Taxonomy & naming
Hubbsina turneri was described by the Spanish-Mexican ichthyologist Fernando de Buen in 1940 (the formal account appeared in 1941, in the Anales de la Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biológicas), from material of the endorheic drainages of Michoacán, west-central Mexico. The type locality is Presa Cointzio, a dam on the Río Grande de Morelia; the holotype is a female of 2.5 in total length, with the allotype a male of 2 in. The genus name Hubbsina is a latinised feminine form honouring the great American ichthyologist Carl Leavitt Hubbs (1894–1979), while the species epithet turneri honours Clarence Lester Turner (1890–1969), the American zoologist who pioneered the study of embryology and viviparity in goodeid fishes — a fitting dedication for a matrotrophic livebearer.
The genus sits within the splitfins, family Goodeidae, subfamily Goodeinae, in the order Cyprinodontiformes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, and the Goodeid Working Group treats Hubbsina as a valid, monotypic (unispecific) genus. Synonyms accumulated through the late twentieth century — Girardinichthys turneri (Radda, 1984) and Girardinichthys ireneae (Radda, 2003) — reflecting a long-running debate over whether the splitfin belongs in Hubbsina or in the closely allied genus Girardinichthys.
The taxonomy remains genuinely complex and is worth stating plainly rather than glossing over. Morphological and molecular studies (Moncayo-Estrada 1993; Doadrio & Domínguez-Domínguez 2004) found turneri and the later-named ireneae effectively indistinguishable. Under the alternative treatment of Lyons and colleagues (2019) the former H. turneri was split, with the nominal Cuitzeo/Yuriria populations of turneri considered effectively extinct and the surviving Lake Zacapu population recognised as Girardinichthys ireneae. The Goodeid Working Group, by contrast, retains Hubbsina as a distinct valid genus, noting that it is unique among goodeids in possessing the highest dorsal-ray count without a corresponding increase in anal-ray count.
Morphology
Hubbsina turneri is a small, deep-bodied splitfin. The maximum recorded size is modest: FishBase gives about 2 in total length for males and unsexed fish and up to roughly 2.5 in for females, while Miller and colleagues (2005) report a maximum standard length of around 2.5 in. Females are the larger sex, as is typical of goodeids — the original female paratypes measured 2.5–3 in total length against male paratypes of 1.5–2 in.
In life the fish is golden-brown to yellowish-brown in both sexes, marked with irregular dark blotches that are heaviest on the caudal peduncle, the posterior underside, and the base of the dorsal fin. Unusually, the pattern is darkest on the venter and palest on the dorsum — the reverse of the countershading seen in most diurnal goodeids, and consistent with this species' more nocturnal and crepuscular habits.
The single most distinctive feature is the dorsal fin. Among the splitfins, Hubbsina alone carries the highest dorsal-ray count without the increase in anal-fin rays that usually accompanies it, giving males in particular a notably tall, sail-like dorsal. Sexual dimorphism otherwise follows the goodeid pattern: males bear the andropodium — a notch in the anal fin formed after the first roughly seven shortened anal-fin rays — used in internal fertilisation, and a conspicuously larger dorsal fin, while differences in colour between the sexes are slight.
Habitat
The highland splitfin is endemic to the highlands of Michoacán, in the endorheic (closed, internally draining) basins of west-central Mexico. Historically it occupied the Río Grande de Morelia drainage — including its type locality at Presa Cointzio — along with Lake Cuitzeo and its affluents, Laguna Yuriria, and the former Zacapu paleolake. Three subpopulations are recognised: the Río Grande de Morelia and Laguna Yuriria stocks are now considered extinct, and only the Río Ángulo drainage population, in the spring-fed areas of Lake Zacapu, survives.
The species favours quiet waters with little to no current — lakes, ponds, canals and ditches — over substrates of mud, silt, clay, sand, rock and organic matter. It prefers shallow water, generally less than about 4 ft deep (around 2–3 ft in the Zacapu springs), and tolerates conditions from clear to turbid. Dense aquatic vegetation is important to it: stands of green algae, Potamogeton, Eichhornia (water hyacinth), Typha, Scirpus, Chara and Ceratophyllum provide cover, and the fish hides among vegetation, willow roots and fallen leaves. It is largely nocturnal to crepuscular in habit.
The recorded water parameters are those of a warm but temperate-influenced highland system: FishBase reports a temperature range of roughly 73–79 °F, pH of 7.0 to 7.5, and hardness up to about 15 dH, at latitudes between about 19° and 21° N. The collapse of the wider range to a handful of spring-fed refuges at Zacapu reflects the loss and degradation of these endorheic lake and river habitats.
Feeding
Hubbsina turneri is a dietary specialist on small planktonic invertebrates. In the wild it feeds chiefly on copepods, cladocerans such as Daphnia, and the larvae of aquatic insects, particularly chironomid (non-biting midge) larvae. Its low trophic level — around 2.0 in FishBase — reflects this diet of small drifting and benthic invertebrates rather than larger prey or plant matter.
Its nocturnal and crepuscular activity fits a foraging strategy built around the dawn and dusk movements of zooplankton and emerging insect larvae among the dense vegetation it inhabits. The fish's preference for shallow, well-vegetated, slow-moving water places it in exactly the productive micro-habitats where these small invertebrates concentrate.
