Sternarchogiton nattereri was described by Franz Steindachner in 1868 and belongs to the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes of tropical South America. Like its relatives, it is a bony fish but an unusual one: the Apteronotidae carry an electric organ built from modified nerve tissue rather than muscle, giving them the fastest, most refined electric discharges in the order, used to sense the world in the dark, murky rivers they inhabit.
The species has a tangled taxonomic history that is itself instructive.
