Taxonomy & naming
Sternarchella schotti was first described by Franz Steindachner in 1868 as Sternarchus schotti, and was later moved into the genus Sternarchella by Carl Eigenmann in 1905. It belongs to the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes — a lineage of bony fish defined by an electric organ and a long ribbon-like anal fin rather than by any resemblance to typical aquarium fish. The Apteronotidae are distinguished within the order by an electric organ built from modified nerve tissue rather than muscle, giving them the fastest, highest-frequency discharges of any gymnotiform.
The name has nothing to do with the Asian featherback or clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which are bonytongues from an unrelated order; the similar body plan is convergent, not a sign of kinship. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the current valid name and the Steindachner/Eigenmann history. Sternarchella schotti is one of a number of Sternarchella species in Amazonian and Orinocan deep channels, most of which are far less familiar to aquarists than its relative the black ghost knifefish, Apteronotus albifrons.
Morphology
Like other ghost knifefishes, Sternarchella schotti has a strongly compressed, blade-shaped body that tapers toward the tail, brown to black in colour with a slender pale band crossing the base of the caudal peduncle. There is no dorsal fin, and the caudal fin is reduced to a very small remnant; almost all propulsion comes from the long anal fin running beneath the body, which the fish undulates to move forward, backward, or hover in place. FishBase records a large eye relative to head length (roughly 7–10%), a useful field mark among the deep-channel Apteronotidae even though vision plays a secondary role to electroreception in how the fish actually navigates.
The species reaches up to about 15.5 in in total length, making it a substantial fish by ghost-knifefish standards — smaller than the black ghost's roughly 19.5 in ceiling, but far larger than the juveniles most aquarists associate with the family. As in other Apteronotidae, the skin is scaleless and lined with electroreceptor pores, and the electric organ runs the length of the body. Sexes are not reliably distinguished by external appearance in the cache material available for this species.
Habitat
Sternarchella schotti is native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins of South America, recorded from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela, with its type locality at Manaus on the Amazon. FishBase describes it as benthopelagic, found in deep river channels rather than shallow margins or still water — the same dim, current-swept, sediment-rich habitat favoured by many of its Sternarchella and Sternarchorhynchus relatives.
These deep channels are effectively dark even by day, which is precisely the setting electrolocation is built for: an active electric field lets the fish sense obstacles, prey and other knifefish where eyesight would be nearly useless. Data on this species' precise water chemistry in the wild is sparse, but it shares the warm, soft, near-neutral Neotropical river water typical of the family.
Feeding
Sternarchella schotti is nocturnal and carnivorous, foraging after dark using its electric sense to locate prey in the dim water of deep river channels. One notable and distinctive behaviour recorded for this species is that it preys on the tails of other electric fish — nipping at the anal fin and tail region of fellow gymnotiforms rather than consuming them whole, an unusual foraging strategy documented among some deep-channel Apteronotidae.
Beyond this fin-nipping habit, detailed dietary data for the species is sparse; it is presumed, in line with its relatives, to also take small benthic invertebrates such as insect larvae and worms located by electrolocation. In captivity — where the species is rarely kept — meaty frozen and live foods offered after dark would be the expected approach, following the pattern used for other ghost knifefishes.
Mating
As in other Apteronotidae, courtship in Sternarchella schotti is understood to be mediated substantially through its electric organ discharge. Research on the family's wave-type EOD shows that discharge frequency, amplitude and duration carry information about a fish's identity, sex, breeding condition and social rank, and that breeding individuals modulate their signal as part of courtship — an electrical exchange that stands in for much of the visual and chemical signalling used by other fish in clearer, brighter water.

Sternarchella schotti is seldom encountered in the aquarium trade, and husbandry information specific to the species is limited. What can be said follows directly from its biology and its relatives: it is a scaleless fish, sensitive to ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, and requiring careful, reduced dosing of any copper-based or harsh medication. As a deep-channel, nocturnal predator it needs a dim, well-covered tank with tube or cave hides to shelter in by day, mature filtration, and warm, clean, gently moving water.
At up to roughly 15.5 in, it needs a large aquarium and is not a fish for small or brightly lit community setups; like other ghost knifefishes it will hunt smaller tankmates after dark by electrolocation, so companions should be too large to be eaten and not prone to nipping its long anal fin. Because so little husbandry data exists for this exact species, prospective keepers should treat it as an advanced, specialist fish and lean on general Apteronotidae care as a starting point rather than assume species-specific requirements are known.
Conservation
Sternarchella schotti is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List, reflecting its wide distribution across both the Amazon and Orinoco basins, which spans multiple countries and river systems and provides considerable resilience against localized threats.
As with other widely distributed Amazonian and Orinocan fish, this status describes the species as a whole rather than every population within it; deep-channel habitat can still be affected by damming, sedimentation and broader basin-scale pressures such as deforestation and mining-related pollution.
