Cnesterodon septentrionalis is a tiny live-bearing toothcarp known only from the headwaters of the Rio Araguaia in central Brazil — the northernmost outpost of an otherwise southern-South-American genus, and the reference behind its name, "the northern one." Described in 1993 from a single restricted drainage in Mato Grosso, it is a barely three-centimetre poeciliid of swamps and clear shallow streams, internally fertilising and live-bearing like its better-known relatives the guppy and mosquitofish, but with a wild range so small that the IUCN lists it as Near Threatened. It is a fish of the scientific literature rather than the aquarium: almost everything recorded about it comes from its original description and a handful of regional surveys.

Taxonomy & naming

Cnesterodon septentrionalis was described by Ricardo S. Rosa and Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 1993, as part of a systematic revision of the genus Cnesterodon published in Copeia, the same paper that erected two new species and re-ordered the group. The type material comes from the upper Rio Araguaia drainage in the municipality of Alto Araguaia, state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Cnesterodon septentrionalis Rosa & Costa, 1993 as the valid name, placing the species in the genus Cnesterodon within the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae — the New World livebearers.

The genus Cnesterodon is a small assemblage of diminutive live-bearing toothcarps centred on the Rio de la Plata system and the temperate freshwaters of Argentina, Uruguay and southern Brazil; its type species is the widespread Cnesterodon decemmaculatus. Against that southern backdrop, C. septentrionalis is the geographic outlier — its specific epithet, from the Latin septentrionalis, means "northern" and marks it as the northernmost known member of the genus, isolated far up in the central-Brazilian Araguaia headwaters away from the rest of its relatives.

The generic name Cnesterodon derives from the Greek knester, a scraper or rasp, in reference to the structure of the teeth — a feature of the jaw dentition that distinguishes the genus among the poeciliids. As with all members of the family, males bear an anal fin modified into a gonopodium, the intromittent organ that defines the New World livebearers and on which much of poeciliid taxonomy rests.

Morphology

Cnesterodon septentrionalis is a very small fish: FishBase records a maximum length of about 1 in SL, placing it among the smallest of the livebearers and broadly in line with the diminutive scale of the genus as a whole. The body is the compact, slightly elongate form typical of small poeciliines, built for life in shallow, vegetated water rather than open swimming. Detailed colour and pattern data for the species are sparse in the accessible literature; the diagnostic characters that separate it from its congeners were drawn by Rosa and Costa from meristics, dentition and the structure of the male gonopodium rather than from colour.

Recorded meristics are modest and consistent with the genus: roughly seven dorsal soft rays and eight to nine anal soft rays. In males the anal fin is transformed into the gonopodium, a slender, forward-set intromittent organ formed from elongated and specialised anal-fin rays — the single most important structural feature in poeciliid systematics, and the basis on which species in this genus are most reliably told apart.

Beyond size, ray counts and the male's modified anal fin, published morphological detail for C. septentrionalis is limited. In keeping with the site's no-guessing rule, finer points of coloration, sexual colour differences and soft-tissue anatomy are best treated as data-sparse pending consultation of the full original description (Rosa & Costa, 1993, Copeia).

Habitat

The species is endemic to the upper Rio Araguaia basin in central Brazil, in and around the municipality of Alto Araguaia, Mato Grosso. Its entire documented range is extremely small — the IUCN estimates an extent of occurrence of only about 300 square kilometres, one of the more restricted distributions among South American livebearers. FishBase characterises it as a freshwater, benthopelagic species of tropical waters; the IUCN habitat classification places it in inland wetlands, specifically permanent rivers, streams and creeks.

The common name "swamp toothcarp" reflects the kind of water the genus favours: shallow, slow or still, often densely vegetated marginal habitats, the swamps, ditches and creek edges where small poeciliids shelter among plants and graze the surface film. Such micro-habitats suit a fish of this size, offering both cover from larger predators and a steady supply of small food items, and they are characteristic of the headwater reaches of the Araguaia where the species was collected.

