Hypopygus neblinae is a small, secretive electric knifefish of the Orinoco and upper Rio Negro basins, tucked into the family Rhamphichthyidae alongside the sand and tubesnout knifefishes. Like almost every member of the order Gymnotiformes it carries no dorsal fin and no proper tail, sculling forward and backward on a single long anal fin, and it navigates the dark, leaf-choked water it lives in not with its eyes but with a weak electric field generated around its own body — a private sense used to find food and other fish, and to signal them, in places where sight is nearly useless. It is a pulse-type discharger, firing brief electric pulses rather than the smooth, continuous hum of the ghost knifefishes, and it spends its days hidden among submerged leaves and roots, becoming active only after dark. Almost unknown in the aquarium trade, it is a fish for the record rather than the tank — small, cryptic and, outside a handful of museum and taxonomic papers, very poorly documented.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypopygus neblinae was described by Francisco Mago-Leccia in 1994 and placed in the genus Hypopygus, within the family Rhamphichthyidae — the sand and tubesnout knifefishes — inside the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. The order is defined by its electric organs and its ribbon-like anal fin rather than by outward resemblance to other fish, and Hypopygus itself is notable among gymnotiforms for what phylogenetic work has called reductive evolution: a simplified, compact body plan relative to its relatives, evolved alongside its electric-sensing lifestyle.

The species name neblinae references the Neblina massif in the Venezuela–Brazil border region, a landmark associated with the upper Rio Negro drainage where the genus is well represented. As with all Gymnotiformes, Hypopygus neblinae is not related to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus) despite sharing the English word "knifefish" — those are bonytongues from an entirely different lineage, and the resemblance between the groups is convergent, not a sign of kinship. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name.

Morphology

Hypopygus neblinae is small even by the standards of its family, reaching a documented maximum of about 5 in total length. Like its relatives it is scaleless, soft-bodied and laterally compressed, with no dorsal fin and no distinct caudal fin; a single long anal fin runs beneath most of the body and provides essentially all of its propulsion, undulating in travelling waves that let the fish move forward or backward with equal ease and hover in place while foraging.

Running the length of the body is the electric organ, paired with rows of electroreceptor pores across the skin that read the field it generates. The species produces a pulse-type electric organ discharge — brief, discrete pulses rather than the continuous wave typical of the ghost knifefishes (Apteronotidae) — a signal used for both electrolocation in the dark and communication with other Hypopygus. Detailed data on sexual dimorphism have not been documented for this species; where it has been studied in other pulse-type gymnotiforms, differences in discharge waveform between males and females are sometimes more informative than outward appearance.

Habitat

The species is known from the Orinoco basin — its type locality is the Río Baría in Amazonas state, Venezuela — and from the Rio Negro basin and the Rio Preto da Eva in Brazil, with records extending into Colombia and Guyana. This places it firmly within the blackwater and clearwater tributary systems of the northern Amazon–Orinoco interfluve, a region of nutrient-poor, often tannin-stained rivers draining ancient Guiana Shield terrain.

Hypopygus neblinae lives among the leaves and roots of submerged marginal vegetation rather than in open channels, and it is nocturnal, sheltering in that cover by day and becoming active after dark. As in other small pulse-type gymnotiforms, the dim or turbid conditions typical of these waters are exactly where an electric sense earns its keep, letting the fish detect prey and obstacles that eyes could not resolve in the low light and stained water.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies specific to Hypopygus neblinae are not available, but its ecology matches other small Rhamphichthyidae associated with leaf litter and root tangles: a nocturnal predator of tiny invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms — picked out of the leaf litter and fine sediment it shelters in. Electrolocation, rather than sight, is presumed to be the primary means of finding this prey in the dark, following the pattern documented across the pulse-type Gymnotiformes.

There are no aquarium feeding reports for this species to draw on, since it is essentially unknown in the hobby. Data sparse.

Mating

As in other Gymnotiformes, the electric organ discharge in Hypopygus is more than a sensing tool — it is a signature that can carry information about species, sex and individual identity, and pulse-type discharges of this kind are used in courtship and rival interactions elsewhere in the order. Whether Hypopygus neblinae specifically modulates its discharge during courtship has not been documented; this is inferred from the pulse-type electric behaviour described for the genus rather than from direct observation of this species.

Breeding

Breeding biology in Hypopygus neblinae is essentially undocumented, in keeping with the small, cryptic Rhamphichthyidae and Hypopomidae generally, whose reproduction in the wild is poorly studied. Where breeding behaviour is known in related small pulse-type knifefishes, eggs are scattered or deposited among leaf litter, roots or sand rather than in a nest, generally without a defended territory, and with little or no ongoing parental care.

There are no aquarium spawning reports for this species. Given how rarely it is seen in the trade at all, it should be treated as effectively unbred in captivity; any account of a definite spawning mode or triggers for Hypopygus neblinae specifically would be speculation. In the aquarium

Hypopygus neblinae is not an established aquarium fish; it does not appear in the hobby with any regularity, and there is no track record of husbandry to summarize beyond what can be inferred from its biology and its relatives. Anyone encountering it would need to treat it as a delicate, poorly known animal rather than a routine stocking choice.

What can be said follows from the group: as a scaleless fish it would need careful attention to water quality and to medications, avoiding copper-based treatments and using reduced doses of anything else, and as a small nocturnal leaf-litter species it would want a dim, quietly filtered tank with a soft substrate and plenty of fine cover — leaf litter, twigs and root tangles — to shelter in by day. Given its tiny size and cryptic habits it would be unsuited to a boisterous community and vulnerable to being outcompeted for food. In practice, this is a species better appreciated from the scientific literature than kept.

Conservation

Hypopygus neblinae is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2023 assessment, ref. T164538536A164538619, assessor G. N. Salvador). Its range is restricted to the Orinoco and Rio Negro basins, but within that range the population is considered stable and the species is not currently understood to face major habitat threats.

As with other range-restricted gymnotiforms of the Guiana Shield blackwater systems, the longer-term pressures to watch are the general ones facing Amazonian and Orinoco headwaters — deforestation, mining-related pollution and changes in hydrology — rather than any threat specific to this species. It is not targeted by the aquarium trade in any meaningful volume, which removes collection pressure as a concern here.
