Taxonomy & naming
Cnesterodon pirai was described in 2009 by Aguilera, Mirande and Azpelicueta in the journal Zootaxa (volume 2195, pages 34–42), on the basis of material collected from the arroyo Almeida in Misiones, north-eastern Argentina. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Cnesterodon pirai Aguilera, Mirande & Azpelicueta, 2009 as the valid name, and the Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of Argentina (CLOFFAR, Mirande & Koerber 2015) confirms its placement within the genus Cnesterodon in the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers.
The genus Cnesterodon is a small assemblage of South American poeciliids centred on the río de la Plata and río Paraná drainages; its best-known member is the widespread Cnesterodon decemmaculatus. Within this group C. pirai is diagnosed by a combination of fine characters rather than any single dramatic feature: a long, pointed snout (16.7–28.7% of head length), twelve to thirteen epipleural ribs, teeth borne on the fourth ceratobranchial, and a constriction on the unpaired appendix of the male gonopodium. It is distinguished from congeners such as C. raddai by these meristic and osteological details together with its flank pigmentation.
The genus name Cnesterodon derives from the Greek knester (a scraper), referring to the dentition typical of the group. The specific epithet pirai comes from the Guaraní pira, meaning fish, with the diminutive suffix -i, alluding to the small size of Cnesterodon species; it is a noun in apposition and not an eponym. The common name Almeida toothcarp, applied in FishBase, simply records the stream — the arroyo Almeida — from which the species is known.
Morphology
Cnesterodon pirai is a very small fish. The original description records a maximum length of about 1 in in standard length, placing it among the more diminutive of the livebearing toothcarps. The body is comparatively slender for a poeciliid, and the head bears a notably long, pointed snout that occupies between roughly 17 and 29 percent of the head length — a feature used to separate it from its congeners.
The flank carries a row of irregular dark markings that differ subtly between the sexes. Females show six to eight irregular dashes, oval to vertical in shape, while males carry seven to nine dashes that range from oval to more rounded, dot-like spots; in both sexes each dash spans one to two scales in the transverse row. The species lacks a long dark longitudinal band along the flank, and adult males do not develop a large pigmented blotch behind the gonopodium, both of which help distinguish it from related forms.
As in all poeciliids, the most conspicuous sexually dimorphic structure is the male gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin. In C. pirai the gonopodium is described as lacking a distal filament and as bearing a constriction on its unpaired appendix — fine structural details of the kind that, across this family, carry much of the taxonomic weight because the external body form is otherwise so conservative.
Habitat
Cnesterodon pirai is known only from its type locality: the arroyo Almeida, a small affluent of the arroyo Cuña-Pirú, in the río Paraná basin near Aristóbulo del Valle, in the province of Misiones, north-eastern Argentina. The latitude of the locality lies around 27–28° South. Misiones is a subtropical, forested province, and the Cuña-Pirú basin comprises clear, shaded forest streams draining toward the Paraná system.
Despite subsequent collecting effort in the streams of Misiones and within the Cuña-Pirú basin, the species has not been recorded at any other site. This apparent confinement to a single short stretch of one stream marks it as a narrow microendemic — a pattern seen in a number of small Atlantic-forest and upper-Paraná fishes, where steep, fragmented headwater drainages can isolate populations in very small ranges.
FishBase classifies the species as a freshwater, tropical, pelagic fish of these small-stream habitats. Beyond the broad characterisation of its forest-stream setting, detailed measurements of the water it occupies — temperature range, pH, hardness and flow — were not reported in the sources consulted, and the species-specific environmental envelope remains, in effect, data sparse.
Feeding
No species-specific diet study for Cnesterodon pirai was located in the sources consulted, so feeding here must be read from its anatomy and from what is known of the genus. FishBase assigns the species a modelled trophic level of about 3.0 (±0.4), a value estimated from its size and from its relatives rather than from gut-content analysis of C. pirai itself.
That trophic position is consistent with a small omnivore and micro-predator. Cnesterodon species generally take small invertebrates, insect larvae, and items of algal and detrital origin from the water column and substrate of their streams — the broad, opportunistic feeding ecology typical of small poeciliids. The genus name, from the Greek for a scraper, points to a dentition suited to working food from surfaces.
