Taxonomy & naming
Cnesterodon raddai was described in 2001 by Meyer and Etzel, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Cnesterodon raddai Meyer & Etzel, 2001 as the valid name, placing the species in the genus Cnesterodon within the family Poeciliidae and the subfamily Poeciliinae — the New World livebearers. FishBase lists the species under SpecCode 61804, following the treatment of Lucinda in the 2003 Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (Reis, Kullander & Ferraris), which remains the standard regional reference for the family.
The genus Cnesterodon is a group of small poeciliine livebearers of southern South America. Its best-known member is Cnesterodon decemmaculatus, a widespread and intensively studied species used as a model in ecotoxicology and reproductive biology; the comparatively obscure C. raddai shares the genus's small size and live-bearing habit but has attracted little dedicated research. The genus name derives from the Greek knester, meaning "scraper," while the specific epithet honours Dr Alfred C. Radda (1936–2022), an Austrian zoologist and professor of virology, according to the Eponym Dictionary of Fishes.
Morphology
Cnesterodon raddai is a very small fish. FishBase records a maximum length of about 1 in SL, based on the Lucinda (2003) checklist treatment, placing it among the smaller poeciliids and consistent with the diminutive size typical of the genus. The body is benthopelagic in habit, occupying the lower and middle water column of small, often vegetated waters.
As in other poeciliines, the species shows the strong sexual dimorphism characteristic of the family: males are markedly smaller than females and bear a gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm internally — while females are larger and deeper-bodied. Detailed species-specific descriptions of colour and meristics for C. raddai are sparse in the readily available literature, so fine morphological characters are best taken from the original description by Meyer and Etzel rather than asserted here; treat this as data sparse.
Habitat
Cnesterodon raddai is native to subtropical fresh waters of South America, in the Paraguay and lower Paraná river basins. The IUCN assessment records it as an extant resident of Argentina — in the provinces of Chaco, Entre Ríos and Santa Fé — and of Paraguay, with a fairly broad range (an extent of occurrence on the order of 67,000–112,0 mi²). It is a freshwater, inland species.
Within these basins the fish inhabits permanent rivers, streams and creeks as well as permanent freshwater lakes, occupying both lotic (flowing) and lentic (still) environments; this habitat note follows Almirón and colleagues' 2015 field guide to the fishes of the Pre-Delta National Park (Guía de peces del Parque Nacional Pre-Delta). The species occurs in at least one protected area in that region. As a subtropical lowland livebearer of slow, vegetated and marginal waters, it can be expected to tolerate warm conditions and the seasonal variability of such floodplain habitats, though precise field measurements of temperature and chemistry are not documented for the species.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary study for Cnesterodon raddai is available in the consulted sources. FishBase places the species at a trophic level of roughly 3.0, which together with its small size and the habits of related poeciliines indicates a micro-omnivore that grazes on algae, detritus and small invertebrates rather than a specialised predator.
Like other small livebearers of vegetated lowland waters, C. raddai most plausibly feeds opportunistically on biofilm and algal growth, tiny crustaceans and insect larvae taken from plants, substrate and the water column. In the absence of a dedicated gut-content or feeding study, finer dietary detail should be regarded as data sparse and inferred from genus-level habit rather than asserted for this species.
Mating
Cnesterodon raddai is a poeciliine livebearer and reproduces by internal fertilisation. Males possess a gonopodium, the modified anal fin that serves as an intromittent organ, and use it to transfer sperm to the female; as in the genus generally, males are considerably smaller than females, an expression of the strong sexual size dimorphism typical of the small Poeciliinae.
No courtship behaviour has been described specifically for C. raddai. In small poeciliines of this kind, mating is generally continuous rather than seasonal in warm conditions, with males pursuing females and females able to store viable sperm internally, allowing successive broods from a single insemination. These patterns are drawn from the reproductive biology of the subfamily and the better-studied congener Cnesterodon decemmaculatus; species-specific mating data for C. raddai are not available and should be treated as data sparse.
Breeding
As a member of the Poeciliinae, Cnesterodon raddai is viviparous and lecithotrophic: the developing young are nourished by yolk (no true placenta) and the female gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. This live-bearing strategy is shared across the genus and underlies the high resilience noted for the species in FishBase, where the estimated minimum population doubling time is under fifteen months.
Species-specific figures for gestation length, brood size and the presence or absence of superfetation have not been located for C. raddai. In the closely related and better-studied Cnesterodon decemmaculatus, broods are small — on the order of a few up to roughly twenty-odd fry — and superfetation (carrying overlapping broods at different stages of development) occurs in various small poeciliines, but whether it applies to C. raddai is undocumented. These reproductive specifics should therefore be treated as data sparse and not assigned precise values for this species.
In the aquarium
Cnesterodon raddai is documented as entering the aquarium trade, both nationally and internationally, according to the IUCN assessment, but it is a specialist's fish rather than a common shop livebearer and there is little published husbandry guidance specific to it. It is occasionally kept by livebearer enthusiasts who maintain the smaller, less ornamental poeciliines.
Husbandry recommendations therefore have to be inferred from its origins as a small, subtropical lowland livebearer of vegetated, often still waters: a planted aquarium with gentle filtration, warm to moderately warm temperatures, and small foods suited to a fish that matures at little more than two centimetres. Because precise water-chemistry and temperature requirements are not documented for the species, an aquarist should approach it conservatively, replicating stable, clean, well-planted conditions rather than relying on numbers that are not established. As with all livebearers, specimens should never be released into local waters.
Conservation
Cnesterodon raddai is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (version 3.1, global), assessed on 31 July 2023 and published in 2023 under assessment ID e.T176509993A176510053. The justification notes that the species occupies a relatively small area of suitable habitat and faces ongoing threats but does not meet the thresholds for a threatened category; it also occurs in at least one protected area, supporting a tentative Least Concern listing, while the assessors flag that more research on its population, threats and distribution is needed. The population trend is recorded as unknown.
The threats identified are characteristic of an agriculturally important region: land-use change, urbanisation, road construction and irrigation dams in landscapes given over to cattle and to crops such as rice, soybean and cotton. The species is also used in the aquarium trade. Its taxonomic basis in the assessment follows Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Van der Laan 2020), and its occurrence within the Pre-Delta National Park region affords it some measure of habitat protection.
