Hypopygus lepturus is a small, slender, secretive electric knifefish of South American creeks and flooded leaf litter — the kind of fish an aquarist could keep for years without seeing in daylight. Like nearly all Gymnotiformes it produces a weak electric organ discharge around its body, a private field it reads for electrolocation in the dark, tannin-stained water it prefers, and its pulse-type signal likely also carries information to other Hypopygus nearby. It has no dorsal fin and no true tail fin, propelling itself forward or backward on a long ribbon-like anal fin, and its skin is entirely without scales. It is rarely seen in the hobby and rarely studied in the wild, which makes it a fish about which honesty matters more than embellishment.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypopygus lepturus was described by Hoedeman in 1962 and is placed in the family Rhamphichthyidae, the sand and tubesnout knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Like every member of the order it is a bony fish, but an unusual one: Gymnotiformes are defined by an electric organ and by a long anal fin used for locomotion instead of a normal tail, and they are only distantly related to the rest of the freshwater aquarium fauna.

The genus name Hypopygus derives from Greek roots meaning roughly "under tail," a reference to the fish's slender, tapering rear half and the ventral fin that runs beneath it. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid name and current placement. Despite the shared common name "knifefish," Hypopygus and its Gymnotiform relatives are not related to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance in body shape is convergent, not a sign of kinship.

Morphology

Hypopygus lepturus is small and elongate, reported to reach roughly 3–4 in in length, with a slender, laterally compressed body that tapers to a fine point at the tail — there is no separate tail fin. As in other Gymnotiformes, there is no dorsal fin either; the fish moves by rippling a single long anal fin that runs along most of the underside, letting it glide forwards and backwards with equal ease. The skin is entirely without scales, a trait shared across the order and one that matters for how the fish must be kept.

Running along the body is the electric organ, paired with an array of sensory pores in the skin that read the field it generates. Hypopygus lepturus is a pulse-type discharger, producing brief, spaced-out electric pulses rather than the continuous wave-type signal of fish like the ghost knifefishes — a pattern typical of the small Hypopomidae and Rhamphichthyidae. No reliable external features are documented for telling males and females apart in this species.

Habitat

Hypopygus lepturus is widely distributed across Neotropical South America, recorded from the Amazon and Orinoco basins, tributaries of the Paraguay River, and the coastal rivers of the Guianas, with records spanning Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. The type locality is given as the Maroni basin in Suriname.

It is a fish of shallow creeks with sandy substrate, where it shelters among leaf litter, roots and fine debris rather than in open water. These are typically warm, soft, often tannin-stained Neotropical waters where visibility is poor — exactly the conditions in which an electric sense is more useful than eyesight. Sources describing the species note day activity rather than strict nocturnality, though as a small, cryptic fish it is likely to spend much of the day hidden regardless.

Feeding

Detailed dietary data specific to Hypopygus lepturus is sparse. As a small pulse-type Rhamphichthyid living among leaf litter and sand, it almost certainly feeds on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and tiny crustaceans — located at close range by electrolocation in the dark or turbid water it inhabits, in keeping with the feeding mode documented across its relatives in Hypopomidae and Rhamphichthyidae.

In the aquarium, small meaty foods suited to its size are the reasonable choice: fine bloodworm, chopped blackworm, small live or frozen invertebrates, and other foods it can take without competition from faster tankmates. Given its small mouth and cryptic habits, feeding is best done where the fish can find food undisturbed, ideally after dark or with food that settles into its refuge among cover.

Mating

Courtship and reproductive behaviour in Hypopygus lepturus are not well documented. Across the small pulse-type Gymnotiformes, the electric organ discharge is understood to carry information beyond electrolocation — a species- and sex-typical signature that likely plays a role in recognition and courtship between individuals sharing the same stretch of water — but specific observations of courtship in this species have not been recorded in the sources available here.

A 2025 study in Environmental Biology of Fishes examined life-history and reproductive traits in small pulse-type electric knifefish from Eastern Amazon streams, indicating this is an active area of current research, though data specific to H. lepturus remains sparse. Rather than speculate on a courtship sequence, the honest statement is that this aspect of the species' biology is poorly known.

Breeding

No breeding report for Hypopygus lepturus is on record in the sources consulted, and reproduction in this species is essentially undocumented, both in the wild and in captivity. In the small Hypopomidae and Rhamphichthyidae generally, where breeding is known at all it tends to involve eggs scattered or deposited among leaf litter, roots or sand, often tied to seasonal wet-season conditions, with little or no parental care afterwards — but this is a pattern drawn from the family as a whole rather than a confirmed account for this species.

There is no record of the species being bred in home aquaria. Given how little is known even about its life history in the wild, aquarists should treat any spawning attempt as effectively unmapped territory rather than expect a known protocol to work.

In the aquarium

Hypopygus lepturus is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade, and practical husbandry information specific to the species is limited. What can be said with confidence follows from its biology: it is small, scaleless, and adapted to dim, soft, tannin-stained water with a sandy substrate and plenty of leaf litter or fine cover to shelter in — a setup that mimics its natural creek habitat is far more likely to succeed than a bare, brightly lit community tank.

Being scaleless, it should be treated with the same caution given to other electric knifefishes around medications: avoid copper-based treatments and use reduced doses of anything else, and keep ammonia and nitrate low with mature filtration, since scaleless fish are unusually sensitive to poor water quality. As a small, peaceful, cryptic fish it is best kept with equally small, calm tankmates or on its own, and given time and cover to settle before it will be seen with any regularity.

Conservation

Hypopygus lepturus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, consistent with its wide distribution across the Amazon, Orinoco and Paraguay basins and the coastal rivers of the Guianas. It does not currently appear to be a species of conservation concern.

That broad range does not mean every population is secure from local pressure — Amazonian and Guianan lowland creek habitats face ongoing deforestation, water-quality degradation and, in some regions, mining-related pollution — but there is no specific evidence in the available sources that Hypopygus lepturus itself is declining. As with many small, poorly studied Gymnotiformes, the state of knowledge about its populations is thinner than the reassuring headline status might suggest.
