Brachyrhaphis hartwegi is a small Central American livebearer of fast, shallow streams along the Pacific slope, ranging from the Mexican state of Chiapas into Guatemala. Described in Rosen and Bailey's landmark 1963 revision of the Poeciliidae, it is one of the lesser-known members of a genus better represented in the hobby by the more pugnacious B. rhabdophora and B. roseni. A modest, robust toothcarp of riffles and runs, it shares the genus's hallmarks — internal fertilisation, live birth and pronounced sexual dimorphism — while remaining a sparsely documented fish whose natural history is known mostly from collection records and the broad biology of its relatives.

Taxonomy & naming

Brachyrhaphis hartwegi was described by Donn Eric Rosen and Reeve Maclaren Bailey in 1963, in their monograph "The poeciliid fishes (Cyprinodontiformes), their structure, zoogeography, and systematics" (Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History 126), a work that remains the foundation of poeciliid classification. The type locality is a tributary to the Río Jalapa at Finca Esperanza, in the Soconusco District of Chiapas, Mexico — the source of both the species' best-known common name, the Soconusco gambusia, and its Spanish name, guayacón de Soconusco. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Brachyrhaphis hartwegi Rosen & Bailey, 1963 as the valid name.

The species sits in the genus Brachyrhaphis within the subfamily Poeciliinae of the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers. Brachyrhaphis is a genus of roughly a dozen species distributed from southern Mexico through Central America to Panama, ecologically and superficially resembling the mosquitofishes (Gambusia), with which the common name "gambusia" reflects a long-standing confusion. The specific epithet honours Dr Norman Edouard "Kibe" Hartweg (1904–1964), an American herpetologist known for his work on turtle taxonomy.

As with much of the genus, the species' literature is thin: it appears in faunal inventories, regional checklists and the original description, but lacks the dedicated behavioural and life-history studies devoted to better-known congeners such as B. rhabdophora. Most of what can be said about its biology is inferred from collection data and from the well-established patterns shared across Brachyrhaphis and the Poeciliinae generally.

Morphology

Brachyrhaphis hartwegi is a small, deep-bodied livebearer showing the marked sexual size dimorphism typical of the family. Females reach about 2 in in total length and are the larger, fuller-bodied sex; males are smaller, attaining roughly 1.5 in TL. The body is laterally compressed and robust, built for holding position in flowing water rather than for sustained open-water swimming.

The defining male character, shared across the Poeciliinae, is the gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm to the female internally. Gravid females carry the developing brood internally and, as in related poeciliids, typically show a darkened abdominal region when carrying advanced young. Detailed, published descriptions of pigment pattern and fin markings for this species are sparse in the freely available literature, and finer diagnostic features are best left to the original description rather than asserted here; data on live coloration is sparse.

The genus name Brachyrhaphis — from the Greek brachys, "short," and rhaphis, "needle" — refers to the form of the gonopodium, the "short needle" that distinguishes these fishes. The combination of a compact, dimorphic body and the male's modified anal fin places B. hartwegi unambiguously among the live-bearing toothcarps.

Habitat

The species occupies fresh, shallow, flowing waters along the Pacific slope of southern Mexico and adjacent Guatemala. The type material and subsequent records come from streams of the Soconusco region of Chiapas, with the species documented from drainages including the Cintalapa system; a frequently illustrated male originates from the Río Doña María in the Cintalapa drainage of Chiapas. It is a non-migratory freshwater fish of small watercourses rather than large rivers or lakes.

FishBase characterises the species as inhabiting shallow flowing water and reports a tropical thermal range of roughly 75–82 °F, with water chemistry around pH 7.0–7.5 and hardness up to about 5 dH — neutral, soft to moderately soft, warm stream water. These figures describe a fish of clear, well-oxygenated riffles and runs, the kind of habitat typical of the genus across Central America.

Because the species is restricted to the Pacific-slope drainages of Chiapas and neighbouring Guatemala, its range is regional rather than continental. The broad biological tolerance characteristic of poeciliids likely buffers it against ordinary seasonal fluctuation in its streams, but published ecological detail beyond collection records and the FishBase environmental envelope is limited.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study of Brachyrhaphis hartwegi is available in the accessible literature, and FishBase reports an estimated trophic level of about 3.4 — a value consistent with a small, generalist carnivore-leaning omnivore rather than a strict herbivore. In this the species follows the general Brachyrhaphis pattern, in which members take small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, and miscellaneous drifting items from the water column and surface of their stream habitats.

