Taxonomy & naming
Goodea atripinnis was described by the American ichthyologist David Starr Jordan in 1880, in the Proceedings of the United States National Museum. The genus name honours Dr George Brown Goode (1851–1896), Jordan's contemporary, an American ichthyologist and Smithsonian administrator; the specific epithet atripinnis, from the Latin for "black-finned," gives the fish its English name, the blackfin goodea. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Goodea atripinnis Jordan, 1880 as the valid name, placing it in the family Goodeidae and the subfamily Goodeinae, the viviparous splitfins of Mexico.
The Goodeidae are a small family within the order Cyprinodontiformes, the toothcarps, and fall into two very different groups: the egg-laying Empetrichthyinae of the western United States and the live-bearing Goodeinae of the Mexican plateau. Goodea is one of the larger-bodied Goodeinae genera, and G. atripinnis is its most widespread species. The genus has a tangled nomenclatural history — several nominal Goodea species named from different basins have at various times been folded into G. atripinnis as synonyms, reflecting how broadly variable and far-ranging this one fish is across the Mesa Central. The species is sometimes split by some authors into regional forms, but it is most commonly treated as a single wide-ranging species. The name Goodea luitpoldii is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Goodea atripinnis is, by the standards of its family, a large and stocky fish. Males reach about 5 in in total length and females about 4.5 in, making it one of the bigger goodeids; many of its relatives are half that size. The body is deep, heavy-bodied and somewhat compressed, built more like a robust minnow than a slender livebearer, and the fins — the trait behind the name — are often dark, the dorsal and caudal in particular taking on a smoky to blackish cast in mature fish.
Sexual dimorphism in goodeids is present but more subtle than in the poeciliids. Males of G. atripinnis are not transformed into a colourful display sex the way male guppies are; instead the key male character is the modified anterior portion of the anal fin. Unlike the guppy's elongate gonopodium, the male goodeid's anal fin is notched and shortened at the front, the first few rays separated from the rest to form a short intromittent structure variously called the andropodium or spermatopodium. Females are generally larger-bodied and, when carrying young, distinctly swollen. Overall the species is a plain, sturdy fish — olive to greyish, sometimes with a faint mid-lateral marking — whose interest lies more in its biology and its dark fins than in bright colour.
Habitat
The blackfin goodea is endemic to central Mexico, ranging across the Lerma River basin and adjacent drainages of the Mesa Central, with records extending to the Ayuquila River and through Guanajuato and neighbouring states. It is a fish of the highland plateau, occupying rivers, streams, springs, lakes, ponds, irrigation canals and reservoirs across roughly 19–21°N latitude. It is demersal — bottom-oriented — in subtropical fresh waters, and its broad distribution across so many water types is exactly what underlies its adaptability.
The waters it favours are moderately warm, hard and alkaline. FishBase records a temperature span of about 64–75 °F, a pH of roughly 7.5–8.0 and a hardness range of about 5–25 dH, conditions typical of the mineral-rich highland lakes and spring systems of west-central Mexico. This tolerance for hard, alkaline water and for a wide range of habitat types — including disturbed and modified channels — is the reason G. atripinnis persists where narrowly endemic spring goodeids have collapsed. Even so, its local populations are not immune to the pollution, water extraction and introduced species that Lyons and colleagues documented as drivers of freshwater fish decline across the region.
Feeding
Goodea atripinnis sits low on the food web for a fish of its size. FishBase places it at a trophic level around 2.0, marking it as a herbivore- and detritivore-leaning omnivore: much of its diet is algae, plant matter, organic detritus and the small invertebrates associated with that material, grazed and sifted from the bottom and from submerged surfaces. Its deep body and bottom-oriented habits suit a fish that spends much of its time working over sediment and algal growth rather than chasing prey in open water.
In captivity the species is undemanding and adapts readily to prepared foods, but its strong vegetable bias should be respected. A good aquarium diet leans on quality flake and pellets with a substantial plant or algal component — spirulina-based foods, blanched vegetables and algae — supplemented with small live and frozen items such as Daphnia and brine shrimp for variety and breeding condition. As with most heavy-grazing fishes, modest, regular feedings suit it better than infrequent large meals.
