Taxonomy & naming
Bujurquina cordemadi was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in 1986, in his monograph Cichlid Fishes of the Amazon River Drainage of Peru, the same work in which he erected the genus Bujurquina itself. The holotype (NRM 17581, in the Swedish Museum of Natural History) was collected near Lago Túpac Amaru in the Río Madre de Dios drainage of Departamento Madre de Dios, Peru; two paratypes are held in Stockholm and at the U.S. National Museum. The original combination is the one still in use — no synonyms have accumulated — and the Catalog of Fishes treats it as valid. The genus sits in the subfamily Cichlinae, tribe Cichlasomatini, the South American 'acaras', and recent molecular work (Ilves et al. 2018) keeps it there. Kullander coined Bujurquina for an assemblage of biparental delayed-mouthbrooding acaras formerly buried in Aequidens, describing thirteen new species in one stroke; the genus now holds eighteen valid species, fifteen of them in the western Amazon, and continues to grow as Bolivian and Peruvian drainages are surveyed. The genus name comes from bujurqui, a widely used Peruvian vernacular word for cichlids. The epithet is unusual: cordemadi is not a Latin descriptor or a person's name but an acronym, CORDEMAD, for the Corporación Departamental de Desarrollo de Madre de Dios, the regional development authority whose director, in Kullander's words, greatly facilitated the 1983 collecting around Puerto Maldonado that turned up the species. (The hint that this is a straightforward 'Peru-only, named-for-a-place' fish is only half right — see Habitat for the Bolivian range, and note the name honors an institution, not the river directly.)
Morphology
This is one of the smaller Bujurquina: the type series tops out at about 2.5 in in standard length (snout to tail base), so even a large adult is a modest fish of perhaps 3 in in total length. The body is the typical acara shape — moderately deep, laterally compressed, with a rounded head and the large eye of a stream fish. Coloration in life is a muted brown to olive over silvery flanks, organized around the genus's standard pattern elements: a dark lateral band running back along the side, a row of flank blotches, and a suborbital stripe slanting down from the eye. The single feature that pins the name in Kullander's diagnosis and in Loiselle's annotated key to the Peruvian species is the predorsal marking: in Bujurquina cordemadi the dark mark across the nape, just ahead of the dorsal fin, forms a complete bar — not the isolated blotch seen in the otherwise similar Bujurquina robusta, which also has a deeper caudal peduncle (12.6–14.7% of standard length, versus a slender 11.3–11.8% in cordemadi). The lips are thin, separating it from the thick-lipped eurhinus–tambotapae–labiosa group, and the caudal peduncle is comparatively short. Sexual dimorphism is modest and not well documented for this species specifically; across the genus, males tend to run slightly larger and to develop the more produced caudal-fin tips, while ripe females thicken with eggs — a genus-typical pattern noted here rather than measured in cordemadi.
Habitat
Bujurquina cordemadi is a fish of small lowland forest waters, not the main river channels. The IUCN account, drawing on Kullander, describes it in forest streams with slow-flowing, clear, tea-tinted water over bottoms of sand and thick soft mud, at elevations between roughly 150 and 984 ft. Its core range is the Madre de Dios drainage of southeastern Peru — the type locality lies near Lago Túpac Amaru, in the Puerto Maldonado area — but the species also reaches the Beni River basin of the Bolivian Amazon, part of the upper Madeira watershed, so it is shared between Peru and Bolivia rather than being a Peruvian endemic. In-situ temperature and pH were not reported for this species, and no published field chemistry exists for it; based on its habitat and on measurements from comparable western-Amazon clearwater forest streams, water is warm (roughly 75–82 °F) and slightly acidic to near-neutral (about pH 6.0–7.5), values flagged here as habitat-typical inferences, not measurements of cordemadi itself. Likewise no depth profile is published; as a small fish of shallow forest creeks it lives within the top metre or two of the water column, the figure given in the fact box as a habitat estimate.
Feeding
No gut-content or feeding study has been published for Bujurquina cordemadi, so its diet is inferred from its anatomy and from what is known of the genus. FishBase estimates a trophic level near 3.4, placing it as a small carnivore-leaning omnivore. Like its congeners it is built to forage the stream bottom and the leaf litter and root tangles of forest creeks, taking small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms — along with incidental detritus and plant matter, rather than specializing on any one food. It is not a dedicated substrate-sifting eartheater in the manner of the geophagines, but a generalist gleaner of the slow, shaded margins it inhabits. This trophic guild is offered as a genus-typical reconstruction; the specific diet of cordemadi in the wild remains undocumented.
Mating
Everything reliable about reproduction in Bujurquina cordemadi comes from the biology of the genus, because no spawning of this particular species has been written up. Bujurquina are monogamous, biparental cichlids that form a pair and jointly hold a small territory through courtship and spawning — a very different social system from the harem-holding eartheaters or the open-water mouthbrooders of the African rift lakes. Pairs are territorial during breeding but, at this small size and in a leaf-littered stream, not the wreckers that larger neotropical cichlids can be. The defining behavior, the one Kullander used to unite the genus, sits at the boundary between substrate spawning and mouthbrooding, which makes pair formation and the choice of a spawning site central to how these fish reproduce — the leaf or stone they spawn on is not a permanent nest but a movable platform from which the brood is soon taken up.
