Jenynsia unitaenia is a small, stream-dwelling livebearer from the coastal rivers of southern Brazil, named for the single dark stripe that runs the length of its flank. It belongs to the four-eyed-fish family Anablepidae and to one of the strangest groups of viviparous fishes on earth — the onesided livebearers, in which males and females are mirror-image "left-handed" or "right-handed" and can only pair with a partner of the opposite handedness. Described as recently as 1995, the species is a quiet, plainly marked fish of clear coastal streams in Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, far better known to ichthyologists than to aquarists.

Taxonomy & naming

Jenynsia unitaenia was described by Michael J. Ghedotti and Stanley H. Weitzman in 1995. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Jenynsia unitaenia Ghedotti & Weitzman, 1995 as the valid name, placing it in the genus Jenynsia within the family Anablepidae — the four-eyed fishes and onesided livebearers — in the order Cyprinodontiformes. The genus Jenynsia honours the Reverend Leonard Jenyns (1800–1893), the English clergyman and amateur naturalist who described the fishes Charles Darwin collected on the voyage of the Beagle.

The Anablepidae are a small New World family that, alongside the much larger Poeciliidae, make up the live-bearing toothcarps of the Americas. The family unites three very different-looking lineages: the surface-skimming four-eyed fishes (Anableps), the white-eye Oxyzygonectes, and Jenynsia, the onesided livebearers. Within Jenynsia, J. unitaenia is one of a number of South American species, and the genus has been revised several times as new forms have been recognised. The species' phylogenetic placement was treated in detail by Ghedotti's 1998 analysis of anablepid relationships, the main reference cited for the species on FishBase.

The specific epithet unitaenia is the source of the English name "onestriped livebearer": it refers to the single midlateral stripe that distinguishes this fish from congeners that carry additional dorsolateral or ventrolateral markings. The name is descriptive rather than commemorative, and the fish has little presence in the aquarium trade, so its only widely used common name is the one taken directly from the scientific epithet.

Morphology

Jenynsia unitaenia is a small fish, reaching about 3 in in standard length in the largest recorded specimens. The body is fusiform and unexceptional in overall shape, with a slightly subterminal mouth. The fins are modest: the dorsal carries roughly 10 to 12 soft rays and the anal 9 to 10. The single most useful field character — and the basis of both the scientific and common names — is a single midlateral stripe running along the flank, without the associated dorsolateral or ventrolateral stripes or blotches found in some related species.

Internally, the species is distinguished by its gill-raker count: more than thirteen relatively long, slender rakers on the ventral limb of the first gill arch, a higher number than in many of its relatives and consistent with a diet weighted toward small drifting and suspended food items. The overall colouration is restrained — a plain-bodied stream fish rather than a showy one — which, together with its limited distribution, helps explain why it has stayed out of the ornamental trade.

As in other Jenynsia, the species shows the asymmetry that defines the onesided livebearers. Males possess a tubular gonopodium formed from modified anal-fin rays, used to inseminate the female internally; this organ is bent to either the left or the right, making individual males functionally "left-handed" or "right-handed." Females are correspondingly asymmetric in the orientation of the genital opening. Beyond this, males are the smaller sex and females the larger, as is typical of the family, though detailed sexual-dimorphism measurements specific to J. unitaenia are sparse in the literature.

Habitat

Jenynsia unitaenia is endemic to the Atlantic coastal drainages of southern Brazil. FishBase records it from coastal rivers in Santa Catarina and north-eastern Rio Grande do Sul states, where it is found in streams. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of temperate to subtropical latitudes — the southern Brazilian coast lies well outside the tropics proper — and occupies the small, clear, flowing waters characteristic of the region's short coastal rivers.

These coastal streams drain the eastern slopes of the Serra Geral and the adjacent lowlands toward the Atlantic, a setting of relatively cool, well-oxygenated running water rather than the warm still pools favoured by many tropical livebearers. The species' temperate affinities mean it experiences a genuine seasonal temperature swing, and aquarium temperatures suited to it should sit lower than those used for guppies or mollies. Precise water-chemistry data tied to specific localities are not captured in the cached sources, so the figures below should be read as a conservative envelope inferred from the species' coastal-stream, temperate habitat rather than from measured field readings.

In captivity — where the species is rarely kept — fish of this type accept the standard small-livebearer fare: good-quality flake and micro-pellets supplemented with small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp and finely chopped bloodworm, plus some vegetable or algal content. Given the genus's temperate origins, feeding should track the fish's activity level, which falls as water temperature drops.

Mating

Like all members of its family, Jenynsia unitaenia reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, the tubular intromittent organ derived from modified anal-fin rays that is the hallmark of the live-bearing toothcarps. There is no egg-laying and no external spawning; mating is a direct, internal event between two fish.

What sets Jenynsia apart from the poeciliid livebearers is its lateral asymmetry, the trait that gives the group the name "onesided livebearers." A male's gonopodium bends consistently to the left or to the right — he is dextral or sinistral — and the female's genital region is correspondingly oriented. A left-bending male can therefore only inseminate a right-oriented female, and vice versa; fish of the same handedness are mechanically unable to pair. This produces a striking population-level structure in which the two mirror-image morphs must cross with one another, a phenomenon that has made Jenynsia a subject of interest in studies of antisymmetry and mating mechanics.

Species-specific courtship behaviour for J. unitaenia has not been documented in the cached sources, and should be treated as data sparse. This maternal investment is one of the features that makes the anablepid livebearers of particular interest to reproductive biologists, and it tends to be associated with comparatively small broods of well-developed young.

The most important husbandry point follows from its origin in cool, flowing southern Brazilian coastal streams: this is not a warm-water fish, and it should not be kept at the high temperatures suited to guppies and mollies. A cooler, well-oxygenated, gently flowing aquarium with clean water better matches its native conditions. As a small, social cyprinodontiform it would be expected to do best in a group, in a tank that reproduces a stream rather than a still tropical pool.

One genuine caution attaches to the genus as a whole: some Jenynsia are reported to be more aggressive or fin-nipping than the placid poeciliid livebearers, so any keeper working with this group should watch tankmate selection carefully and not assume guppy-like temperament. Because firm, species-specific aquarium data for J. unitaenia are lacking, a careful aquarist should treat it as a specialist subject — observe and record rather than rely on received wisdom.

Conservation

Jenynsia unitaenia is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. The assessment was carried out by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), the Brazilian federal conservation agency, and dates to 2018. The species' high biological resilience — with a population doubling time estimated at under fifteen months — and its low vulnerability to fishing pressure are consistent with a fish under no significant threat at the species level.

That said, the species is a narrow-range endemic, confined to the coastal rivers of Santa Catarina and north-eastern Rio Grande do Sul. Fishes restricted to short coastal drainages in a densely populated and rapidly developing part of Brazil can be exposed to localised pressures — habitat alteration, pollution and water abstraction — even when the overall assessment is favourable, so the Least Concern status reflects current abundance rather than a guarantee against future local declines.

There is no indication that J. unitaenia is exploited by the aquarium trade or subject to any targeted threat, and it has not been reported outside its native basins. The responsible course for anyone keeping members of this genus is the same as for any livebearer: never release captive fish into local waters, since adaptable small livebearers can establish themselves readily where they do not belong.
