Cnesterodon decemmaculatus is a tiny, unassuming livebearer of the South American lowlands, named for the row of dark blotches that runs along each flank. Rarely more than four centimetres long, it is one of the most abundant small fishes of the La Plata basin — a hardy, tolerant poeciliid of ditches, ponds and sluggish streams across Argentina, Uruguay and southern Brazil. It is little known in the mainstream aquarium hobby, but it is well known to scientists: its toughness and its willingness to live almost anywhere have made it a standard subject for freshwater ecotoxicology, a small fish that quietly carries a large share of South America's water-quality research.

Taxonomy & naming

Cnesterodon decemmaculatus was first described by the English naturalist Leonard Jenyns in 1842, in the fish volume of the zoology of the voyage of HMS Beagle, working from material collected during that expedition; the species was originally placed in another genus and is therefore cited with Jenyns' name in parentheses. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Cnesterodon decemmaculatus (Jenyns, 1842) as the valid name, placing the species in the genus Cnesterodon within the subfamily Poeciliinae of the family Poeciliidae — the New World livebearers that also include the guppies, mollies and mosquitofishes.

The genus Cnesterodon is a small radiation of diminutive South American poeciliines centred on the temperate and subtropical drainages south of the Amazon, and C. decemmaculatus is by far its most widespread and familiar member. The fish belongs to the order Cyprinodontiformes, the toothcarps, a group characterised by small size, internal fertilisation in the livebearing families, and tolerance of marginal, often harsh waters. The standard regional reference for the species and its relatives is Lucinda's 2003 treatment of the Poeciliidae in the Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America.

Morphology

This is a very small fish. Males reach only about 1.5 in in standard length, while females are distinctly larger, growing to roughly 2 in in total length — a clear sexual size dimorphism in which the female is the bigger sex, as is typical of the smaller poeciliines. The body is fusiform and laterally compressed in the normal toothcarp manner, with a single dorsal fin set well back; FishBase records eight soft rays in the dorsal fin and about ten in the anal fin, with no true spines anywhere in the fins.

The defining feature behind the common name is a row of dark blotches along the side of the body — the species epithet decemmaculatus means "ten-spotted," and these lateral marks give the fish both its scientific and English names. Body colour is otherwise plain and unshowy, an olive-to-silvery ground that blends into the muddy, plant-choked waters the fish favours. As in all livebearing poeciliids, the most reliable way to sex an adult is the anal fin: in the male, several of its rays are fused and elongated into a gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ, while the female retains an ordinary fan-shaped anal fin and, when carrying young, shows a darkened gravid region toward the rear of the abdomen.

Habitat

Cnesterodon decemmaculatus is a fish of the lower La Plata system and the adjacent coastal drainages of south-eastern South America. Its range covers the lower Uruguay River, the Laguna dos Patos system, and the Negro and Salado basins, extending across western Argentine drainages and the small coastal streams of Uruguay and Argentina. Within this region it is one of the most common small fishes, found in ponds, ditches, marshes, lagoons and the slow margins of rivers and streams.

The species is subtropical and notably tolerant of conditions that exclude more delicate fishes. FishBase places it in fresh and slightly brackish, benthopelagic, non-migratory water with a temperature range on the order of 17 to 21 degrees Celsius, reflecting the cooler, more seasonal climate of the temperate south rather than the warm tropics. It favours hard, alkaline water — hardness on the order of 10 to 30 dH — and the fish is celebrated among researchers for surviving low-oxygen, polluted and otherwise degraded waters that would kill most aquarium species. (A pH figure circulating in some databases is a known data-entry error and should be read simply as alkaline, hard water rather than a precise value.)

Feeding

Like most small poeciliids, Cnesterodon decemmaculatus is an opportunistic omnivore and micro-feeder, sitting at a low position in the food web (a trophic level around 3.0). In its native ponds and ditches it grazes on algae, detritus and the film of small organisms on plants and surfaces, and takes small aquatic invertebrates and insect larvae — including mosquito larvae — from the water column and surface. Its broad, flexible diet is part of what lets it thrive across such a wide range of marginal habitats.

