Taxonomy & naming
Jenynsia tucumana was described in 2005 by Gastón Aguilera and Juan Marcos Mirande in the journal Zootaxa, from material collected in the upper Río Salí basin of Tucumán province, in north-western Argentina. The describing paper — "A new species of Jenynsia (Cyprinodontiformes: Anablepidae) from northwestern Argentina and its phylogenetic relationships" — both named the fish and placed it within a phylogeny of its genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Jenynsia tucumana Aguilera & Mirande, 2005 as the valid name.
The species belongs to the order Cyprinodontiformes and the family Anablepidae, the four-eyed fishes and one-sided livebearers, within the subfamily Anablepinae. Jenynsia is a genus of small viviparous toothcarps confined to southern South America, and the genus name is an eponym: it honours the Reverend Leonard Jenyns (1800–1893), the English clergyman and amateur naturalist who described the fishes of Darwin's Beagle voyage. The specific epithet tucumana refers directly to Tucumán, the Argentine province that holds the type locality.
The species was diagnosed against its congeners by a distinctive row of dark lateral markings — dots grading into short vertical bars — running from the tip of the adpressed pectoral fin back to the margin of the hypural plate, arranged in two (occasionally three) rows of dorsoventrally elongate marks, together with details of the male gonopodium (notably a symmetric fifth anal-fin ray) and its meristics: roughly 7–8 dorsal soft rays, about 10 anal soft rays, 31–32 vertebrae and 15–16 predorsal scales. In the upper Río Salí it occurs alongside the wider-ranging Jenynsia multidentata (of the J. lineata complex), from which these characters separate it.
Morphology
Jenynsia tucumana is a small fish, reaching about 1.5 in in standard length in the material on which the species is based. The body is fusiform and normally proportioned — there is none of the bizarre eye structure of the four-eyed Anableps, despite the shared family. The most useful field mark is the patterning along the flank: a row of dark markings, ranging from discrete dots to small vertical stripes, extends from the tip of the adpressed pectoral fin to the margin of the hypural plate, organised into two (sometimes three) rows of dorsoventrally elongate marks. This lateral barring is the feature the describers used to distinguish it from other Jenynsia in the same waters.
Meristically the species runs to roughly 7–8 soft dorsal rays, about 10 soft anal rays, 31–32 vertebrae and 15–16 predorsal scales — characters recorded in the original description and summarised on FishBase. As in all livebearing poeciliforms, the sexes differ in the anal fin: males bear a gonopodium, a tubular intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays, while females retain an ordinary fan-shaped anal fin.
Beyond size, fin counts and the lateral marking pattern, detailed colour and soft-anatomy data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature, and there is little published on living coloration in the field. The safest summary is of a small, plainly built stream fish whose taxonomic identity rests on meristics, gonopodial structure and that diagnostic row of lateral marks rather than on conspicuous live colour.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the upper Río Salí basin in Tucumán province, north-western Argentina — the type locality and, as far as is known, effectively its entire range. This is an upland, subtropical drainage on the eastern flank of the Andean foothills, and the fish is a creature of running water rather than still pools.
Within that basin Jenynsia tucumana occurs mainly in moderate to slow-flowing streams with rocky bottoms, where the substrate carries a film of algae. It is benthopelagic, living in close association with the stony bed, and is classed as a freshwater, tropical/subtropical species. Its restriction to a single small basin of suitable rocky streams is precisely what makes it vulnerable: a narrowly endemic fish has little room to absorb habitat loss or degradation.
It shares these streams with Jenynsia multidentata, a far more widespread member of the genus, the two being sympatric in the upper Salí. Beyond the broad picture of clear, rocky, algae-coated headwater streams, fine-scale water-chemistry data specific to this species are not well documented in the accessible sources, so precise temperature and pH preferences are best treated as data sparse.
Feeding
Jenynsia tucumana is, by all indications, a grazer of the algal and detrital films that coat the stones of its home streams. FishBase places it at an estimated trophic level of about 2.9, consistent with a diet dominated by algae and associated detritus rather than by larger prey, and its recorded habitat — rocky-bottomed streams with algae on the substrate — fits that of a substrate scraper working over biofilm.
Like most small stream-dwelling toothcarps it is very likely an opportunist that also takes small aquatic invertebrates, micro-crustaceans and insect larvae when they are available, supplementing the algal staple. No detailed gut-content study specific to this species is reflected in the accessible sources, however, so the picture is assembled from its trophic estimate and the character of its habitat rather than from direct dietary observation.
