen-poor swamps, floodplain pools and sluggish backwaters where dissolved oxygen can crash — habitats where its electric sense, rather than eyesight, does the work of finding food and avoiding obstacles in the dark or turbid water.
Feeding
The spotted knifefish is a nocturnal predator. Across the genus, Gymnotus hunts smaller fish, aquatic insects, crustaceans and snails, locating this prey largely by electrolocation as it works over the bottom and through cover after dark — a hunting style that suits murky or root-choked water where vision is of limited use. The sourced material does not give diet specifics unique to G. maculosus beyond this genus-typical pattern.
In captivity, Gymnotus species are kept on meaty foods — chopped fish, prawn, earthworm, bloodworm and similar frozen or live fare — offered after the lights go down, matching their natural activity pattern. Mating
Courtship in Gymnotus, as in other gymnotiforms, is thought to involve the electric organ discharge as a signal of identity, sex and reproductive state, layered on top of physical approach in the dark — the same channel the fish uses to sense its surroundings doubles as a social one. The Gymnotidae are notable among fishes for actual parental care, and reproduction in the genus is tied to seasonal flooding: rising water triggers spawning as new floodplain habitat opens up.

Like all gymnotiforms it is scaleless, which means real caution with medications (no copper-based treatments, and reduced doses generally) and sensitivity to ammonia and nitrate in anything but well-matured, clean water.
As a nocturnal, air-breathing predator, a Gymnotus needs dim lighting, secure cover to retreat into by day, and tankmates it cannot swallow — its own kind included, since Gymnotus can be territorial and aggressive toward conspecifics and similarly shaped fish. Given its facultative air-breathing, it tolerates lower dissolved oxygen than most fish but still does best in warm, clean, well-oxygenated water. For a species this poorly represented in captivity, any aquarist taking one on should treat it as a specialist project, not a routine community fish.
Conservation
Gymnotus maculosus is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 2018. That status sits alongside a genuinely restricted range: unlike many of its wide-ranging South American relatives, this species is confined to Pacific-slope drainages from Chiapas to Costa Rica plus an Atlantic Nicaraguan population, a comparatively narrow footprint for a gymnotiform.
No specific threats to G. maculosus were identified in the sourced material.
