Taxonomy & naming
Sternarchella orinoco was described by Francisco Mago-Leccia in 1995 and belongs to the family Apteronotidae — the ghost knifefishes — within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. It sits in the tribe Sternarchellini, a group of roughly ten deep-channel electric fish species distributed across the Amazon and Orinoco basins, ranging from about 6–19.5 in in total length. Within Sternarchellini, S. orinoco is one of only two species retaining a ventral (underslung) mouth, standing apart from a larger clade of seven species with a terminal or superior mouth — a distinction taxonomic revision work has used to help resolve the genus's internal relationships.
As in all Apteronotidae, the electric organ is derived from modified nerve tissue rather than muscle, giving the family the fastest, highest-frequency wave-type discharges of any knifefish group. These New-World fish are unrelated to the superficially similar Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to an entirely different order — the resemblance is convergent body shape, not kinship. Morphology
Sternarchella orinoco reaches a maximum of about 8.5 in total length, modest for the tribe, whose members span 6–19.5 in. Like its relatives it has the classic ghost-knifefish silhouette: a laterally compressed, blade-like body tapering to a slender tail, no dorsal fin, and no conventional tail fin — locomotion comes from an elongated anal fin run in travelling waves along the underside, letting the fish move forward or backward with equal control. FishBase notes a sub-terminal (underslung) mouth and a comparatively small interorbital distance, at 17–21% of head length, among the diagnostic features taxonomists use to separate it from its closest congeners.
Running the length of the body is the electric organ that gives the family its name, paired with an array of skin pores that sense the field it produces.
