Taxonomy & naming
Gymnotus melanopleura was described by James S. Albert and William G. R. Crampton in 2001, one of five new Gymnotus species the authors split out of an Upper Amazonian floodplain (várzea) fauna in the same paper, which also documented each species' electric organ discharge (EOD) and ecology — a description built on the fish's electrical signature as much as its anatomy. It belongs to the family Gymnotidae, within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. The order is defined by two things nearly all its members share: an electric organ running the length of the body, used to generate a weak electric field for electrolocation and communication, and a single long anal fin that provides essentially all propulsion, letting the fish swim backward as readily as forward. Despite the shared common name, gymnotiforms are not related to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus) — those are bonytongues, and the resemblance is convergent body shape only.
The genus Gymnotus — the banded knifefishes — is the largest and most widely distributed genus in the order, and the only one that reaches Central America and southern Mexico; most of its diversity, including G. melanopleura, is concentrated in Amazonian floodplain systems. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name. The species epithet melanopleura comes from the Greek mélanos (black) and pleurá (side), referring to the dark lateral banding that gives the fish its common appearance.
Morphology
Gymnotus melanopleura has the classic banded-knifefish build: a stout, laterally compressed, tube-like body tapering to a fine tip, with no dorsal fin and no true tail fin. Movement comes from a single long anal fin running beneath most of the body, thrown into a travelling wave that drives the fish forward or backward with equal ease — useful for backing out of tight cover in flooded vegetation. The skin is scaleless, and the body carries heavy dark bands or bars against a paler ground colour, the feature the species is named for.
Running the length of the body is the electric organ, paired with rows of electroreceptor pores across the skin that read the field it produces. Gymnotus species generate a pulse-type electric organ discharge — a train of brief, discrete pulses rather than a continuous wave — and the original description of G. melanopleura documented the shape and timing of that pulse (roughly 0.8–2.0 milliseconds, with head-positive and head-negative phases) as part of distinguishing it from its close relatives. The largest Gymnotus species reach around a metre in length, but most, including this one, stay well under that.
Habitat
The species was described from whitewater floodplain (várzea) habitat in the Upper Amazon basin, the seasonally inundated forest and grassland that floods with sediment-rich river water for part of the year. Floodplain Gymnotus live among flooded vegetation, root mats and leaf litter in warm, often oxygen-poor water — conditions that favour a facultative air-breather able to gulp air at the surface when dissolved oxygen runs low, a trait typical of the genus.
Gymnotus as a genus is the most widely distributed in the order, ranging from the Río de la Plata in Argentina and Paraguay north through the Amazon, Orinoco and Guianas, and is the only gymnotiform genus to reach Central America and southern Mexico. Data on the specific range of G. melanopleura beyond its Upper Amazonian type locality is sparse; like many floodplain specialists it may prove to be a narrower-range species tied to its river system.
Feeding
Gymnotus species are nocturnal predators, hunting after dark largely by electrolocation — sensing the disturbance that prey makes in their self-generated electric field rather than relying on eyesight in murky, sediment-laden floodplain water. The genus takes aquatic insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, and larger individuals will take small fish; specific dietary data for G. melanopleura is not documented in available sources, but its ecology is consistent with the wider genus.
They are not delicate feeders. Floodplain Gymnotus are tough, adaptable predators able to exploit the abundant invertebrate life of seasonally flooded habitat, and in the aquarium relatives of this species take a range of meaty foods readily once settled.
Mating
As in other gymnotiforms, the electric organ discharge in Gymnotus is not just a sensing tool but a signal used in social and reproductive contexts — each species, and often each sex, carries a recognisable discharge pattern, and courtship in the genus is understood to involve this electrical signalling alongside physical approach in the dark. The original description of G. melanopleura documented its EOD in detail, which is the basis for recognising and telling apart the five sibling species described in the same paper, but specific courtship behaviour for this species has not been separately documented.
Gymnotidae as a family show unusual parental care for fishes, built around a male-guarded nest, and it is reasonable to expect broadly similar courtship and spawning behaviour in G. melanopleura to that documented in other Gymnotus, though this has not been confirmed for the species itself — data sparse.
Breeding
Gymnotus as a genus shows genuine parental care, unusual among fishes: males build and guard a nest, often a floating mass of foam or bubbles, or a sheltered hollow among flooded vegetation, and the female spawns into it before the male takes over guarding the eggs and larvae. Spawning in floodplain species is typically seasonal, tied to the flood cycle that also drives their habitat.
No breeding record specific to Gymnotus melanopleura is documented in available sources — this is a data-sparse, recently described floodplain species with no history in the aquarium hobby, and nothing here should be read as an established protocol. What can be said with confidence is the general pattern for the genus: a male-guarded nest and real parental investment in the eggs and young, rather than the scatter-and-abandon spawning seen in many other fish groups.
In the aquarium
Gymnotus melanopleura is not an established aquarium fish — it is a recently described, narrow-interest species from Upper Amazonian floodplain research collections, and specific husbandry data does not exist. What follows draws on the well-documented care of the genus generally, which any specimen reaching the hobby would need. Like all Gymnotus it is scaleless, which means real care with medications — avoid copper-based treatments and reduce doses of anything harsh — and heightened sensitivity to ammonia and nitrate, calling for mature filtration and clean, warm water.
As a nocturnal predator, it would need a dimly lit tank with generous cover — root tangles, wide pipe, dense planting — to feel secure by day, and it is not a safe companion for anything small enough to be hunted after dark; Gymnotus are also often territorial toward their own kind. Because the genus tolerates warm, oxygen-poor water by breathing air at the surface, water flow and turnover matter less than for many fish, but water quality still does. Given how little is documented about this specific species, anyone keeping it should treat it as an experimental, specialist fish rather than a routine community animal.
Conservation
Gymnotus melanopleura is assessed on the IUCN Red List as Least Concern. As a species known primarily from Upper Amazonian floodplain habitat, this reflects the broader distribution typical of várzea specialists within the wider genus rather than dense, targeted survey coverage of this species specifically.
Floodplain (várzea) habitats across the Amazon basin face ongoing pressure from deforestation, altered flood regimes, and pollution associated with agricultural expansion and development, and narrow-range floodplain endemics are generally the most exposed within the genus. No specific threat or population decline has been documented for this species.
