Taxonomy & naming
Dermogenys robertsi was described by Angela D. Meisner in 2001 as part of a broad phylogenetic revision of the viviparous halfbeak genera Dermogenys and Nomorhamphus ("Phylogenetic systematics of the viviparous halfbeak genera Dermogenys and Nomorhamphus," Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society 133(2): 199–283). The species was one of several new Dermogenys erected in that study, which sorted out a long-confused group of small Southeast Asian beaked fishes. Type material came from two widely separated areas — Busuanga and Culion islands in the Palawan region of the Philippines, and Kalimantan Timur (East Kalimantan) on Borneo, Indonesia.
The species epithet honours Tyson R. Roberts, the American ichthyologist and specialist in Southeast Asian freshwater fishes, who supplied specimens from his private collection for Meisner's revision. The genus name Dermogenys derives from the Greek derma, "skin," and geny, "jaw" or "face," a reference to the soft, fleshy beak that characterises these halfbeaks.
Classification of the live-bearing halfbeaks has shifted over time. Older literature placed Dermogenys within the family Hemiramphidae (subfamily Zenarchopterinae), the arrangement used in Meisner's original description. Current usage, followed by FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes, raises the internally fertilising halfbeaks to their own family, the Zenarchopteridae, within the order Beloniformes — the same order that holds the needlefishes and flyingfishes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name.
Morphology
Dermogenys robertsi is a small fish built on the typical halfbeak plan: a slender, pike-like body with the dorsal and anal fins set far back near the tail, and a strongly elongated lower jaw — the "half beak" — projecting forward while the upper jaw stays short. This beak is the defining feature of the genus and is used to skim small prey from the water's surface. Coloration is not well documented for this species; FishBase carries only a line drawing rather than a photograph, so detailed live colour is not on record.
The species shows marked sexual size dimorphism, a pattern usual among the viviparous halfbeaks. According to FishBase, males reach about 1.5 in standard length while females grow noticeably larger, to roughly 2 in SL — the larger female body accommodating the developing brood, as in other live-bearing fishes. Beyond size, the most reliable sex difference in Dermogenys is the structure of the modified anal fin in males, which forms the intromittent organ used in internal fertilisation.
Because the species is so rarely encountered and has not been the subject of detailed descriptive imaging beyond the original revision, finer points of meristics and pigmentation are best left to Meisner's 2001 account; for the purposes of this profile the data are sparse.
Habitat
Dermogenys robertsi is a freshwater fish of tropical Southeast Asia. The IUCN describes its system as inland fresh waters — permanent rivers, streams and creeks — and FishBase characterises it as a freshwater, pelagic, tropical species. Like other halfbeaks, it is a surface-oriented fish, hanging just below the water film where its upturned mouth and long lower jaw let it intercept small drifting prey.
The geography of the species is genuinely unresolved, and this uncertainty is the central reason for its Data Deficient listing. Type specimens came from both the Philippines (Busuanga and Culion islands, in the Palawan region) and Indonesia (Kalimantan Timur, on Borneo). Collette's later work (2004) reported only the Philippine distribution, leaving open whether the Bornean record represents the same species or a misidentification. FishBase summarises the range simply as "Asia: the Philippines and Indonesia," reflecting that unsettled picture.
What is consistent is the broad habitat type — warm, lowland to upland flowing fresh waters of the Sundaic and Philippine region. Without published in-situ measurements for this species, specific temperature, pH and hardness figures cannot be stated with confidence and are not asserted here.
Feeding
No diet study exists specifically for Dermogenys robertsi, so its feeding ecology is inferred from the genus. Live-bearing halfbeaks of the genus Dermogenys are surface insectivores and micro-predators. The elongated lower jaw acts as a guide for snapping up small animals at or just beneath the surface — primarily aquatic and terrestrial insects and their larvae, small crustaceans, and other tiny invertebrates that fall onto or drift along the water film. FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 3.1, consistent with a small carnivore feeding mainly on invertebrate prey.
This surface-feeding habit reflects the fish's body design. With its mouth and beak oriented forward and slightly upward, and its fins set back for a quick darting strike, Dermogenys is adapted to patrol the top few centimetres of the water column rather than to forage on the bottom or among plants.
Because no aquarium or field feeding records exist for D. robertsi in particular, any account of its diet should be read at the genus level; the species-specific data are sparse.
