Taxonomy & naming
Sternarchogiton porcinum was described by Eigenmann and Allen in 1942 and belongs to the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Like the rest of the order it is a bony fish but an unusual one, defined by an electric organ and a ribbon-like anal fin rather than by the fin arrangement typical of most freshwater fish. Apteronotidae is set apart within Gymnotiformes by an electric organ built from modified nerve cells rather than muscle tissue, which produces the fastest and steadiest discharges of any knifefish family.
The genus Sternarchogiton was revised in a 2007 taxonomic study (Copeia) that defined S. porcinum partly by the straight dorsal profile of its laterally compressed head, distinguishing it from close relatives. A related nominal form, Sternarchogiton preto, was historically conflated with S. porcinum in some Brazilian Amazon and Orinoco material; subsequent molecular work separated related lineages into the genus Tenebrosternarchus. The "knifefish" name is shared with the unrelated Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to a wholly different order and resemble Gymnotiformes only by convergent body shape, not by descent. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.
Morphology
Sternarchogiton porcinum reaches up to about 12 in in total length, a mid-sized member of its family. Like other ghost knifefishes it is laterally compressed and blade-shaped, with no dorsal fin and no proper tail fin; locomotion comes from an elongated anal fin running along most of the underside, thrown into travelling waves that move the fish forward or backward with equal ease. A 2007 genus revision (Copeia) singles out the straight dorsal profile of the laterally compressed head as a diagnostic feature separating this species from its closest relatives within Sternarchogiton.
The eyes are small and covered by a thin membrane, reflecting a life spent largely in fast, often turbid water where vision counts for little. As in the rest of the family, an electric organ runs the length of the body, paired with electroreceptor pores across the skin; the species produces a wave-type discharge in the neighbourhood of 900 Hz, among the higher frequencies recorded in the genus. The skin is scaleless, as in all gymnotiforms — a detail with direct consequences for how sensitive the fish is to water quality and medication.
Habitat
This species is a deep-channel specialist of the western Amazon and Orinoco drainages, recorded from the Río Huallaga, Río Napo and Río Amazonas in Peru and the Río Orinoco in Venezuela. It lives in swiftly flowing creeks and river channels over sandy substrates, favouring well-oxygenated water rather than the sluggish backwaters and floodplain lakes that suit some other gymnotiforms.
The wider family lives in warm, often tannin-stained South American river water, and the deep, fast channels S. porcinum occupies are darker still — an environment where an electric sense outperforms eyesight. Specific temperature and pH figures for this species are not well documented, but its family generally occupies warm, moderately soft, near-neutral to slightly alkaline flowing water, and its own preference for swift, oxygen-rich channels sets it apart from the more sluggish-water tolerant genera in the order.
Feeding
As with other Apteronotidae, Sternarchogiton porcinum is presumed to be a nocturnal carnivore, hunting small invertebrates in and around the sandy, swift-flowing channels it inhabits, locating them chiefly by electrolocation rather than sight. Detailed dietary data specific to this species is sparse in the available literature, and its natural feeding ecology has not been closely studied compared with the trade species in the family.
Because it is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby, there is no meaningful body of hobbyist observation on feeding behaviour in captivity to draw on here; what can be said follows from its place in a family of nocturnal, electrolocating predators of benthic and midwater invertebrates.
Mating
Courtship biology in this species has not been directly studied, but the broader pattern in Apteronotidae is well established and almost certainly applies. The wave-type electric organ discharge is not purely a sensing tool — it also carries information about a fish's identity, sex and reproductive readiness, and in the best-studied relatives (the brown ghost, Apteronotus leptorhynchus) males and females shift discharge frequency during courtship in an electrical exchange. Given that S. porcinum discharges at roughly 900 Hz, a similarly high, steady wave-type frequency, it is reasonable to expect electric signalling plays a comparable role in its own courtship, though this has not been directly documented for the species.
Nothing specific is recorded about pair formation, spawning site selection or physical courtship behaviour in S. porcinum; data is sparse for this and most deep-channel Sternarchogiton species, which are rarely observed even in the wild outside of taxonomic collecting.
Breeding
Sternarchogiton porcinum is an egg-layer, in keeping with the rest of Apteronotidae, but breeding — whether in the wild or captivity — is poorly documented for this species specifically. At the family level, spawning is understood to occur seasonally, tied to the rainy season, with eggs scattered among cover such as roots and vegetation and no substantial parental care afterward; captive breeding across the family is rare and generally limited to a handful of trade species bred commercially under hormone induction rather than in home aquaria.
As a deep-channel species that is essentially never kept, there is no record of S. porcinum breeding in captivity. The honest summary is that its breeding biology is data sparse, and what is known is inferred from its family rather than observed directly in this species.
In the aquarium
Sternarchogiton porcinum is not a hobby fish. It is a deep-channel specialist rarely, if ever, encountered in the aquarium trade, and there is essentially no hobbyist record of it being kept. Anyone who did encounter it should treat it as they would any Apteronotidae: scaleless and therefore highly sensitive to ammonia, nitrate and to copper-based or harsh medications, which should be avoided or heavily reduced; nocturnal and electrolocating, so it needs dim lighting, secure cover, and tankmates too large to be treated as prey after dark.
Its natural preference for swift, well-oxygenated water over sandy substrate suggests it would need strong water movement and high dissolved oxygen to do well, a harder environment to replicate than the calmer water many trade knifefishes tolerate. Given how little is known of its husbandry requirements and how absent it is from the trade, there is no responsible way to give specific stocking or feeding guidance beyond these general family-level precautions.
Conservation
Sternarchogiton porcinum is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, reflecting its distribution across a broad stretch of the western Amazon and Orinoco basins in Peru and Venezuela rather than any specific evidence of abundance. As a species that is not targeted for the aquarium trade and lives in deep river channels away from most direct human disturbance, it faces no acute, documented threat.
As with many Amazonian and Orinoco river fish, the longer-term pressures on its habitat are the general ones facing the basin: deforestation, damming and pollution affecting river flow, oxygenation and sediment in the channels it depends on. No species-specific conservation concern has been raised, and its Least Concern status should be read against the very wide range over which it has been recorded rather than as evidence of detailed population monitoring.