Because the species is known from so confined an area, its population is regarded by the IUCN as severely fragmented, and very little is recorded about its abundance, seasonal movements, or the precise water chemistry of its native streams. Site-specific temperature, pH and hardness figures are not available in the cached sources and are treated here as data-sparse rather than estimated.

Feeding

No diet study specific to Cnesterodon septentrionalis appears in the accessible sources, so its feeding ecology is inferred from its body plan, its small-water habitat and the well-documented habits of its close relatives. Small Cnesterodon and related poeciliids of vegetated swamp and stream margins are typically opportunistic micro-omnivores, taking algae, diatoms and detritus together with small aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans and insect larvae — including, as in many livebearers, mosquito larvae drawn from the surface and water column. A fish of roughly three centimetres feeding among dense plants would be expected to graze more or less continuously on whatever small items the habitat provides, with the balance of plant to animal matter shifting with season and local availability.

In the absence of published gut-content or stable-isotope work on this species, the above should be read as the general pattern for the genus and habitat rather than a documented account of C. septentrionalis specifically. The honest summary is that its diet is plausibly that of a small swamp-dwelling omnivorous toothcarp, but the species-level detail is sparse.

Mating

Like all members of the family Poeciliidae, Cnesterodon septentrionalis reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male's anal fin is modified into a gonopodium — a mobile, rod-like organ built from specialised anal-fin rays — which is used to transfer sperm directly to the female. This is the defining reproductive feature of the New World livebearers and replaces the external egg-scattering of most small freshwater fishes.

In small poeciliids of this kind, mating is generally frequent and not tied to nest-building or territory; males pursue females and attempt insemination using the gonopodium, and in many genera females are able to store sperm internally and produce successive broods from a single mating. Whether C. septentrionalis shows the full range of poeciliid mating behaviours — courtship display versus coercive "sneak" mating, and the degree of sperm storage — has not been documented in the cached sources and is treated here as data-sparse.

What can be stated with confidence is the mode: this is an internally fertilising, live-bearing fish in which the gonopodium is the organ of sperm transfer. In the aquarium

Cnesterodon septentrionalis is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It is a narrow-range Brazilian endemic known almost entirely from scientific collections; it is not part of the ornamental livebearer trade, and there is no body of hobbyist husbandry experience to draw on. Anyone encountering it would do so in the context of field survey or research rather than the shop or the home tank.

Were it ever maintained — as occasionally happens with small wild Cnesterodon in specialist or institutional settings — it would call for the conditions its habitat implies: a small, densely planted tank with gentle filtration, warm tropical water, abundant cover at the margins, and a varied diet of fine prepared and small live foods suited to a roughly three-centimetre omnivore. Its native water chemistry is not documented in the cached sources, so specific temperature, pH and hardness targets cannot be given with confidence.

The more important point is conservation, not keeping. Given its very small range, severely fragmented population and Near Threatened status, this is a species better served by habitat protection and study than by collection for the hobby. Conservation

Cnesterodon septentrionalis is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, under criterion B1b(iii). The basis for the listing is the species' very restricted distribution: an extent of occurrence estimated at only about 300 square kilometres in the upper Araguaia basin around Alto Araguaia, Mato Grosso, together with a population regarded as severely fragmented.

The IUCN records the population trend as unknown and notes that no abundance data are available, while the principal concern reflected in the B1b(iii) criterion is a continuing decline in the quality of the species' wetland habitat within that small range. The species is also listed in Brazil's national Livro Vermelho da Fauna Brasileira Ameaçada de Extinção (ICMBio, 2018), underscoring national-level recognition of its restricted status. No species-specific conservation actions were noted as being in place at the time of assessment.

For a fish confined to a single headwater drainage, the conservation arithmetic is straightforward: a species with so small a footprint is vulnerable to localised threats — habitat alteration, drainage and degradation of its swamp and stream margins — that would scarcely register for a widespread species. Protection of the upper Araguaia wetlands and basic survey work to establish its population status are the obvious priorities, and the responsible stance toward C. septentrionalis is to leave its few populations undisturbed.
