Cnesterodon brevirostratus is a tiny short-snouted livebearer of the cold highland streams of southern Brazil, a member of the small South American genus Cnesterodon that lives, in evolutionary terms, in the shadow of its famous relative the guppy. Described in 1993 from the upland grasslands of the Araucaria Plateau, it is a fish of first-order brooks, marshes and peat bogs at 750 to 1,250 metres altitude — frequent and abundant where it occurs, yet endemic to a narrow band of the Campos de Cima da Serra in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. It has little aquarium history, but as a poeciliine it shares the family's defining biology: internal fertilisation by way of a male gonopodium, and the birth of fully formed, free-swimming young.

Taxonomy & naming

Cnesterodon brevirostratus was described by Ricardo S. Rosa and Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 1993, in a systematic revision of the genus Cnesterodon published in Copeia. That revision named two new Brazilian species, of which C. brevirostratus is one, and anchored the species on a type series from the upper Rio Uruguai and Rio Jacuí drainages of southern Brazil. The type locality is Arroio Camisa, a tributary of the Rio das Antas in the Parque Nacional de Aparados da Serra, Cambará do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Cnesterodon brevirostratus Rosa & Costa, 1993 as the valid name, placing it in the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae, within the order Cyprinodontiformes.

The genus name Cnesterodon derives from the Greek knester ("scraper"), a reference to the tooth structure of these fishes, combined with odon ("tooth"). The specific epithet brevirostratus is built from the Latin brevis ("short") and rostratus ("snouted" or "beaked"), meaning "short-snouted" — the same character captured in its Portuguese common name, barrigudinho-de-focinho-curto, the "short-snouted little pot-belly." Cnesterodon is a small genus of South American poeciliines centred on the temperate and subtropical waters of southern Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, and is distinct from the genera that include the guppies and mollies, though it belongs to the same New World livebearer radiation.

The several Portuguese names in circulation — barrigudinho, barrigudinho-de-focinho-curto and guaru — are the regional terms applied broadly to small livebearing fishes of southern Brazil, and are not unique to this species. As is common with small, range-restricted poeciliines, the species carries little in the way of an English vernacular name.

Morphology

Cnesterodon brevirostratus is a very small fish. FishBase records a maximum length of about 1.5 in SL for males or unsexed specimens, placing it firmly among the diminutive members of the family. As its name announces, it is distinguished within the genus partly by a short snout, one of the morphological characters Rosa and Costa used to separate it from its congeners in the 1993 revision.

Meristic counts from the original material give 7 to 8 dorsal soft rays, 8 to 9 anal soft rays, and 32 to 34 vertebrae. As in all poeciliine livebearers, the species is expected to show sexual dimorphism: males bear the gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — and are typically smaller and more slender than the deeper-bodied females, which become visibly distended when carrying developing young (the "pot-belly" behind the barrigudinho name). Detailed published notes on live coloration and the finer points of male display structure are sparse for this species.

Beyond these counts and proportions, fine-grained descriptive data are limited in the accessible literature, and the most reliable morphological account remains the original revision of Rosa and Costa (1993). Where specific figures are not available, it is better to defer to that source than to extrapolate from better-known relatives such as the guppy.

Habitat

Cnesterodon brevirostratus is endemic to the highlands of southern Brazil, restricted to Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina in the region known as the Campos de Cima da Serra, on the Araucaria Plateau (Campos do Planalto de Araucárias). It occurs at notably high elevations for a livebearer — roughly 750 to 1,250 metres — in the cool, temperate first-order streams (arroios), ponds and marshes (charcos) and peatlands (turfeiras) that characterise these upland grasslands. The species ranges across the headwaters of the upper Rio Uruguai, the Rio das Antas within the Laguna dos Patos (Rio Jacuí) basin, and the headwaters of the Itajaí-Açu, Mampituba and Tramandaí rivers.

This is a fish of inland freshwater wetlands: permanent small rivers, streams and creeks together with bogs, marshes, swamps, fens and peatlands. The high-altitude, temperate setting distinguishes it sharply from the warm lowland habitats of the tropical livebearers most aquarists know, and means it is adapted to cooler water than the guppies and mollies of the trade. The IUCN describes the species as frequent and abundant within this range.

Several of the waters it inhabits fall within protected areas, including the Parque Nacional de Aparados da Serra (which contains the type locality), the APA Rota do Sol, the APA do Banhado Grande and the Parque Estadual da Serra do Tabuleiro. Its restriction to a defined highland ecoregion makes it a characteristic component of the Araucaria Plateau's freshwater fauna rather than a wide-ranging generalist.

Feeding

Direct feeding data for Cnesterodon brevirostratus are not available; Malabarba and colleagues (2013) report no specific diet information for the species, and FishBase carries no dietary observations. Its estimated trophic level of about 3.0 is consistent with a small omnivore or micro-predator rather than a strict herbivore or piscivore, but this is an estimate rather than a measured diet.

