Taxonomy & naming
Hypopygus ortegai was described by de Santana & Crampton in 2011 as part of a major taxonomic revision of the genus Hypopygus, published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, which recognized eight species where far fewer had been known before. It belongs to the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes — bony fish, but unusual ones, defined by an electric organ and a ribbon-like anal fin rather than a normal tail. The species was historically grouped in the family Hypopomidae, the bluntnose knifefishes, but a molecular study reassigned Hypopygus to the family Rhamphichthyidae, the sand and bluntnose knifefishes, alongside genera such as Rhamphichthys and Gymnorhamphichthys.
The species epithet honors Hernán Ortega Torres, a Peruvian ichthyologist recognized for his contributions to Neotropical ichthyology and for his part in the expedition that collected the type material. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name. As with other Gymnotiformes, Hypopygus ortegai is not related to the superficially similar Asian featherback or clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance is convergent, not a sign of kinship.
Morphology
Hypopygus ortegai is a small, elongate fish reaching only about 2–2.5 in in total length, one of the miniaturized species that give the genus its defining character. The 2011 revision describes the genus as having undergone reductive evolution: bodies are shortened and simplified, cranial osteology is reduced, the laterosensory canals are abbreviated, and the anal fin — the sole means of propulsion in all gymnotiforms — carries a reduced ray count compared with larger relatives, on the order of 100–200 rays across the genus (155–175 in this species). The head is comparatively wide with some lateral expansion, and the body bears a series of intense, broad dark bands — around 15 to 18 of them — that tend to merge toward the middle of the body.
Like all Gymnotiformes it has no dorsal fin and no separate tail fin; a long anal fin running beneath the body ripples in travelling waves to drive the fish forwards or backwards with equal ease. It is scaleless, and along its flanks run the electroreceptive pores that read the weak electric field produced by its electric organ — a multiphasic, pulse-type discharge in this genus, delivered in distinct, separated pulses rather than the continuous wave-type signal used by ghost knifefishes.
Habitat
Hypopygus ortegai is known from the upper Amazon River drainage of Peru, with records concentrated around the Iquitos and Jenaro Herrera regions. Like other small Rhamphichthyidae, it is a fish of quiet, structurally complex freshwater habitat — leaf litter accumulations, submerged roots, and marginal vegetation along slow water and creeks rather than open river channel.
These are warm, typically soft and often tannin-stained Amazonian waters, dim even by day, which is precisely the setting an electric sense is built for: where vision is of little use, electrolocation lets the fish find its way through the litter and detect prey and obstacles it cannot see. As a nocturnal, cryptic species it spends daylight hours hidden in cover, becoming active after dark.
Feeding
Specific dietary data for Hypopygus ortegai has not been documented in the literature reviewed; feeding ecology in the genus is data sparse. Based on the biology of related bluntnose and sand knifefishes, it is reasonable to infer a nocturnal carnivore that forages over and within leaf litter and fine sediment for small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and tiny crustaceans — locating them largely through electrolocation rather than sight, as its eyes are of secondary importance in the dark, structurally cluttered water it inhabits.
In the aquarium, small pulse-type knifefishes of this kind are generally offered small meaty foods — bloodworm, chopped blackworm or brine shrimp — after dark, though specific feeding accounts for this species are not available and any husbandry approach should be treated as inference from its relatives rather than established fact.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behavior have not been documented for Hypopygus ortegai specifically. In gymnotiforms generally, and in Hypopygus in particular, the electric organ discharge carries information beyond simple electrolocation — its pulse pattern varies with the individual, and in related genera discharges are known to differ by sex and to shift during social interactions, suggesting the electric signal plays a role in courtship and rivalry as well as sensing. Whether this extends to a specific courtship display in H. ortegai is not established in the sources reviewed here.
Beyond that inference from the wider order, nothing concrete is recorded about how this species finds or approaches a mate; the genus as a whole remains poorly studied in the field, with most of what is known coming from museum specimens and taxonomic revision rather than behavioral observation.
Breeding
Breeding biology for Hypopygus ortegai is essentially undocumented — data sparse. It has not been reported from aquarium spawnings, and no wild reproductive account was found in the sources reviewed. Where breeding has been recorded in related small Hypopomidae and Rhamphichthyidae, it typically involves eggs scattered or deposited among leaf litter, roots or sediment, generally without a nest and with little to no parental care, but this pattern has not been specifically confirmed for H. ortegai.
The species is not established in the aquarium trade, and there is no record of captive breeding to draw on. Any future account should treat egg-laying with minimal parental care as the working assumption from its relatives, not as observed fact for this species.
In the aquarium
Hypopygus ortegai is not a species established in the aquarium hobby; it is known from scientific collections rather than the trade, and specific keeping data does not exist. For anyone who might encounter it, the general husbandry principles for small bluntnose and sand knifefishes apply: a soft, dimly lit, sand- or leaf-litter-bottomed tank with dense cover, since these are nocturnal, cover-dependent fish that will not thrive under bright light or bare décor.
As with all Gymnotiformes it is scaleless, which means real caution with medications — copper-based treatments are best avoided and other doses often reduced — and real sensitivity to ammonia and nitrate, calling for mature filtration and clean, stable water. Any tankmates would need to be small, peaceful, and comfortable in dim conditions; given its own diminutive size, it is more likely to be at risk from larger fish than to pose a threat to them.
Conservation
Hypopygus ortegai is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. It is known from the upper Amazon drainage in Peru, and while its overall range has not been mapped in detail in the sources available here, it does not appear to be flagged as a narrow single-locality endemic under acute pressure.
As with many small, cryptic Amazonian fish, the broader risks to its habitat are the general pressures on upper Amazon tributaries and floodplain forest — deforestation, water-quality degradation and habitat disturbance — rather than any threat specific to this species. It has no role in the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not a relevant factor.