In practical terms this is a micro-grazer of clean, well-oxygenated running water — a feeding ecology that ties it tightly to the health of the algal turf on its stream bed, and one more reason its fortunes are bound to the condition of a single small drainage.
Mating
Jenynsia are livebearers, and reproduction is internal: males inseminate females directly using a gonopodium, a slender tubular organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin, rather than fertilising eggs externally. This is the defining reproductive feature of the one-sided livebearers and is shared across the genus.
What sets the Anablepidae apart from the more familiar poeciliid livebearers — the guppies, platies and swordtails — is laterality. In Jenynsia the gonopodium of a male is directed to either the left or the right side, and the female's genital region is correspondingly asymmetric, so that a "left-handed" male can only successfully inseminate a "right-handed" female and vice versa. This one-sidedness is the origin of the family's English name and imposes an unusual constraint on which individuals can pair. The original description of J. tucumana itself drew on gonopodial structure — including a symmetric fifth anal-fin ray — as a diagnostic character, underscoring how central the male organ is to the systematics of the group.
Species-specific courtship behaviour for J. tucumana has not been documented in the accessible literature, so the account here rests on the well-established reproductive mode of the genus rather than on direct observation of this fish; finer behavioural detail is best treated as data sparse.
Breeding
As a member of Jenynsia, J. tucumana is a viviparous, matrotrophic livebearer: after internal fertilisation the female retains the developing embryos and nourishes them through gestation, giving birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. Matrotrophy — maternal provisioning of the embryos beyond the initial yolk — is characteristic of the genus and distinguishes these fishes from purely lecithotrophic (yolk-feeding) livebearers.
FishBase notes a high resilience for the species, with an estimated population-doubling time of under fifteen months, which implies a reasonably productive reproductive output for so small a fish. Beyond that, the accessible sources carry no species-specific figures for brood size, gestation length, or the presence of superfetation (the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages, known in some other livebearers), so those particulars are genuinely data sparse for J. tucumana and should not be assumed from relatives.
The broad picture, then, is of a small viviparous stream fish that gives live birth to fully formed fry and is capable of fairly rapid population growth under good conditions — but whose detailed breeding biology remains largely unstudied, in keeping with how recently the species was described and how little fieldwork it has received.
In the aquarium
Jenynsia tucumana is essentially not an aquarium fish. It is a narrowly endemic, Endangered species known only from the upper Río Salí basin, and it has no presence in the ornamental trade; there is no body of hobbyist husbandry experience to draw on for it specifically. Anyone encountering it would do so in a scientific or conservation context, not a pet-shop one.
What little can be inferred about its needs comes from its ecology rather than from captive practice. It is a fish of cool to subtropical, rocky-bottomed, moderately flowing headwater streams with algae-covered substrate, so it would require clean, well-oxygenated, current-bearing water and a grazing diet — conditions quite unlike the warm, still tanks that suit guppies and mollies. The genus as a whole includes hardier, more widespread members (such as J. multidentata) that do occasionally appear in specialist livebearer circles, but those are not this species and should not be conflated with it.
For this atlas the honest position is that J. tucumana belongs in the wild and in the literature rather than in the home aquarium. Its value is as a window onto the diversity of South American livebearers and as a small, range-restricted endemic whose survival depends on the integrity of one Argentine drainage.
Conservation
Jenynsia tucumana is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), in an assessment dated 15 January 2021 (IUCN species ID 178436758). The criterion-B listing reflects a very small, restricted geographic range — a limited extent of occurrence and area of occupancy — combined with a continuing decline in the quality of its habitat (the "iii" qualifier), exactly the profile expected of a fish confined to the upper Río Salí basin of Tucumán.
The core threat to a single-basin endemic like this is degradation of its headwater streams: changes in water quality, flow and the algal substrate on which it grazes, whether from agriculture, urban expansion around Tucumán, or other catchment-scale pressures. With its whole world contained in one small drainage, the species has no refuge population elsewhere to buffer local losses, which is what pushes it into the Endangered category despite a potentially productive reproductive rate.
Detailed, species-specific threat and population data remain thin, consistent with how recently the fish was described and how little targeted study it has received. The conservation message is nonetheless clear: protecting J. tucumana means protecting the water quality and stream habitat of the upper Río Salí, and the species is a useful flagship for the freshwater biodiversity of north-western Argentina's Andean-foothill streams.
