Gambusia luma was described by Donn Eric Rosen and Reeve Maclaren Bailey in 1963, in their monographic revision of the poeciliid fishes — a work that reorganised much of the systematics of the New World livebearers and erected or redefined many of the genera still in use. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Gambusia luma Rosen & Bailey, 1963 as the valid name, placing the species in the genus Gambusia within the subfamily Poeciliinae of the family Poeciliidae, order Cyprinodontiformes. FishBase records the species under SpecCode 46641 with the English common name "sleek mosquitofish."
Gambusia is one of the larger poeciliid genera, a cluster of small, internally fertilising mosquitofishes spread across the southern United States, Mexico, Central America and the Greater Antilles. The genus is taxonomically dense and has been repeatedly subdivided into species groups on the basis of fine gonopodial and pigment characters, the features Rosen and Bailey leaned on when they separated luma from its congeners. The name of the genus itself comes from the Cuban Spanish word gambusino, used in the idiom "fishing for gambusinos" — that is, fishing for nothing, catching nothing — a wry reference to the small size and slight commercial value of these fishes. The specific epithet luma is a short, distinctive name with no widely documented etymology in the standard references, and is best treated here as data sparse rather than guessed at.
Morphology
Gambusia luma is a small fish, with a maximum recorded length of about 1.5 in standard length in males or unsexed specimens and roughly 1.5 in in females, according to FishBase. As in mosquitofishes generally, the body is slender and somewhat compressed toward the tail, the head is flattened above with a superior, upturned mouth suited to taking food from the surface film, and the single dorsal fin sits well back on the body. The common name "sleek" captures the impression of a smooth, streamlined little fish without the deepened body of some of its relatives.
The species shows the sexual dimorphism characteristic of the family. Males are the smaller sex and bear the gonopodium — a slender, rod-like intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin, used to deliver sperm to the female. Females are somewhat larger and deeper-bodied, lacking the modified anal fin and, when carrying young, showing the swollen abdomen typical of gravid livebearers. Detailed published colour and meristic descriptions for G. luma are sparse in the general references; the diagnostic characters that separate it from other Central American Gambusia lie chiefly in the structure of the gonopodium and fine pigment patterning treated in the original 1963 revision.
Habitat
Gambusia luma is native to the lowlands of Central America, with FishBase recording its distribution from Belize, Guatemala and Honduras. It is a freshwater and brackish-water fish, classified as benthopelagic, and inhabits the warm coastal and lowland waters of this region. The recorded thermal range is tropical and narrow — around 79–82 °F — with reported water chemistry of pH 7.2 to 7.8 and moderate to fairly hard water in the range of 10 to 25 dH, consistent with the calcareous lowland drainages of the Yucatán margin and the Caribbean slope.
One behavioural note distinguishes it from the stereotype of a surface-hugging mosquitofish: FishBase records that the species "occurs occasionally in deeper waters," suggesting it is not confined to the shallow margins and weedy edges where many Gambusia concentrate. Its tolerance of brackish conditions points to a fish at home in the transitional waters near the coast — river mouths, coastal lagoons and the lower reaches of streams where fresh water meets the sea. Beyond these broad strokes the published habitat detail is limited, and the finer points of its preferred microhabitats are best treated as data sparse.
Feeding
Like other mosquitofishes, Gambusia luma is a small omnivorous micro-predator. FishBase places it at a modelled trophic level of about 3.2, the level expected of a fish that takes a mixed diet weighted toward small animal prey. The genus as a whole is best known for surface and near-surface feeding on insect larvae — including the mosquito larvae that give the group its English name — together with small crustaceans, other aquatic invertebrates, drifting items at the water surface, and a share of algae and detritus. The upturned mouth and flattened head are the equipment of a fish that works the top of the water column.
No diet study specific to G. luma is recorded in the general references, so the particulars of what it eats in the wild are inferred from its trophic level and from the well-documented feeding ecology of its close relatives rather than from direct observation of this species. In an aquarium setting a fish of this type would be expected to accept small flake and micro-pellets readily and to relish small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, newly hatched brine shrimp and finely chopped bloodworm, but the species is rarely kept and husbandry-specific feeding notes are correspondingly thin.
Mating
Gambusia luma reproduces by internal fertilisation, the defining reproductive strategy of the Poeciliidae. The male does not scatter milt over eggs; instead he transfers sperm directly to the female using the gonopodium, the modified anal fin that serves as an intromittent organ. In mosquitofishes this is typically a swift, coercive process: males of the genus are noted for persistent pursuit and sneak mating rather than the elaborate courtship displays seen in some other livebearers, approaching females repeatedly to attempt insemination.
As in poeciliids generally, females are able to store viable sperm internally and can produce successive broods from a single mating, decoupling each birth from a fresh encounter with a male. Specific behavioural studies of mate choice and courtship in G. luma itself are not available in the standard references, so the account here rests on the shared reproductive biology of the genus rather than on observations of this particular species — a point worth flagging given how variable mating tactics can be even among closely related Gambusia.
Breeding
Gambusia luma is viviparous: the female carries the developing embryos internally and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. FishBase records a gestation period of about 24 days and a brood of roughly 10 to 20 young, modest figures typical of a small mosquitofish. The newborn fry emerge fully formed and able to swim and feed immediately, a head start that, combined with internal fertilisation and stored sperm, lets livebearers build up populations quickly under favourable conditions; the species is rated as having high resilience, with a minimum population doubling time estimated at under fifteen months.
Whether G. luma practises superfetation — the poeciliid trait of carrying several broods at different developmental stages simultaneously, well documented in a number of Gambusia and related genera — is not established in the general references for this species, and is left here as data sparse rather than assumed. As with other mosquitofishes, no parental care follows birth; the fry are independent at once, and in the confines of an aquarium the adults, including the mother, would be expected to predate their own young unless cover or separation is provided.
In the aquarium
Gambusia luma is essentially an unkept species. It is of no fisheries interest, harmless to humans, and rare in the aquarium hobby; there is no established body of husbandry experience to draw on, and the practical notes that follow are extrapolated from its recorded environmental tolerances and from keeping its better-known congeners rather than from documented success with this fish. Anyone encountering it would most likely do so through scientific collection or a specialist livebearer enthusiast rather than the trade.
If maintained, it would call for the conditions implied by its native range: warm water in the 79–82 °F band, neutral to mildly alkaline chemistry around pH 7.2 to 7.8, and moderately hard to hard water of roughly 10 to 25 dH, with the option of a little added salt given the species' brackish tolerance. Like other Gambusia it is small and live-bearing but can be nippy and persistent, so it is better suited to a species-focused or robust-livebearer setup than to a delicate community. Its rarity, however, means the responsible course is to treat any specimens as material of scientific and conservation interest rather than ordinary aquarium stock.
Conservation
Gambusia luma is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessment dated 17 October 2019, IUCN species ID 164691419). The species is not evaluated under CITES or the Convention on Migratory Species, and FishBase rates its fishing vulnerability as very low. As a widespread small fish across the lowlands of Belize, Guatemala and Honduras, with no targeted exploitation and a high reproductive resilience, it does not at present meet the criteria for a threatened category.
That said, the lowland and coastal waters of northern Central America face the familiar pressures of habitat alteration, pollution, water abstraction and the spread of introduced species, and small endemic livebearers can be sensitive to local habitat loss even where the species as a whole is secure. Detailed population data for G. luma are limited, and continued monitoring is the prudent stance for a fish whose conservation status rests on a broad distribution rather than on close demographic study.
