Hypopygus nijsseni is a small, secretive electric knifefish of northern South America, one of six species recognized when Santana & Crampton revised the genus Hypopygus in 2011. Like every gymnotiform, it carries a weak electric organ down its body and reads a private electric field around itself — a pulse-type discharge, delivered in brief intermittent bursts rather than a continuous hum — to feel its way through the tangled roots and leaf litter of dim, low-conductivity blackwater and clearwater creeks where eyes are of little use. It never grows past about 4 in, is marked with a neat series of 14–16 dark bands down a pointed-snouted body, and swims, like its relatives, on the ripple of a single long anal fin rather than a tail. It is a fish known mostly from museum specimens and taxonomic literature; almost nothing has been published on how it lives day to day, and it is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypopygus nijsseni was described by Santana & Crampton in 2011 as one of six species recognized in their taxonomic revision of the genus Hypopygus, published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society. It belongs to the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes — bony fish, but unusual ones, defined by an electric organ run down the body and a long ribbon-like anal fin that does the work an ordinary tail and dorsal fin would elsewhere. Sources differ on which family currently holds the genus, placing it in either Hypopomidae or Rhamphichthyidae (the sand knifefishes); Rhamphichthyidae is treated as current here, but the disagreement itself reflects how unsettled bluntnose- and sand-knifefish classification still is.

The species epithet honours Han Nijssen (1935–2013), the Dutch ichthyologist at the Zoölogisch Museum in Amsterdam, in recognition of his contributions to Neotropical ichthyology — a naming convention common in this order, where many species are known mainly through the work of the specialists who first collected and catalogued them. As with all gymnotiforms, Hypopygus nijsseni is not related to the superficially similar Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance is convergent body shape, not shared ancestry.

Morphology

Hypopygus nijsseni is a small fish, reaching a maximum of about 4 in in total length. It has the pointed snout typical of its group and a body marked with 14–16 prominent, evenly spaced dark bands — a distinctive pattern used to distinguish it from its close relatives within the genus. Like other members of Hypopygus, it carries a long anal fin of 145–165 rays running most of the length of the underside, which undulates to drive the fish forward or backward with equal ease; there is no dorsal fin and no true tail fin in the conventional sense.

Running beneath the skin along the body is the electric organ, paired with sensory pores that read the field it generates. As in all gymnotiforms, the skin is scaleless — a detail with real consequences for how sensitive the fish is to water quality and medication. Its electric organ discharge is pulse-type: brief, intermittent pulses of up to five alternating-polarity phases separated by silence, rather than the continuous wave-type signal produced by some other knifefish families.

Habitat

The species is endemic to lowland freshwater habitats of northern South America, recorded across the Amazon, Orinoco and upper Paraguay basins and the Guianas. Its type locality lies in small streams near Tefé in the middle Amazon basin of Brazil. Within this range it inhabits low-conductivity blackwater and clearwater systems, favouring tangled root mats and accumulations of leaf litter rather than open channel or still swamp.

These are dim, often tannin-stained waters where vision counts for little, and the electric sense does the work instead — sensing nearby objects, prey and other fish by the way they distort the pulse field around the body. Data on population structure and precise habitat preferences within this range are sparse; the species is known mainly from museum survey material rather than sustained field study.

Feeding

Specific dietary data for Hypopygus nijsseni is data sparse — no published feeding study exists for the species. By analogy with other small Hypopomidae- and Rhamphichthyidae-group knifefishes, it is presumed to be a nocturnal predator of small invertebrates living in and around leaf litter and root tangles, located largely through electrolocation rather than sight.

In the aquarium, related small bluntnose and sand knifefishes generally accept fine meaty foods such as bloodworm, small blackworm and brine shrimp, offered after dark when they become active; there is no aquarium-specific feeding record for this species to draw on, so any husbandry approach should be treated as inference from its relatives rather than established fact.

Mating

No courtship account exists specifically for Hypopygus nijsseni. Across the pulse-type Hypopomidae and Rhamphichthyidae, electric organ discharge is known to play a role in social signalling and courtship: research on the related genus Brachyhypopomus has documented complete interruptions of the EOD during sexual behaviour, with subordinate males deactivating their discharge on encountering dominant fish, sometimes sustaining that silence through an entire night under social stress — evidence that the pulse signal itself carries information used in mate assessment and rivalry.

Whether Hypopygus nijsseni follows the same pattern has not been documented; the genus-level literature is taxonomic rather than behavioural, and courtship in this species specifically remains unstudied.

Breeding

Breeding in Hypopygus nijsseni is poorly documented, and no spawning account for the species has been published. Across Hypopomidae and Rhamphichthyidae generally, where breeding is known at all, these are small egg-layers that scatter or deposit eggs among leaf litter, root mats or sand, typically around the wet season, with little or no parental care afterward.

There is no aquarium breeding record for this species and no evidence it has been kept or bred in captivity at all. Any statement about its reproductive mode beyond the family-level pattern would be guesswork; the honest position is that its breeding biology is essentially unknown.

In the aquarium

Hypopygus nijsseni is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade — there is no established husbandry record to report, and it should not be assumed to be available or suitable for typical fishkeeping. Were it to be kept, its family traits carry real weight: it is scaleless, which as in other gymnotiforms means heightened sensitivity to ammonia, nitrate and to copper-based or harsh medications, calling for reduced dosing and pristine, mature water. Its pulse-type electrolocation and nocturnal habits point to a dim, well-covered tank with leaf litter and root-mat-like hiding places, mirroring the blackwater conditions of its native streams.

As a small nocturnal predator it should not be assumed community-safe with bite-size fish or shrimp, which it may hunt after dark by electrolocation even if it appears inoffensive by day. Given how little is documented about this species, any specimen in the trade should be treated as effectively wild-caught and unstudied, and kept conservatively rather than by extrapolation from better-known knifefish.

Conservation

Hypopygus nijsseni is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, consistent with a range spanning multiple major Neotropical drainages — the Amazon, Orinoco, upper Paraguay basin and the Guianas — rather than a narrow single-river endemism. It is not currently considered a species of conservation concern.

That said, the blackwater and leaf-litter habitats it depends on across this range face the general pressures common to lowland Amazonian and Guianan freshwater systems: deforestation, water-quality change and habitat disturbance. Because so little targeted survey work exists for this species, its Least Concern status rests more on distributional breadth inferred from museum records than on active population monitoring.
