Gymnotus paraguensis is a stout, boldly barred banded knifefish from the Río Paraguay basin and Río Paraná drainage of south-central South America, one of more than forty species in a genus that is the only group of electric knifefishes to have spread beyond South America. Like its relatives it has no dorsal fin and no true tail, moving on the ripple of a single long anal fin, and like its relatives it swims through a weak electric field of its own making — a private sense used to find prey and read other fish in dark, sediment-laden water where eyes count for little. Formally described only in 2003 as part of a revision that split the wide-ranging Gymnotus carapo complex into many narrower species, G. paraguensis is a tough, air-breathing nocturnal predator rather than a showpiece community fish, and it is more often netted for live bait in the Pantanal than kept in a tank.

Taxonomy & naming

Gymnotus paraguensis was described by James S. Albert and William G. R. Crampton in 2003, in a revision of the banded knifefishes belonging to the Gymnotus carapo and G. tigre clades from the southern Neotropics. The holotype (UMMZ 206155, 8.5 in) came from the Arroyo Paraná in Paraguay, and the species name reflects that Río Paraguay-basin distribution. It belongs to the family Gymnotidae within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes — bony fish, but unusual ones, defined by an electric organ and a long ribbon-like anal fin rather than a conventional fin arrangement.

The description of G. paraguensis was part of a broader taxonomic untangling: what had long been treated as a single wide-ranging species, Gymnotus carapo, has since been split into more than twenty narrower species across South and Central America, of which G. paraguensis is one. The genus Gymnotus is the most species-rich group of Neotropical electric fishes and the only gymnotiform genus to reach north of South America, with species ranging as far as southern Mexico. Despite the shared common name "knifefish", Gymnotus and its relatives are not related to the Asian featherback or clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance is convergent, not a matter of kinship. Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.

Morphology

Gymnotus paraguensis reaches around 9.5 in total length and shows the classic banded-knifefish build: a laterally compressed, elongate body, blunt head, and a long anal fin running almost the length of the underside in place of a dorsal fin and tail fin. Coloration is patterned rather than plain — FishBase describes four to seven inverted Y-shaped or X-shaped dark bands crossing a paler body, though the species shows high phenotypic plasticity in exactly how that banding appears from fish to fish. The anal fin carries a very high ray count, on the order of 260–270 soft rays, and propulsion comes from waves passed along that fin, letting the fish move forward or backward with equal ease.

As in all gymnotiforms the body is scaleless, and an electric organ runs along the trunk, paired with electroreceptor pores across the skin that read the field it generates. Gymnotus produces a pulse-type electric organ discharge, quite different from the continuous wave-type signal of the ghost knifefishes — a shorter, more separated pulse suited to a genus that is also a capable facultative air-breather able to gulp atmospheric oxygen in poor water. The karyotype has been reported at 2n=54. External sexing is not well documented for this species; males of the genus in general are known to build and defend nests, which is usually the more reliable behavioural cue to sex than any external marking.

Habitat

The species is native to south-central South America, recorded from the Río Paraguay basin and the Río Paraná drainage — the same broad floodplain system that also gives Gymnotus paraguensis its Portuguese name, tuvira, and its Spanish name, morenita, in the Pantanal wetlands of Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and northern Argentina. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of tropical and subtropical lowlands, favouring slow-moving or turbid water and the vegetated, leaf-littered margins of channels, backwaters and seasonally flooded habitat typical of the Pantanal and Paraná floodplain.

That combination of murky water and dense cover is exactly where electrolocation earns its keep: a Gymnotus hunting after dark among roots and leaf litter has little use for eyes but a great deal of use for a field that reveals prey and obstacles by how they distort it. Facultative air-breathing lets the species persist through the oxygen crashes that come with stagnant floodplain pools in the dry season, a trait shared across the genus and one of the reasons Gymnotus, alone among gymnotiforms, has been able to colonise habitats as far north as Mexico.

Feeding

Gymnotus paraguensis is a nocturnal predator, active after dark and largely inactive by day, hunting by electrolocation over the substrate and among leaf litter and root tangles. The cache does not document gut-content studies specific to this species, but the genus as a whole — well characterised in the closely related Gymnotus carapo — takes worms, aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, small fish and some plant matter, an omnivorous-leaning carnivore diet typical of banded knifefishes.

In practice this makes G. paraguensis and its relatives opportunistic, methodical foragers rather than ambush specialists, working through cover at night and relying on the weak electric field to locate prey that eyes could not find in turbid, dimly lit water.

Mating

As in other gymnotiforms, the electric organ discharge in Gymnotus is not purely a sensing tool but also a social signal: pulse waveforms carry information about species, sex and identity, and related work on Gymnotus carapo shows individuals can distinguish a familiar neighbour from a threatening stranger by discharge alone. Courtship and territorial encounters in the genus are understood to involve this kind of electrocommunication layered on top of physical approach, though detailed courtship behaviour specific to G. paraguensis has not been documented in the cache.

Gymnotus is also territorial, and adults of the genus generally hold and defend individual space, which shapes how encounters between potential mates unfold — approach and assessment via the electric field before any physical pairing.

Breeding

Breeding biology for Gymnotus paraguensis specifically is not documented in available sources, but the genus shows unusual parental care among fishes and the pattern is well established in the well-studied congener G. carapo, which almost certainly reflects the wider genus: the male excavates a depression or nest, often reinforced with an expanded anal fin, and after spawning guards a main cluster of eggs and larvae in that nest while additional larvae disperse into leaf litter up to about two metres away. Spawning is oviparous and tied to the seasonal, flood-driven rhythms of floodplain habitat like the Pantanal.

Water conditions reported for the genus favour breeding activity in slow-moving, vegetated or leaf-littered water, pH roughly 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness, and warm temperatures around 72–82 °F with an optimum near 75–77 °F. There is no record in the cache of G. paraguensis being bred in aquaria; data is sparse, and the honest statement for the aquarist is that this is a wild-collected and bait-trade species with a poorly documented captive breeding history rather than an established hobby breeding project.

In the aquarium

Gymnotus paraguensis is essentially unknown as a deliberate aquarium fish — it is far more significant regionally as live bait, reportedly making up a large share of live bait sales in the Pantanal region — but where banded knifefishes of this genus do appear in the trade, the same care principles apply as to other Gymnotus and to gymnotiforms generally. They are scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to ammonia, nitrate, and copper-based or harsh medications, which should be used at reduced doses if at all. They are nocturnal, territorial predators that need dim lighting, dense cover (roots, pipes, leaf litter) to retreat into by day, and tankmates that are neither small enough to be eaten nor prone to nipping the long anal fin.

Because they are not community-safe with bite-sized fish or shrimp, and because members of the genus are often intolerant of their own kind in close quarters, Gymnotus paraguensis is best regarded as a specialist's fish for a species or predator-appropriate setup rather than a general community tank resident. Facultative air-breathing gives it real tolerance of low-oxygen conditions, but that resilience is not licence for poor water quality — the species still needs mature filtration and stable, warm, moderately soft to neutral water reflecting its Paraná–Paraguay floodplain origin.

Conservation

Gymnotus paraguensis is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, consistent with a genus that on the whole is widespread and abundant across its floodplain range in the Río Paraguay basin and Río Paraná drainage. It is not currently a species of conservation concern.

That status should be read against real regional pressures on the Pantanal and Paraná floodplain systems it depends on — wetland drainage and conversion, altered flood regimes from upstream damming, and pollution — even where the species itself is not yet flagged as threatened. Its heavy use as live bait in parts of the Pantanal is a harvest pressure worth noting, even if it has not been shown to threaten the species at range-wide scale.