Like other small poeciliids of flowing water, B. hartwegi is best understood as an opportunistic micro-predator and grazer, supplementing animal prey with algae, diatoms and detritus as availability dictates. The relatively elevated trophic level suggests a diet weighted toward small invertebrate prey, in keeping with the genus's reputation for being more predatory and aggressive than the typical community livebearer.

In the absence of population-level diet data, specific prey items for this species should not be asserted; the dietary picture here rests on the genus-level pattern and the FishBase trophic estimate rather than on direct observation of B. hartwegi itself.

Mating

Brachyrhaphis hartwegi reproduces by internal fertilisation, the defining reproductive mode of the Poeciliidae. Males possess the gonopodium, a modified anal fin used to transfer sperm directly into the female; there is no external spawning and no egg-scattering. As in poeciliids generally, females are able to store viable sperm internally, so that a single mating can fertilise more than one successive brood.

Courtship and male reproductive behaviour have not been described in detail for this species. Across Brachyrhaphis, however, males are known to pursue females persistently and to employ gonopodial thrusts, with the genus tending toward a more aggressive temperament than the placid community livebearers of the hobby. The pronounced size dimorphism — larger females, smaller males — is the structural backdrop to this internally fertilising mating system.

Where superfetation (the carrying of two or more broods at different developmental stages simultaneously) occurs in poeciliids it does so unevenly across genera, and it has not been documented as a confirmed feature of B. hartwegi specifically; it should therefore not be assumed for this species. Data on the fine details of its mating behaviour is sparse.

Breeding

Brachyrhaphis hartwegi is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. FishBase reports a reproductive cycle in which a female gives birth approximately every 28 days, producing broods of about 10 to 20 young — a roughly monthly cadence consistent with the live-bearing toothcarp pattern.

The newborn fry are fully formed miniature fish, able to swim and feed immediately. As in poeciliids broadly, there is no parental care, and the adults — including the mother — may prey on the fry, so in nature survival depends on cover and on the fry's own ability to disperse into shallow margins and vegetation. Gestation length and brood size in livebearers vary with temperature and with the female's size and condition, so the FishBase figures are best read as typical values rather than fixed constants.

Beyond the ~28-day cycle and 10–20 brood size reported by FishBase, detailed reproductive data for this species — gestation period in days, age at maturity, and any seasonal breeding pattern in the wild — is not available in the accessible sources, and is noted here as data sparse rather than estimated.

In the aquarium

Brachyrhaphis hartwegi is an uncommon fish in the aquarium hobby, kept mainly by livebearer specialists rather than appearing in the general trade, and much of the freely available husbandry text for it sits behind paywalls. What guidance can be offered rests on its known stream habitat and on the well-documented requirements of the genus rather than on a large body of species-specific aquarium experience.

The environmental envelope reported by FishBase — roughly 75–82 °F, pH near 7.0–7.5, and soft to moderately soft water up to about 5 dH — points to a warm, clean, well-oxygenated set-up with good flow that reflects the riffle-and-run streams the species comes from. As a member of a genus noted for being more boisterous and nippy than typical community livebearers, B. hartwegi is better suited to a species tank or to robust, fast-moving tankmates than to delicate long-finned community fish; this is a temperament caution drawn from the genus rather than a measured trait of this species.

Given the gaps in the record, an aquarist keeping this fish is essentially working from genus-level husbandry and first principles: maintain clean, flowing, well-oxygenated water in the reported temperature and chemistry range, expect persistent males, and provide cover for fry if breeding is the goal.

Conservation

Brachyrhaphis hartwegi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The assessment was carried out on 28 March 2018 and published in the IUCN 2019-2 release (species ID 191722; assessment DOI 10.2305/IUCN.UK.2019-2.RLTS.T191722A2000075.en), reflecting a species that is not currently considered to be at risk of extinction at the global level.

As a stream-dwelling fish of a defined regional range on the Pacific slope of Chiapas and Guatemala, the species is nonetheless tied to the health of its watersheds, and the general pressures on Central American freshwater habitats — water extraction, pollution, deforestation and land-use change — apply to it as they do to other small-stream fishes of the region. The Least Concern listing indicates that, at the time of assessment, these pressures had not pushed the species toward a threatened category.