Mating
Like all members of the family Zenarchopteridae, Dermogenys robertsi reproduces by internal fertilisation — a trait the live-bearing halfbeaks evolved independently of the New World poeciliids such as guppies and mollies. In the poeciliids the male's intromittent organ is the gonopodium, a modified anal fin; in the zenarchopterid halfbeaks an analogous structure, the andropodium, is likewise formed from modified anal-fin rays and is used to transfer sperm to the female. The marked size difference between the small male and the larger female of D. robertsi fits this internally fertilising, live-bearing reproductive mode.
The broader biology of mating in Dermogenys robertsi has not been observed and reported in detail, so the specifics of courtship, sperm transfer behaviour and any male–male interaction are not documented for this species. In several congeners — most famously the wrestling halfbeak, Dermogenys pusilla — males spar jaw-to-jaw, which is where the common name "wrestling halfbeak" comes from, but it would be guesswork to assert that behaviour for robertsi, and it is not claimed here.
What is established is the reproductive framework: this is an internally fertilising, viviparous halfbeak, and that places its mating squarely within the live-bearer pattern of sperm transfer to the female followed by internal development of the young.
Breeding
Dermogenys robertsi is viviparous: the female carries and nourishes developing young internally and gives birth to live, free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. The IUCN assessment specifically notes two further reproductive specialisations for this species. First, it is superfetatious — the female can carry several broods at different stages of development in the ovary at the same time, so that successive batches of young mature and are born in overlapping sequence rather than all at once. Second, it is matrotrophic, meaning the mother provides substantial nourishment to the embryos after fertilisation rather than the young developing solely on a pre-packaged yolk supply.
These traits — superfetation and matrotrophy — are highlighted in the comparative study by Reznick, Meredith & Collette (2007, Evolution 61(11): 2570–2583), which examined the independent evolution of live-bearing in the Zenarchopteridae alongside the poeciliids. They make the live-bearing halfbeaks a notable parallel to the better-known New World livebearers, and they are part of why this otherwise obscure fish is biologically interesting.
Quantitative breeding data — brood size, gestation length, and birth size — are not on record for D. robertsi specifically. Given how poorly the species is known in life, those figures are left unstated rather than guessed; the reproductive mode is documented, but the numbers are sparse.
In the aquarium
Dermogenys robertsi is, for practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. No reliable species-specific care literature exists for it, and it is rarely if ever offered in the trade. The familiar "halfbeak" of the hobby is a different species — the wrestling halfbeak, Dermogenys pusilla — and care notes written for that fish should not be transferred to robertsi as if they were measured facts.
What little can be said is generic to the genus. Dermogenys are small, surface-dwelling top-feeders with delicate, easily damaged jaws; in captivity their relatives are kept in calm, well-covered, planted aquaria with gentle flow at the surface, fed on fine floating foods and small live insect prey, and are known to be jumpers and to be skittish, sometimes injuring their beaks against tank walls or lids. These are general husbandry expectations for live-bearing halfbeaks, not documented requirements for D. robertsi.
Anyone encountering this species should treat exact tank parameters as unknown rather than relying on figures borrowed from the wrestling halfbeak. The honest summary is that this is a wild, little-collected fish whose aquarium needs have not been established.
Conservation
Dermogenys robertsi is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (Torres, Leander & Kesner-Reyes 2021; assessed 10 August 2020, version 3.1; e.T90986178A90986182). The Data Deficient category was applied chiefly because of uncertainty about the species' distribution: it is unclear whether the fish occurs only in the Philippines — on Busuanga and Culion islands in the Palawan region — or whether it also genuinely occurs in Kalimantan Timur on Borneo, as the original type series suggested. Without resolving that question, the assessors could not judge its true range, population size or trend, and the population trend is recorded as unknown.
The assessment does note threats to the Philippine population: introduced exotic fishes, habitat destruction from mining and quarrying, deforestation, and the construction of dams for irrigation and water supply. Threats to any Indonesian population are simply unknown. No conservation measures are in place for the species, and it is not listed under CITES.
For a fish this poorly understood, the conservation priority is basic: clarifying its taxonomy and confirming where it actually lives. Until that is done, its status — and the severity of the pressures on its small island and river habitats — cannot be assessed with confidence.
