Gymnotus panamensis is a stout, boldly barred banded knifefish known only from a single river system on the Atlantic slope of western Panama — one of the very few New-World electric knifefishes whose range reaches north of South America at all. Like every member of its family it swims by rippling a single long anal fin rather than a tail, has no dorsal fin, and carries no scales; and like every gymnotiform it reads its dark, murky world through a weak electric field of its own making, using brief pulses of current for electrolocation and for signalling to rivals and mates rather than for sight. It is a genuinely obscure fish outside the ichthyological literature — undescribed until 2003, now assessed as Critically Endangered, and essentially unknown in the aquarium trade — but it belongs to a genus, Gymnotus, whose tougher, more adaptable relatives are the only electric knifefishes to have ever made it out of South America and up into Central America and Mexico.

Taxonomy & naming

Gymnotus panamensis was described by James Albert and William Crampton in 2003, part of a wave of Gymnotus species split out from older, broadly defined taxa once electric organ discharge patterns and detailed morphology were brought to bear on the genus. It belongs to the Gymnotus pantherinus species-group, one of several species-groups Albert and Crampton used to organise the genus's considerable diversity. The family is Gymnotidae, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes — and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the standing authority for the valid name.

Gymnotiformes are bony fish, but unusual ones: nearly every species generates a weak electric organ discharge (EOD) around its body, used for electrolocation in dark or turbid water where eyes are of little practical use, and for electrocommunication — each species and sex carries a distinctive discharge signature that functions in territorial and courtship signalling. Gymnotus produces a pulse-type EOD, brief discharges separated by longer silent gaps, in contrast to the continuous wave-type discharge of families like Apteronotidae and Sternopygidae. These New-World knifefishes are not related to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus) despite the shared common name — the resemblance is convergent body shape, not kinship.

Morphology

Gymnotus panamensis reaches about 9.5 in in total length and, like its relatives, has the classic banded-knifefish build: a stout, elongate, laterally compressed body patterned with dark pigment bands across the anterior two-thirds, broken up with mottled cream patches — camouflage that reads as bold barring rather than the plain, uniform colouring of the ghost knifefishes. FishBase records roughly 270 soft rays in the long anal fin, which — as in all gymnotiforms — is the fish's sole means of propulsion; there is no dorsal fin and no functional tail fin, and the fish sculls the anal fin in travelling waves to move forward or backward with equal ease.

The species is scaleless, a trait shared across the order that leaves the skin exposed and makes water quality and medication dosing unusually important in captivity. Running the length of the body is the electric organ that generates the pulse discharge, paired with an array of skin sensory pores that read the resulting field. Like other Gymnotus, it is a facultative air-breather, able to gulp air at the surface when dissolved oxygen runs low — an adaptation that lets the genus persist in the swampy, seasonally stagnant floodplain waters much of it favours.

Habitat

Gymnotus panamensis is known only from its type locality, the Río Cricamola in Bocas del Toro province on the Atlantic slope of western Panama — no other populations have been documented. That narrow, single-river distribution is itself notable: Gymnotus is the only genus of electric knifefish to occur outside South America at all, ranging up through Central America as far as southern Mexico, and G. panamensis sits at the Panamanian end of that unusual northward reach.

As in the wider genus, the habitat is expected to be warm, dim, sluggish freshwater — swamps, floodplain pools and slow river margins with cover from roots, leaf litter and submerged vegetation — rather than fast, clear water. Facultative air-breathing lets Gymnotus tolerate the low-oxygen conditions typical of such still, densely vegetated water, and the electric sense does the work that eyes cannot in water that is often turbid or shaded.

Feeding

Data specific to Gymnotus panamensis are sparse, but the genus is uniformly one of nocturnal predators. Banded knifefishes hunt after dark, using their pulse-type electric sense to locate aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and small fish hidden in sediment, leaf litter and root tangles, then take them with a quick strike. They are not passive grazers or filter feeders; they are active, probing hunters that work the bottom methodically through the night.

In line with the rest of Gymnotidae, G. panamensis should be assumed to need meaty, whole-prey-type foods rather than plant matter, and to feed mainly or entirely after dark — a pattern that has direct consequences for how (and whether) it could ever be kept and fed successfully in an aquarium.

Mating

No courtship behaviour has been documented for Gymnotus panamensis specifically, but electric signalling is central to reproduction across the genus. The pulse-type EOD carries information about species identity, sex and reproductive state, and Gymnotus are known to use their discharges in agonistic and courtship interactions in the dark — effectively conducting courtship as an exchange of electric signals as much as a visual or tactile one, layered onto the same electrolocation sense that finds prey and obstacles.

Beyond that pattern, general to the family, there is no specific published account of pairing or spawning behaviour in this species. Given how little is known even about the fish's basic ecology outside its single confirmed river, mating behaviour here should be treated as inferred from the genus rather than observed directly in G. panamensis.

Breeding

Gymnotidae are unusual among fishes for showing genuine parental care, and Gymnotus follows that pattern: the male builds and guards a nest — often a sheltered hollow among vegetation or a mass of floating material — into which the female spawns, and the male then guards the eggs and larvae until they disperse. Spawning in the genus is typically seasonal and tied to flooding, when rising water opens up new cover and food.

No breeding record exists for Gymnotus panamensis itself, in captivity or otherwise — it is effectively unknown to the aquarium trade. The honest position is that its breeding biology is presumed, by extension from the genus, to follow this guarded-nest pattern rather than documented directly; nothing about spawning triggers, incubation time or fry-rearing in this species has been published.

In the aquarium

Gymnotus panamensis is not an established aquarium fish — it does not appear to be traded, and there is no body of hobbyist experience to draw on. What follows is drawn from the wider genus and from what is documented for this species, offered as a guide to what keeping it would demand rather than as tested advice.

Any Gymnotus needs warm water (roughly 72–82 °F), soft to moderately mineralised and on the acidic-to-neutral side (around pH 6.0–7.5), kept scrupulously clean — being scaleless, the genus is markedly sensitive to ammonia, nitrite and accumulated nitrate, and to copper-based and other harsh medications, which typically need reduced dosing. A dim, well-covered tank suits its nocturnal, predatory habits, and — as with all banded knifefishes — it should not be trusted with bite-sized tankmates or shrimp, which it will hunt after dark, nor necessarily with its own kind, since Gymnotus can be territorial. Its facultative air-breathing gives it some tolerance of imperfect oxygenation, but that is not licence for neglecting water quality. Given the total absence of trade or captive-breeding history, any wild specimen would represent a genuine rarity, and there is no captive-bred alternative to point toward.

Conservation

Gymnotus panamensis is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Critically Endangered, confirming the vulnerability implied by its single-locality range: it is known only from the Río Cricamola in Bocas del Toro, Panama.

Single-river endemism is exactly the pattern that tends to produce vulnerable species once a proper assessment is done, and that has proven true here: habitat alteration, water pollution, deforestation of the watershed or damming anywhere in the Río Cricamola system could affect the entire known population of this fish. No population trend or threat detail beyond the Critically Endangered listing itself is documented in the sources reviewed here.
