Dermogenys sumatrana is one of the live-bearing halfbeaks of Sundaland — a slender, surface-skimming little fish from the freshwaters and mangrove fringes of Sumatra, Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia and Thailand. Like the rest of its family, the Zenarchopteridae, it carries an elongated, beak-like lower jaw and, unusually for a beloniform, fertilises its eggs internally and gives birth to live young. Males spar by locking those long jaws together, a behaviour that earned the genus its hobby name, the 'wrestling halfbeaks,' and which has made them objects of betting fights in parts of their native range.

Taxonomy & naming

Dermogenys sumatrana was first described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1854 as Hemiramphus sumatranus, from Sumatran material, and was later moved to the genus Dermogenys. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Dermogenys sumatrana (Bleeker, 1854) as the valid name, placing the species in the family Zenarchopteridae — the internally fertilised halfbeaks — within the order Beloniformes, the needlefishes, halfbeaks and their relatives. The genus name Dermogenys derives from the Greek derma (skin) and geny/genys (jaw or face), referring to the fleshy, skin-covered region of the distinctive elongated jaw.

The taxonomy of the genus carries an important pitfall for anyone tracing old records. The genus was revised by Meisner in 2001, and before that revision D. sumatrana and several other species were widely synonymised under Dermogenys pusilla. As a result, many museum specimens and older — and even some newer — distribution records appear as Dermogenys pusilla or as the subspecies D. pusillus borneensis, and require confirmation before being assigned to D. sumatrana. The taxonomic framework followed here is that of Kottelat (2013, Raffles Bulletin of Zoology, Supplement 27).

Morphology

Dermogenys sumatrana is a small fish, reaching a maximum of about 3 in total length (Kottelat et al. 1993). Its defining feature, shared across the halfbeaks, is the greatly elongated lower jaw — a slender, fixed 'beak' that projects well beyond the short, mobile upper jaw. The body is elongate, slim and laterally compressed, built for life at the very surface of the water, where the dorsally set mouth and upturned profile let the fish pick prey from the surface film.

The species is sexually dimorphic. As in other Dermogenys, the male's anal fin is modified into an andropodium — the intromittent organ of these livebearers, functionally analogous to the gonopodium of the New World poeciliids though evolved entirely independently. Males tend to be the smaller sex and, by analogy with their close congeners, may carry coloured markings such as a red patch on the dorsal fin, while females are larger and plainer. Precise pigmentation details for D. sumatrana specifically are data sparse; the elongated lower jaw and the male andropodium are the reliable diagnostic features at the genus level.

Habitat

Dermogenys sumatrana ranges across Sundaland: Indonesia (Sumatra and Kalimantan/Borneo), Malaysia (Peninsular Malaysia including Pulau Langkawi, and Sarawak), and Thailand. It has been recorded from a wide spread of localities — Lake Maninjau in Sumatra, the Kuching and Igan areas of Sarawak, Kebuk Karak and Ogan in Sumatra, and Selidung Lama Gabak on Bangka Island — and is reported to be abundant in stream sampling in Sumatra (Pulungan 2010; Suhendra et al. 2016).

The species is a surface-dwelling, pelagic fish that occupies both fresh and brackish habitats. The IUCN assessment lists it from freshwater lakes (including larger lakes over 8 ha), permanent rivers and streams, freshwater marshes and pools, and mangrove systems, where it is found in the marine intertidal zone among submerged mangrove roots. FishBase records a tropical temperature range of roughly 79–86 °F and notes alkaline, moderately hard water (pH around 7.0 and upward, with a hardness around 15 dH). This breadth of habitat — from inland lakes to tidal mangrove — reflects the genus's general tolerance of light brackish conditions.

Feeding

As an obligate surface feeder, Dermogenys sumatrana takes its food from the very top of the water column. The upturned mouth and elongated lower jaw are adapted for snapping up small prey at the surface film — chiefly insects that fall onto the water, along with other small invertebrates and zooplankton. FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 3.1, consistent with a micro-predatory, largely carnivorous diet.