In the absence of species-level study, the most that can be said responsibly is inferential, drawn from the ecology of small poeciliines in general. Fishes of this size and habitat typically feed on small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, algae and organic detritus gleaned from the water column and substrate of slow streams, marshes and peatlands. The genus name itself — "scraper" — points to a dentition suited to rasping at surfaces, hinting at a component of attached algae or biofilm in the diet.

Given the data sparsity, these remain reasonable expectations rather than documented facts. A precise dietary breakdown for this particular species would require targeted gut-content or field study that does not yet appear in the accessible record.

Mating

Like all members of the Poeciliidae subfamily Poeciliinae, Cnesterodon brevirostratus reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male transfers sperm to the female by means of the gonopodium, a modified anal fin whose forward rays are fused and elongated into a mobile rod that is swung forward and inserted briefly during mating. This is the defining reproductive apparatus of the New World livebearers and replaces the external spawning of egg-laying killifishes and characins.

Species-specific courtship behaviour for C. brevirostratus has not been documented in the accessible literature, so the details of display, male competition and female choice are not known for this fish in particular. In poeciliines generally, males pursue females actively and may combine brief courtship with opportunistic copulation attempts, and females of many species can store viable sperm internally, allowing successive broods to be produced from a single insemination. Whether and to what degree these patterns apply to this highland species remains to be confirmed.

Because the genus Cnesterodon has been studied far less than the guppy or the mosquitofishes, it is more accurate to describe its mating biology in terms of the shared poeciliine framework — gonopodial insemination and internal fertilisation — than to assert specific behaviours that have not been observed in this species.

Breeding

Cnesterodon brevirostratus is viviparous: as a poeciliine livebearer it gives birth to live, free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. After internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and delivers fully formed fry, which are independent and able to swim and feed from the moment of birth — the universal reproductive mode of the family that includes the guppies, mollies, platies and swordtails.

Quantitative reproductive details for this species — gestation length, brood size, and whether it shows superfetation (the capacity, present in some poeciliines, to carry several broods at different stages of development simultaneously) — are not reported in the sources at hand. FishBase explicitly notes that reproductive specifics such as gestation and brood size are not given for the species. The species is assessed as having high biological resilience, with an estimated population doubling time of under fifteen months, which implies a productive reproductive output typical of small, fast-maturing livebearers, but this is a population-level inference rather than a measured fecundity.

With the data this sparse, it is better to note the gaps plainly than to import figures from better-studied relatives. What can be stated with confidence is the reproductive mode — internal fertilisation followed by live birth of free-swimming fry — and that the species' high resilience points to rapid maturation and frequent reproduction in its cool highland waters.

In the aquarium

Cnesterodon brevirostratus has essentially no presence in the ornamental aquarium trade and little documented history in hobbyist culture. It is a small, plainly coloured, range-restricted highland fish rather than a bred-up fancy livebearer, and it does not appear in the commercial channels that move guppies, mollies and platies around the world.

The single most important husbandry consideration, were the species kept at all, follows directly from its habitat: it is a cool-water, high-altitude fish, native to temperate upland streams, marshes and peatlands at 750 to 1,250 metres, and is therefore adapted to markedly cooler water than the tropical livebearers most aquarists keep. It should not be assumed to share the warm-water preferences of the guppy. Beyond that, specific captive-care parameters — appropriate tank size, water chemistry tolerances, diet in captivity and compatibility — are not established in the accessible literature for this species.

Given both the data sparsity and the species' role as a wild component of a protected highland ecoregion, the honest position is that this is a fish of scientific and faunistic interest rather than an aquarium subject, and that any keeping recommendation would be speculative.

Conservation

Cnesterodon brevirostratus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (version 3.1, global). The assessment was carried out on 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) and published in 2022. The species is described as frequente e abundante — frequent and abundant — across its range, its population trend is recorded as unknown, and no significant threats were identified at the time of assessment.

A meaningful part of its security is that several of the waters it occupies lie within protected areas, including the Parque Nacional de Aparados da Serra (whose Arroio Camisa is the type locality), the APA Rota do Sol, the APA do Banhado Grande and the Parque Estadual da Serra do Tabuleiro. This network of reserves overlaps usefully with the species' restricted highland distribution on the Araucaria Plateau.

That said, endemism to a narrow band of high-altitude grasslands, streams and peatlands is itself a latent vulnerability: highland wetlands and Campos de Cima da Serra habitats are sensitive to land-use change, drainage and climate shifts, and a species confined to them has limited room to retreat. For now the assessment is reassuring, but the value of continued protection of these upland waters — and of the broader Araucaria Plateau fauna — should not be understated.
