Taxonomy & naming
Ictalurus ochoterenai was described by Fernando de Buen in 1946. It belongs to the family Ictaluridae, the North American catfishes, and to the genus Ictalurus, which includes the familiar channel catfish (I. punctatus) and blue catfish (I. furcatus) of the United States alongside a small cluster of Mexican endemics. It is one of two Ictalurus species restricted to the Lerma–Chapala–Santiago basin of central Mexico, the other being its close relative I. dugesii.
The genus name Ictalurus comes from the Greek ichthys (fish) and aiolouros/ailouros (cat), an old classical construction for "cat-fish" shared by the whole family. The species epithet ochoterenai honours Dr. Isaac Ochoterena Mendieta (1885–1950), a Mexican naturalist and long-serving director of the Instituto de Biología at UNAM, reflecting the species' description within Mexican academic ichthyology. Because it sits in a small, poorly documented endemic group, older or regional literature occasionally lumps it with I. dugesii or leaves it unlisted altogether; the Catalog of Fishes recognises Ictalurus ochoterenai as a valid, distinct species.
Morphology
As an ictalurid, Ictalurus ochoterenai has the classic bullhead/channel-catfish body plan: a stout, laterally compressed trunk, a broad flattened head, a wide terminal mouth ringed by four pairs of barbels, an adipose fin, and a forked tail typical of the free-swimming Ictalurus (as opposed to the square-tailed bullheads, Ameiurus). The skin is scaleless, like every North American catfish, which makes it more permeable and more sensitive to certain medications than a scaled fish.
No confirmed maximum length has been published for this species in the sources available; FishBase does not list a figure, and hobbyist documentation is essentially absent. Given its placement in Ictalurus alongside other freshwater-river species that commonly reach 12–19.5 in or more, it should be assumed capable of substantial adult size rather than staying at the small, juvenile size it may be seen at. Like other ictalurids it carries a stiff, serrated, locking spine at the leading edge of the dorsal fin and each pectoral fin — these lock rigid when the fish is alarmed, tangle in an aquarium net, and can jab the handler, so this species should be moved in a container rather than netted.
Habitat
Ictalurus ochoterenai is endemic to the Lerma River basin in central Mexico, a system that drains into Lake Chapala, Mexico's largest natural lake, and continues downstream as the Santiago River toward the Pacific. It is a freshwater, demersal (bottom-associated) species, living over the substrate of rivers, streams and lake margins within this basin rather than in open water.
The Lerma–Chapala basin lies within Mexico's tropical zone (roughly 19–21° N), but as with other members of Ictalurus, temperate river- and lake-adapted ancestry means these fish are generally more cold-tolerant than typical tropical aquarium fish and do not require or benefit from tropical heat. No specific water-chemistry data for this species has been located in the sources reviewed; keepers should default to cooler, well-oxygenated, moderately hard freshwater consistent with the wider genus rather than a warm soft-water tropical setup.
Feeding
Specific dietary data for Ictalurus ochoterenai has not been documented in the sources available, but the genus Ictalurus is uniformly made up of opportunistic, largely nocturnal predators and scavengers that use their barbels to locate food by smell and touch along the bottom. Related species take fish, aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans and any other animal matter small enough to swallow, and this species should be assumed to follow the same pattern.
Where it is kept, it should be offered meaty foods — whole fish, prawn, and sinking pellets or catfish-specific foods — rather than treated as a flake-eating community fish. Any tankmates must be too large for it to swallow, since a predatory ictalurid catfish will eat any fish or invertebrate that fits in its mouth.
Mating
No species-specific courtship or spawning account for Ictalurus ochoterenai has been found. Ictaluridae as a family is well documented as a group of cavity nesters: pairs seek out a sheltered site such as an undercut bank, a hollow, or another cave-like structure in a river or lake margin, and spawning takes place within that cavity rather than over open substrate or in a bubble nest. There is no reason from the family's biology to expect this species to differ, and it should be assumed to follow the same cavity-spawning pattern as its relatives until direct observations are published.
Breeding
Following the documented pattern for Ictaluridae, Ictalurus ochoterenai is expected to be a cavity or gravel-nest spawner in which the male guards and fans the egg mass after the pair spawns inside a burrow, undercut bank, or similar shelter — the same strategy used by well-studied ictalurids such as the channel catfish and various bullheads. No aquarium or hatchery breeding reports specific to this species were found in the sources reviewed, and as a narrow-range Mexican endemic with almost no hobbyist presence, it should be considered essentially unbred in captivity outside of any conservation-oriented fisheries work that may exist in Mexico. Prospective breeders should not expect it to behave like an egg-scattering community fish; any attempt would need to replicate a sheltered cavity and accept that the male, not the female, provides parental care.
In the aquarium
Ictalurus ochoterenai is not a fish for a typical home aquarium. As with other members of its genus, it should be expected to reach substantial adult size well beyond what most home tanks can accommodate — juveniles offered in the trade (where they appear at all) inevitably outgrow standard setups, and this species carries the same "size trap" caution that applies across Ictalurus. Because no confirmed adult length has been published for it, the safest working assumption is that it needs pond-scale or public-aquarium-scale housing, not a furnished community tank.
Two further care points follow directly from its biology. It is scaleless, so it should be treated as medication-sensitive: copper-based treatments and many standard medications should be dosed conservatively, as with loaches, puffers and other naked-skinned catfish. It also carries stiff, serrated, locking spines on the dorsal and pectoral fins that catch in nets and can injure a keeper's hands, so it should always be moved in a container rather than netted. As a nocturnal bottom-dweller it will want cover and subdued daytime lighting, and as a predator it must only be housed with tankmates too large to be swallowed. Given how little is documented about this species, anyone considering it should treat husbandry as experimental and prioritise its conservation value over casual aquarium display.
Conservation
Ictalurus ochoterenai has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so no official conservation status is currently available. This is common for narrow-range Mexican freshwater endemics that fall outside the scope of most global assessments.
As a species restricted entirely to the Lerma River basin — a heavily used system supporting agriculture, urban development and water extraction around Lake Chapala and Mexico City's wider watershed — it is reasonable to assume it faces the same pressures documented for other Lerma–Chapala endemics: habitat degradation, water abstraction, pollution and competition from introduced fish. Formal assessment and targeted survey work would be needed to establish its true conservation status.