Mating
Reproduction in Goodea atripinnis is internal, the defining feature of the live-bearing goodeids. Males do not possess the true gonopodium of the poeciliids; instead the front rays of the anal fin are notched off and shortened into a short intromittent organ — the andropodium or spermatopodium — used to inseminate the female directly. Fertilisation is internal, and unlike the guppy, the goodeid female does not store sperm long-term in the ovary, so each brood follows from fresh insemination rather than from a reserve banked months earlier.
Male goodeids court females using their modified anal fin and body posturing rather than the gaudy colour displays of male guppies. In wild populations on the Mexican plateau breeding is seasonal: studies of Lake Zacapu goodeines describe two reproductive peaks across the year, one in spring (roughly April–June) and a second in autumn (roughly September–November), keyed to the highland seasons. As one of the larger and more prolific splitfins, G. atripinnis is among the more fecund members of an otherwise modestly reproductive family.
Breeding
Goodea atripinnis is viviparous and matrotrophic, and this is where the family becomes biologically remarkable. The eggs carry very little yolk, so there is almost no lecithotrophic provisioning — the brief yolk reserve is quickly exhausted. The embryos then develop within the ovarian lumen (intraovarian gestation) and grow trophotaeniae: ribbon-like nutrient-absorbing cords extending from near the vent that function as a placental connection, drawing nourishment directly from the mother. In effect the female actively feeds her young through gestation rather than simply incubating self-sufficient eggs, the hallmark of the goodeid trophotaenial placenta.
Gestation in goodeids generally runs about six to eight weeks, and the young are born large and well developed — a consequence of all that maternal investment. The trophotaeniae are shed or reabsorbed at or shortly after birth, leaving free-swimming juveniles. Brood sizes are modest by livebearer standards, typically on the order of tens of fry per brood, though as one of the larger goodeids G. atripinnis tends toward the more prolific end of the family. (Precise brood-size and gestation figures here are drawn from group-level goodeid biology rather than a species-specific count for G. atripinnis, so they should be read as characteristic of the subfamily.) The well-grown fry take small prepared and live foods readily from birth.
In the aquarium
The blackfin goodea is a hardy, undemanding subject for the keeper interested in goodeids, and is kept and bred by specialist livebearer enthusiasts and conservation aquarists, including those working to maintain Mexican highland fishes in captivity. It is large, active and best given a roomy aquarium with good filtration and current; its size and energy make it unsuitable for small tanks or for delicate, slow tankmates. Goodeids in general can be nippy toward one another and toward long-finned fishes, so robust, similarly sized companions and a group with enough space to disperse aggression work best.
Water chemistry should mirror its highland origins: hard, alkaline water around pH 7.5–8.0, moderate hardness, and temperatures in the high teens to mid-20s Celsius. Many goodeids appreciate a seasonal cooling in winter, reflecting the temperate-subtropical plateau they come from, and steady, cool-leaning conditions suit them better than tropical warmth held year-round. Clean, well-oxygenated water and a vegetable-rich diet keep the fish in good condition. For the conservation-minded hobbyist, maintaining and breeding goodeids is more than a curiosity — the family as a whole is among the most threatened groups of freshwater fishes, and captive populations are a meaningful hedge against losses in the wild.
Conservation
Goodea atripinnis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, the assessment dated 13 April 2018. This status sets it apart from much of its family: many goodeids are narrowly endemic to single springs, crater lakes or short river reaches, and a large share of them are Endangered, Critically Endangered or already Extinct in the Wild, victims of water extraction, pollution and introduced species across the Mexican plateau. The blackfin goodea earns its more secure rating by being the opposite kind of fish — wide-ranging, generalist and adaptable across the Lerma–Santiago system and adjacent basins.
Least Concern at the species level does not mean untouched, however. Lyons and colleagues documented broad declines of freshwater fishes in west-central Mexico driven by habitat degradation, dewatering, pollution and non-native species, and local populations of G. atripinnis sit under the same pressures even as the species as a whole holds on. The fish is also of some local economic use — taken in artisanal fisheries and traded for the aquarium — and its fishing vulnerability is rated low. For aquarists, the species is best seen as both a hardy introduction to goodeid-keeping and a reminder of how precarious the rest of its family has become.