In the absence of direct observation, it is most accurate to describe C. pirai as a presumed small omnivore feeding on micro-invertebrates and plant and detrital matter in its forest-stream habitat, while noting that the specifics of its diet have not been documented.
Mating
Like all members of the family Poeciliidae, Cnesterodon pirai reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium — a slender, mobile intromittent organ built from modified rays of the anal fin. The structure of the gonopodium is one of the principal diagnostic features of the species, which in C. pirai is described as lacking a distal filament and bearing a constriction on its unpaired appendix.
No courtship behaviour has been described for this particular species. In small poeciliids of this kind, males are typically much smaller than females and pursue them more or less continuously, combining brief displays with rapid copulation attempts; female sperm storage, which allows successive broods from a single insemination, is widespread in the family. Whether C. pirai shows these specific patterns has not been documented.
Because no reproductive observations specific to C. pirai are available, statements about its mating must remain at the level of family-wide biology. The internal, gonopodium-mediated fertilisation is secure on anatomical grounds; the finer details of display, mate choice and sperm storage in this species are unrecorded.
Breeding
Cnesterodon pirai is, by family membership, a viviparous livebearer: the female carries developing embryos internally and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. In Cnesterodon, as in most poeciliids, development is lecithotrophic — the embryos are nourished by yolk laid down in the egg, with no placenta-like maternal provisioning of the kind seen in some other livebearing genera. Superfetation, the simultaneous carrying of broods at different stages of development, occurs in parts of the family but has not been reported for Cnesterodon and should not be assumed here.
FishBase carries no reproduction, maturity or fecundity data for C. pirai, and no brood-size figures specific to the species were located. In the genus more broadly, broods are modest: the well-studied Cnesterodon decemmaculatus produces broods on the order of single digits to the low teens. Given the small adult size of C. pirai, comparably small broods are plausible, but no precise figures are asserted here in the absence of a primary source.
As free-swimming, fully formed miniatures at birth, poeciliid fry can feed and swim immediately, and typically need cover from predation — including, in many livebearers, from the adults themselves. Whether these generalities hold in detail for C. pirai is unrecorded; its breeding biology is, in practical terms, data sparse.
In the aquarium
Cnesterodon pirai has no documented presence in the aquarium hobby. It is a wild, single-stream microendemic, and no species-specific care information — tank parameters, feeding regimes, gestation timing, brood sizes or breeding notes — was located in the hobby or livebearer-association literature consulted.
Any husbandry expectations would have to be extrapolated from the genus and from its forest-stream origin: a very small, presumably soft- to moderately-hard-water poeciliid suited to a small, well-planted, gently filtered tank with cover for fry. Such inferences are not a substitute for tested practice, and given the species' conservation status they remain academic rather than practical.
The responsible position is to treat C. pirai as a fish of scientific and conservation interest rather than an aquarium subject. With a Critically Endangered, single-locality wild population, collection for the trade would be inappropriate, and there is no established captive line to draw upon.
Conservation
Cnesterodon pirai is assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, under criteria B2ab(iii), with the assessment dated 28 November 2020 (IUCN taxon ID 176509627). The listing reflects its status as a single-stream microendemic: the species is known only from the arroyo Almeida and has not been found elsewhere despite collecting effort in the surrounding Misiones streams, giving it an extremely restricted area of occupancy and exposing it to threats that could affect its single known habitat.
For a fish confined to one short reach of one forest stream, the principal risks are those that degrade or alter that habitat — changes to water quality, flow, riparian vegetation and surrounding land use within the Cuña-Pirú basin. Any localised disturbance could affect a meaningful fraction of the entire known population, which is precisely the situation the Critically Endangered category is intended to flag.
The species is not listed under CITES or CMS. Its long-term survival is tied to the integrity of its small Misiones catchment; conservation attention to the streams of the Cuña-Pirú basin, and confirmation of whether the species persists or occurs more widely than the single known site, are the obvious priorities. Beyond the 2020 Red List assessment, published information on the species remains scant.
