Hemirhamphodon tengah is a small, surface-dwelling halfbeak from the blackwater peat swamps of Central Kalimantan, on the Indonesian side of Borneo. It belongs to a genus of internally fertilising halfbeaks that are otherwise live-bearers — and that is exactly what makes this species remarkable: alone among its relatives, H. tengah does not give birth to live young. It is the egg-laying exception, fertilising its eggs internally but releasing them to be deposited among surface vegetation, a reproductive oddity within a family otherwise defined by viviparity. A nervous, elongate fish of slow, tannin-stained water, it reaches the hobby as the "Borneo redline halfbeak," prized by specialists and demanding the soft, acidic conditions of its native swamp forests.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemirhamphodon tengah was described by Bruce B. Collette in 1991, in a revision (Anderson & Collette, 1991) of the freshwater halfbeaks of the genus Hemirhamphodon published in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters. The genus was historically placed in the halfbeak family Hemiramphidae, but the internally fertilising freshwater halfbeaks — Hemirhamphodon, Dermogenys, Nomorhamphus and their kin — are now treated as the family Zenarchopteridae within the order Beloniformes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Hemirhamphodon tengah Collette, 1991 as the valid name.

The specific epithet refers directly to the fish's home. "Tengah" is the Indonesian word for "central," and the species is named for Kalimantan Tengah — Central Kalimantan — the Bornean province from which most of the type material was collected. The genus name Hemirhamphodon is built from Greek roots: hemi (half) and rhamphos (bill or beak), recalling the family's hallmark elongated lower jaw, combined with odous (tooth).

Within the genus, H. tengah is closely associated with H. chrysopunctatus, a co-occurring relative; the two were distinguished in part by Collette's revision and later field work (Tan & Lim, 2013). The species is diagnosed by a small adult size and meristic characters — usually eight pectoral rays, 13 to 15 dorsal-fin rays, and an anal-fin origin in an anterior position, typically beneath the fifth or sixth dorsal-fin ray.

Morphology

Hemirhamphodon tengah is a small, slender, surface-oriented fish. FishBase records a maximum size of about 1.5 in standard length (1.5 in SL); in the aquarium hobby, total-length figures of around 2 in are sometimes quoted, the difference reflecting the long, narrow body and the measurement convention used. The body is elongate and cylindrical, built for hanging just beneath the water's surface film.

As in other halfbeaks, the lower jaw is produced into a slender "beak" while the upper jaw is short — the feature that gives the family its name and that suits a fish which feeds on items drifting at or just above the surface. The dorsal and anal fins are set well back on the body, and the anal-fin origin lies in an anterior position relative to the dorsal fin. In the hobby the species carries the name "redline halfbeak" for the coloured markings along its flanks.

The genus is internally fertilising, and the males bear a modified anal fin used in sperm transfer — sometimes termed an andropodium, the halfbeak analogue of the poeciliid gonopodium. Sexual dimorphism in Hemirhamphodon is expressed through this modified male fin and through male coloration and display behaviour; precise published dimorphism details for H. tengah specifically are sparse, and care should be taken not to over-state them.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Kalimantan Tengah (Central Kalimantan), in Indonesian Borneo. The IUCN assessment records it from within Sebangau (Sabangau) National Park and from Sungei Sarano, and notes a distribution centred on the lowland peat-swamp landscapes of the region. It is a blackwater fish of soft, acidic, tannin-stained water — the dark, slow waters that drain Borneo's peat-swamp forests.

Its recorded habitats include permanent rivers, streams and creeks, bogs, marshes, swamps and peatlands, and permanent freshwater marshes and pools. Within these, H. tengah prefers slower-flowing water than the co-occurring H. chrysopunctatus, partitioning the habitat with its close relative. As an obligate surface-dweller it is tied to densely vegetated margins where overhanging and floating plants provide both cover and a steady supply of food falling onto the water.

The water itself is the defining feature: hobby husbandry guidance for the species calls for soft, acidic conditions — pH roughly 5.5 to 6.5, very low hardness (often requiring reverse-osmosis water), and warm temperatures around 77–82 °F — directly mirroring the peat-swamp environment. There is no need for seasonal variation in captivity, reflecting the stable warmth of its equatorial range.

Feeding

Hemirhamphodon tengah is a surface feeder, and its biology is built around food that arrives at the air-water interface. The IUCN assessment notes that the species feeds predominantly on terrestrial insects taken at the water surface — a habit that makes it directly dependent on riparian vegetation, since the loss of overhanging plants removes the source of falling prey. This tight link between the fish and the streamside forest is also why deforestation is a meaningful threat to it.

In the aquarium it remains a strict surface feeder and largely ignores food that has sunk. Suitable foods include floating flakes and granules, buoyant frozen items such as white mosquito larvae and Daphnia, and live foods — newly hatched brine shrimp (Artemia) are especially useful for settling freshly imported fish that may at first refuse prepared diets.