In captivity the species would be expected to behave like other small livebearers, accepting fine flake, micro-pellets and small live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, newly hatched brine shrimp and microworm, with a useful share of algal and vegetable matter. Several small feedings suit a fish of this size better than one large meal. Detailed, species-specific aquarium feeding notes are sparse in the cached sources, so the husbandry here is drawn from general poeciliine practice rather than from a dedicated profile of this fish.

Mating

Reproduction in Cnesterodon decemmaculatus is internal, the hallmark of the livebearing poeciliids. Fertilisation occurs inside the female: the male uses his gonopodium — the elongated, fused anal-fin rays — to transfer sperm, swinging the organ forward and to the side to make contact during a brief, distinct pairing. As in related poeciliines, females are able to store viable sperm internally for some time after mating, so a single insemination can fuel more than one brood without a male present.

Detailed accounts of courtship in this particular species are limited in the cached material, but the broad pattern of the group applies: males are small, persistent and non-territorial, pursuing females and attempting insemination rather than defending sites or building anything. The size difference between the sexes — larger females, much smaller males — is the usual poeciliine arrangement that accompanies this mating system, in which female body size sets the capacity for carrying young and male investment is concentrated in the gonopodium and in repeated mating attempts.

Breeding

Cnesterodon decemmaculatus is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. The reproduction of the genus is understood to be lecithotrophic — the embryos are nourished by yolk laid down in the egg before fertilisation, rather than by the elaborate placental matrotrophy seen in some other poeciliid genera such as Heterandria and certain Poeciliopsis. Given the very small adult body size, broods are correspondingly small, on the order of a few to a couple of dozen fry, in line with other tiny poeciliines; exact gestation length and brood counts are not well documented in the cached sources and are not stated here to avoid fabricating figures.

The species has a high reproductive resilience: its population can double in well under fifteen months, reflecting early maturity, repeated breeding through the warm season and the live-bearing strategy that delivers fully formed, immediately mobile fry. The newborns are miniature versions of the adults, able to swim and feed at once, and — as with other livebearers — need cover, since adults will eat fry given the chance. Dense planting and floating vegetation, both abundant in the fish's natural ditch-and-marsh habitat, provide that refuge in the wild and would do the same in an aquarium.

In the aquarium

Cnesterodon decemmaculatus is only occasionally kept, and dedicated specialist care profiles for it are scarce; it appears in the trade mainly as an oddball livebearer of interest to enthusiasts rather than as a staple shop fish. The general approach for a small, hardy poeciliine applies: a modest, well-planted aquarium with floating cover for fry, a gentle sponge filter, and hard, alkaline water matching the fish's natural preference. Unlike most aquarium livebearers, this is a cool-water species — its native range runs into temperate latitudes, and it is comfortable at temperatures well below the tropical norm, broadly in the high teens to low twenties Celsius, which makes it a candidate for an unheated or coolwater setup rather than a warm community tank.

It is a small, peaceful fish best kept in a group and is not suited to boisterous or much larger tankmates. Its great virtue — the trait that has made it a workhorse of South American freshwater ecotoxicology — is its tolerance: it endures hard, alkaline, low-oxygen and even polluted water that would defeat more delicate species. That hardiness makes it forgiving of an imperfect tank, though, as with any livebearer, its readiness to breed means population control becomes the main ongoing task.

Conservation

Cnesterodon decemmaculatus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment dated 9 November 2020. The species is widespread and common across the La Plata basin and the adjacent coastal drainages of Argentina, Uruguay and southern Brazil, occupies a broad range of habitats, and tolerates degraded and disturbed waters; the assessment notes no major threats at the species level.

If anything, the fish's significance to conservation runs in the other direction: its remarkable tolerance of pollution and poor water quality has made it a standard sentinel organism in freshwater ecotoxicology, widely used to test the effects of contaminants on South American waters. A fish that survives where others cannot is, almost by definition, secure in the wild — and at the same time uniquely useful as a living gauge of the health of the very waters it inhabits.