Breeding
Bujurquina are biparental delayed mouthbrooders — also called larvophile or, in older usage, 'primitive' mouthbrooders — and this is the genus's signature trait. The pair first spawns conventionally onto a surface, but in the wild that surface is characteristically a movable leaf rather than a fixed cave or rock (a behavior documented for these eartheater-allied cichlids by Cichocki and recounted in the American Cichlid Association's Buntbarsche Bulletin), which the parents can shift if the site is disturbed. After the eggs are fanned and guarded for a day or two, the parents take the developing embryos into their mouths to finish incubation, then release free-swimming fry that they continue to guard and that bolt back into the parents' mouths when threatened. In the best-documented congener, Bujurquina vittata, the male is the first to pick up the brood and carries it for about five days before mouthbrooding duties are shared with the female — a 'cedocavus, male-leads' pattern in George Barlow's terminology. Clutch sizes have not been counted for cordemadi; the genus lays small clutches (FishBase places fecundity below a thousand eggs, and these are small fish), so a brood of a few dozen to perhaps a couple of hundred eggs is the realistic expectation, flagged here as a genus-typical estimate rather than a measured figure. The combination of substrate spawning followed by oral incubation, biparental care, and a leaf as the initial nest is exactly what makes Bujurquina worth featuring, and it is the most interesting thing about an otherwise obscure little fish.
In the aquarium
Bujurquina cordemadi is genuinely rare in the hobby — the Cichlid Room Companion lists it as essentially uncollected for the trade, and no captive-care record has appeared in the aquarium literature. What follows draws on the general husbandry of Bujurquina and of similar small western-Amazon acaras (Bujurquina vittata, Bujurquina oelemariensis, smaller Laetacara), flagged honestly as genus-typical inference wherever species-specific data is absent.
A pair is comfortable in a tank of around 25 US gal (roughly 90 × 15.5 in footprint). The water should replicate their home: warm (75–82 °F), soft to moderately soft, and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.5). In the wild these fish live in dimly lit forest streams over soft mud and leaf litter, so the aquarium should lean toward dark substrate — fine sand or a sand-and-leaf layer — broken up with dried leaves (Indian almond, oak), small root tangles, and a few flat stones or broad broadleaf sections that can serve as spawn sites. Strong flow is not required; gentle circulation and diffuse light suit them better than bright, exposed tanks. Robust plants (Anubias, Java fern, floating cover) can fill out the scape without demanding chemistry they cannot meet.
Tankmates should be chosen carefully. Bujurquina cordemadi is small and, outside of breeding condition, comparatively peaceful; it should not be mixed with boisterous or significantly larger cichlids. Good neighbours are small, soft-water characins (cardinal tetras, hatchetfish), dwarf corydoras, and similarly peaceable dwarf cichlids at the opposite end of the tank. During spawning the pair will become noticeably territorial in the immediate vicinity of their chosen leaf, and tankmates able to be driven into open water or behind sight breaks are far preferable to anything that will press back and disrupt the brood. Avoid the larger eartheaters or any robust South American cichlid that would dwarf this fish.
The defining challenge in keeping Bujurquina is reproducing the delayed mouthbrooding cycle, and getting it right depends on not pulling the pair apart during handovers. Provide at least one broad, smooth-surfaced movable leaf or similar substrate for egg deposition; pairs will often reject conventional flowerpot caves in favour of an open, relocatable site. After spawning, resist the urge to intervene — the fish will fan the eggs for roughly one to two days before taking them up, and the brooding adult (typically the male first, then shared) will look hollow-cheeked and refuse food for the five-to-ten days of oral incubation. Premature net-separations or siphoning events at this stage are the most commonly reported cause of lost broods in congeners. Fry can be raised on baby brine shrimp nauplii and microworms once free-swimming.
Difficulty is moderate for experienced soft-water cichlid keepers, higher for beginners: the main hurdles are sourcing the fish at all, maintaining reliably soft acidic water, and reading the mouthbrooding cycle without disturbing it. This is not a fish recommended as a first cichlid, but for the keeper already comfortable with Apistogramma or Laetacara the step to a Bujurquina is a natural and rewarding one.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Bujurquina cordemadi as Least Concern (assessed 25 April 2014, published 2016; assessors Sarmiento & Correa), on the grounds that it is widely distributed across the Peruvian and Bolivian Amazon, appears to be common, faces no major identified threats, and occurs inside protected areas — specifically Peru's Bahuaja-Sonene National Park and the Tambopata National Reserve, both in the Madre de Dios region. The population trend is listed as unknown and the assessment itself is flagged as needing updating, reflecting how little dedicated study the species has had. It is essentially absent from the ornamental trade: its home drainage lies far from Iquitos, the hub of Peru's aquarium-fish exports, so unlike the Bujurquina species of the central Peruvian Amazon it is seldom collected for the hobby. The broader context is the Madre de Dios region's own pressures — this part of the southwestern Amazon has been a focus of alluvial gold mining, with its attendant mercury contamination and stream sedimentation, alongside deforestation and road-driven development. None of these is documented as a present threat to this particular cichlid, and its occurrence within two large protected areas is a genuine buffer, but they are the backdrop against which a small, narrow-habitat, poorly-monitored forest-stream fish should be read.