Because the fish hunts at the surface and is adapted to small, drifting prey, a varied diet of small floating and live foods keeps it in good condition. Sunken pellets and bottom foods are wasted on this species; husbandry should be planned around the surface as the feeding zone.

Mating

Hemirhamphodon tengah practises internal fertilisation, the shared trait of the zenarchopterid halfbeaks. The male defends a surface territory and courts the female with a distinctive mating dance: he moves alongside or behind her, swinging from side to side, and beats his modified anal fin (the andropodium) against her body, transferring sperm to her genital pore. This courtship has been documented in aquaria (Dorn & Greven, 2007).

A notable feature of the system is sperm storage. After transfer, sperm can be held by the female for an unspecified period before the eggs are fertilised — a trait shared with many internally fertilising fishes and one that allows fertilisation to be decoupled in time from mating. Males are territorial and will perform their display to establish and hold a patch of the surface.

Unlike the poeciliid livebearers, where the male's gonopodium and the female's prolonged internal gestation are the centre of the reproductive story, in H. tengah internal fertilisation is followed not by live birth but by egg-laying. This places the species at an unusual midpoint: it has the internal, male-displaying mating system of its viviparous relatives, but releases fertilised eggs rather than retaining and bearing developed young.

Breeding

Hemirhamphodon tengah is the egg-laying exception within a genus of livebearers. Both the IUCN Red List and hobbyist care literature flag this explicitly: whereas its relatives in the genus (and in the genera Dermogenys and Nomorhamphus) are normally viviparous, giving birth to live young, H. tengah does not. Instead it is oviparous — the eggs are fertilised internally but are then released and deposited rather than carried to term. The developmental stage of the young at release is reported to be inconsistent or not fully established, which is why the species is described as "likely embryoparous," sitting on the boundary between true egg-laying and live-bearing.

In aquaria, the female deposits her fertilised eggs into dense surface plant growth — Limnophila, the trailing roots of floating plants such as Pistia, or woollen spawning mops serve as deposition sites. Reported figures put hatching at around day 18 at 77 °F, after which the fry retain a yolk sac for roughly two further days before becoming free-feeding.

Raising the fry is built around their surface orientation. Suitable first foods include vinegar eels, which feed at the surface and so reach the fry, followed by small powdered foods, freshwater copepods and young Daphnia as the young grow. Because the species is a careful, plant-spawning egg-layer rather than a prolific livebearer, brood numbers are modest and breeding rewards attention to water quality and surface cover. Note that no superfetation — the overlapping of successive broods seen in some poeciliids — applies here, since this species does not bear live young.

In the aquarium

Hemirhamphodon tengah is a specialist's fish rather than a general community species. It is an obligate surface-dweller that needs surface area more than water volume: a long, broad footprint suits it far better than a tall tank, with a minimum length of around 29.5 in and an ideal closer to 100 × 15.5 in. The surface should be richly furnished with floating plants and dense marginal growth, both for cover and because the fish lives and feeds at the top of the water.

The species is nervous and prone to darting and jumping, and the long, delicate beak is easily injured against hard surfaces or the cover glass. A tight-fitting lid is essential, and gradual lighting and heavy surface planting help reduce panicked dashes. Water must match the blackwater origin: soft and acidic, pH roughly 5.5 to 6.5, very low hardness (often reverse-osmosis water), and a temperature of about 77–82 °F.

Though peaceful, H. tengah is too shy and specialised for a busy community. Better companions are other soft-water, blackwater specialists that share its temperament — Parosphromenus licorice gouramis, chocolate gouramis (Sphaerichthys), larger Boraras and Sundadanio, wild Betta, and Trigonostigma. Robust, boisterous, or much larger tankmates will leave this surface-bound, easily startled fish stressed and underfed.

Conservation

Hemirhamphodon tengah is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessed 14 January 2020; Daniels, 2020). The justification notes that the species is relatively widespread within its range and, while it may be undergoing localised declines, is not considered to be approaching the threshold for a threatened category. Its occurrence within Sebangau (Sabangau) National Park affords some habitat protection.

The threats it faces are nonetheless real and tied to the fate of Borneo's peat-swamp forests. Deforestation and forest fires, conversion of land to oil-palm plantations, dam construction, logging and resulting sedimentation all degrade the blackwater habitats the species depends on. Because it feeds on terrestrial insects falling from streamside vegetation, the loss of riparian forest is especially damaging — it removes the fish's food supply as well as its cover.

The species is also collected for the international ornamental-fish trade, and over-exploitation is listed among the pressures on wild populations. For aquarists this argues for sourcing captive-bred stock where possible and for keeping the species well enough to breed it, reducing reliance on wild collection from a habitat already under pressure from land-use change.