In the aquarium the species readily accepts brine shrimp (Artemia) nauplii, bloodworms and other frozen foods, though it only rarely takes dry flake — a reminder of its specialised wild diet. Keepers report best condition and breeding on a varied menu of small live and frozen invertebrate foods rather than on prepared dry rations alone.
Mating
As a member of the family Goodeidae, Hubbsina turneri practises internal fertilisation, but it does so without the gonopodium of the New World poeciliids. Instead the male bears an andropodium — the front portion of the anal fin modified into a short, notched, partly separated lobe formed after the first roughly seven shortened rays. This structure, the goodeid analogue of the poeciliid gonopodium, is pressed against the female to transfer sperm during a brief copulation rather than the prolonged pairing of egg-laying fishes.
Sexual dimorphism in the species centres on this reproductive apparatus and on the dorsal fin: males carry the andropodium and a markedly larger, taller dorsal fin, while the two sexes differ only slightly in colour. The enlarged male dorsal is presumed to function in display, as in other splitfins, though courtship behaviour in this secretive, low-light species is poorly documented compared with the better-studied poeciliid livebearers.
Unlike many poeciliids, goodeids generally do not store sperm for long periods or show pronounced superfetation (carrying overlapping broods at different stages); each brood follows its own mating. Detailed behavioural accounts for this particular species are sparse, and the most reliable information comes from aquarium observation rather than field study of its now largely vanished wild populations.
Breeding
Hubbsina turneri is viviparous and matrotrophic, the defining reproductive mode of the splitfins. After internal fertilisation the embryos develop inside the female and are nourished not by a yolk reserve but through trophotaeniae — ribbon-like extensions of the gut that protrude from the embryo and absorb nutrients directly from the mother, the goodeid equivalent of a placenta. The young are therefore born as well-developed, free-swimming fish.
Broods are large for a fish of this size: big females may carry 20 to 40 fry. The young are born over a season running at least from May through August in the wild, and — unusually and helpfully for breeders — the fry are generally not eaten by the adults, in contrast to the cannibalistic habits of guppies and many other livebearers. Newborns of the original type series included fry of around 0.5 in.
In captivity the species' breeding tracks temperature closely, reflecting its highland origins. It spawns at cool temperatures of about 63–64 °F and stops producing fry above roughly 75 °F; keepers deliberately give the fish a cool winter rest below 68 °F (and it tolerates brief dips toward 50 °F) for two to three months to halt reproduction and let the brood-stock recover. This seasonal cool period is a genuine husbandry requirement rather than an optional refinement, and getting it right is central to maintaining the species in conservation aquaculture.
In the aquarium
The highland splitfin is a specialist's fish kept above all for conservation reasons, and much of the surviving population now exists in the tanks of dedicated goodeid keepers and the Goodeid Working Group rather than in the wild. It is not a beginner's livebearer: it needs cool, well-oxygenated, heavily structured water and a deliberate seasonal temperature cycle, and it is not freely available in the general trade.
Recommended husbandry calls for a tank of at least about 20 US gal, broad and low (around 10 in deep) rather than tall, structured with roots, wood and leaf litter and densely planted, with moderate current and high dissolved oxygen (8 mg/l or more). The species responds well to large, frequent water changes of 60 to 80 percent weekly. Crucially, it requires a cool winter rest below 68 °F — tolerating brief excursions toward 50 °F — for two to three months each year; without this cooling period the fish breeds itself into exhaustion and condition suffers.
Feeding should reflect its specialised wild diet: brine shrimp nauplii, bloodworms and other small frozen and live invertebrate foods, with dry flake accepted only reluctantly. Kept properly — cool, clean, well-fed and seasonally rested — it is a rewarding fish for the serious aquarist, and keeping it well is, in a real sense, an act of conservation for a species that has largely disappeared from its native waters.
Conservation
Hubbsina turneri is assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List (assessment dated 17 April 2018), under criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv) — a listing driven by its tiny, fragmented and declining range. Within Mexico it is additionally protected under NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, which lists it as P, En Peligro de Extinción (in danger of extinction). It is, by any measure, one of the most threatened freshwater fishes of central Mexico.
The decline has been severe and well-documented. Of the three historical subpopulations, those of the Río Grande de Morelia basin and Laguna Yuriria are considered extinct — the species has not been recorded in the Río Grande de Morelia drainage since the late 1980s — leaving only the Río Ángulo population in the spring-fed areas of Lake Zacapu. Even there the situation is precarious: a population found at a spring at Jesús María (on the Canal Patera / Río Ángulo system) in 2013 is now thought likely to have been extirpated. The drivers are the familiar ones for endorheic Mexican fishes — habitat loss and degradation, water extraction, pollution and introduced species — compounded by the fish's narrow ecological requirements.
The taxonomic ambiguity surrounding the species carries real conservation weight. Under the treatment that splits the older H. turneri, the nominal turneri of Cuitzeo and Yuriria would be effectively extinct, with no captive stock, while the surviving Zacapu unit (treated by some as Girardinichthys ireneae) is the Critically Endangered, still-declining population. Whichever name is applied, the practical reality is the same: the species persists largely thanks to ex-situ conservation aquaculture by the Goodeid Working Group and allied aquarists, and its long-term survival may depend more on those captive lineages than on its dwindling wild refuges.