In captivity the surface-feeding habit governs everything about how these fish are fed. Halfbeaks relish small live foods presented at the surface — gut-loaded fruit flies (Drosophila) are a standout, alongside brine shrimp and bloodworm — and they often refuse dry foods, at least initially. Because they feed exclusively from the top, floating foods and surface-drifting live prey are essential; sinking pellets are simply ignored. A varied, high-quality diet is more than a matter of colour and condition here, as nutrition is directly tied to successful breeding in the genus.

Mating

The Zenarchopteridae are remarkable among the beloniforms for having evolved internal fertilisation and live-bearing independently of the New World poeciliids — a striking case of convergent evolution documented by Reznick, Meredith and Collette (2007). In Dermogenys, fertilisation is internal: the male uses his andropodium, a modified anal fin, to transfer sperm to the female, just as a poeciliid male uses his gonopodium, though the two structures arose from separate evolutionary lineages.

Courtship in the genus is bound up with the males' signature behaviour. Dermogenys males are pugnacious toward one another and spar by locking their elongated jaws together and wrestling — the source of the hobby name 'wrestling halfbeak' and, in some native countries, of organised betting fights staged between males. In the aquarium this aggression is managed by keeping either a single male or a larger group, so that no one fish bears the brunt of the sparring; a peaceful but skittish temperament otherwise prevails.

Breeding

Dermogenys sumatrana is viviparous, giving birth to fully formed live young rather than laying eggs; live-bearing in this species was documented by Pulungan (2010). After internal fertilisation the female carries the developing brood through a gestation that, in the genus, is temperature-dependent and runs on the order of three to six weeks. Brood sizes in Dermogenys are modest by livebearer standards, typically around ten to twenty fry. The newborns are comparatively large and able to take powdered dry foods and newly hatched Artemia from birth.

Halfbeaks are widely regarded as harder to breed than the easygoing poeciliids. A recurring problem in the genus is females dropping stillborn fry, a failure that hobbyist and aquarium literature link to nutritional deficiency — some authors specifically implicate vitamin D — which is why a rich, varied diet of live foods is considered essential conditioning for breeding stock. As with most livebearers, adults will predate the fry, so newborns should be given dense cover or separated to be raised. (These husbandry details derive largely from the closely related, better-documented congener Dermogenys pusilla, used here as a genus-level proxy.)

In the aquarium

Dermogenys halfbeaks are surface specialists, and that single fact shapes their care. Surface area matters far more than tank depth, and a tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable: these are flighty, accomplished jumpers that will leap from an open tank. Floating plants and dense marginal planting serve double duty — they calm the fish, give the fry cover, and help protect the delicate, elongated mouthparts, which can be damaged by collisions in a bare or cramped tank.

Water chemistry should follow the species' tolerance of hard, alkaline conditions; the genus does well in hard, alkaline freshwater and tolerates light brackish water (specific gravity up to about 1.005). The proxy congener D. pusilla is kept at roughly 75–82 °F, pH 6.5–8.0 and 10–20 dH, which brackets the conditions reported for D. sumatrana. These fish are sensitive to poor water quality and to sudden swings in temperature or chemistry, so small, frequent water changes suit them better than large, infrequent ones. They are peaceful but skittish toward tankmates, pairing well with other livebearers, small rainbowfishes, freshwater or brackish gobies and glassfishes — but multiple males must be managed to spread out their jaw-locking sparring.

Conservation

Dermogenys sumatrana is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (Daniels 2020; assessment e.T90986192A90986206, last assessed 10 January 2020). It is a widespread species across Sundaland, recorded from a broad range of freshwater and mangrove habitats and reported as abundant in some Sumatran stream surveys, and it occurs in at least one protected area, with its range likely overlapping Ramsar sites such as Berbak National Park and Kuching Wetlands National Park.

The assessment nonetheless catalogues real, localised pressures on the species' habitats. Dams and water-management schemes, the spread of oil-palm and wood-pulp plantations, deforestation and logging, and tin mining and quarrying all degrade its waters — the last especially on Bangka Island, where mining brings pollution, turbidity, low dissolved oxygen and acidic (low-pH) run-off. Agricultural and forestry effluents add to the burden. None of these currently threatens the species as a whole, but they bear watching where halfbeak habitat overlaps the rapidly expanding plantation and mining frontiers of Sumatra and Borneo.
