Nomorhamphus aenigma is a halfbeak that has lost its beak. Described in 2020 from a single forest stream in the Malili lakes drainage of South Sulawesi, this small viviparous fish is the riddle its name announces: a member of a family defined by an elongate, fixed lower jaw, in which that very jaw has secondarily vanished. Like all of its relatives it carries live young, fertilised internally and born free-swimming — but it is the missing beak, not the live birth, that makes it remarkable to ichthyologists working on Sulawesi's extraordinary freshwater fauna.

Taxonomy & naming

Nomorhamphus aenigma was described by Kobayashi, Masengi and Yamahira in 2020, in the journal Copeia (108(3):522–531; doi 10.1643/CI-19-313), under the title "A New 'Beakless' Halfbeak of the Genus Nomorhamphus from Sulawesi." The type material was collected from the upper reaches of the Cerekang River, part of the Malili River basin in South Sulawesi (Sulawesi Selatan), Indonesia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Nomorhamphus aenigma Kobayashi, Masengi & Yamahira, 2020 as the valid name, in the genus Nomorhamphus within the family Zenarchopteridae — the internally fertilising, mostly live-bearing halfbeaks of South and Southeast Asia.

The genus name Nomorhamphus combines Greek roots referring to the beak that characterises the group, and the species epithet aenigma is Greek for "riddle." The name is a deliberate pun on the fish's defining feature: by lacking the elongate lower jaw that gives halfbeaks their name, N. aenigma poses the riddle the authors highlight — why are the mandibles of most halfbeaks elongate at all? A fish that has dispensed with the beak entirely turns the family's signature trait into an open question.

The Zenarchopteridae are the viviparous halfbeaks, distinguished from the surface-skimming marine Hemiramphidae by internal fertilisation and, in most genera, live birth. Sulawesi is a centre of diversity for Nomorhamphus, and N. aenigma was described alongside an awareness of several congeners in the same region, including Nomorhamphus rex, with which it co-occurs.

Morphology

Nomorhamphus aenigma is a small freshwater fish, reaching about 2.5 in in standard length in the type series. Its body is the slender, cylindrical shape typical of the halfbeaks, suited to life in flowing forest streams. In overall build it resembles other Sulawesi Nomorhamphus, but it departs from them — and from the entire family — in one conspicuous respect.

The diagnostic feature, and the basis of the species name, is the complete absence of an elongate lower jaw. In a typical halfbeak the lower jaw is drawn out into a long, fixed "beak" that projects well beyond the upper jaw; in N. aenigma this beak is simply gone, the lower jaw reduced to a short form so that neither jaw is elongate. The original description interprets this as a secondary loss — an evolutionary reversal within a lineage otherwise defined by the elongate mandible — which distinguishes the species from all other zenarchopterids.

Beyond the jaw, the species shows the modified anal-fin structures associated with internal fertilisation in this family; in male zenarchopterids the anterior anal-fin rays are transformed into an intromittent organ, the andropodium, the halfbeak counterpart of the poeciliid gonopodium. Detailed external colour and fin-count notes beyond the type description are sparse, and this profile does not extend beyond what the original account supports.

Habitat

Nomorhamphus aenigma is known from the upper reaches of the Cerekang River, near Laroeha (Larona) Village, within the Malili River basin of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. This is the same broad drainage system that feeds Sulawesi's celebrated Malili lakes, a region renowned for its endemic fishes, shrimps and snails. So far the species is recorded only from this part of the Malili basin, making it, on present knowledge, a narrow-range Sulawesi endemic.

The type locality is a small forest stream roughly 33 ft wide and about 5 ft deep, partially shaded by overhanging forest canopy and floored with a mixture of mud and gravel. FishBase characterises the species as a freshwater, pelagic, tropical fish — a water-column inhabitant of clear, shaded, running water rather than a bottom-dweller or a still-water species.

The fish shares its stream with a varied community that includes the congener Nomorhamphus rex, the ricefish Oryzias dopingdopingensis, the cyprinids Osteochilus vittatus, the goby Redigobius penango, a Telmatherina sailfin silverside, and the introduced Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus. The presence of an introduced tilapia in the type stream is a reminder that even remote Sulawesi headwaters are not free of non-native fishes.

Feeding

No direct diet study has been published for Nomorhamphus aenigma, and stomach-content data are not recorded in the cached sources. FishBase gives an estimated trophic level of about 3.1 (±0.4), inferred from the fish's size and from its close relatives rather than measured directly — a value consistent with a small carnivore or omnivore that takes mostly animal prey.

Halfbeaks generally are surface- and mid-water feeders that take drifting and falling invertebrates — small crustaceans, insect larvae, and terrestrial insects that land on the water — together with some plant and algal material. In a shaded forest stream like the Cerekang headwater, allochthonous input from the overhanging canopy (insects falling from the vegetation) is a plausible food source, but in the absence of a published dietary analysis this remains inference from the family rather than an observation specific to N. aenigma.

Its loss of the elongate lower jaw invites questions about feeding mechanics, since the halfbeak beak is often linked to surface and drift feeding; whether the beakless form reflects a shift in diet or microhabitat is exactly the kind of question the species' name flags as unresolved. Here the honest position is that the feeding ecology of N. aenigma is data-sparse.

Mating

Like all Zenarchopteridae, Nomorhamphus aenigma reproduces by internal fertilisation. The female's eggs are fertilised inside her body rather than externally, and the species is viviparous — it bears live young rather than laying eggs, as confirmed in the original description.

In the viviparous halfbeaks the male transfers sperm using a modified anal fin. The anterior rays of the anal fin are remodelled into an intromittent organ — the andropodium — which is the functional and developmental analogue of the gonopodium seen in the New World poeciliid livebearers, though the two structures evolved independently. Courtship and copulation in Nomorhamphus typically involve the male approaching and positioning alongside the female to achieve internal insemination; detailed mating behaviour has not been documented specifically for N. aenigma.

As in related livebearers, females of viviparous halfbeaks may be able to store sperm and produce successive broods, but no sperm-storage, brood-frequency or mate-choice data are recorded for this species. The reproductive specifics beyond the basic viviparous mode are not captured in the available sources and are treated here as data-sparse rather than filled by guesswork.

Breeding

Nomorhamphus aenigma is a livebearer: after internal fertilisation the female carries developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young, the reproductive mode shared by the viviparous halfbeaks. This much is established by the original description, which explicitly characterises the new species as viviparous.

Beyond that, the breeding biology of this particular species is essentially undocumented. FishBase records no reproduction or fecundity data for N. aenigma — brood size, gestation length, and the mode of embryonic nourishment (whether the young are provisioned largely by yolk, in lecithotrophic fashion, or receive additional maternal supply) are not reported in the cached sources. In the genus Nomorhamphus more broadly, broods are typically small relative to the prolific New World livebearers, and the young are born as comparatively large, well-formed juveniles, but these are genus-level generalisations and should not be presented as measured values for N. aenigma.

Superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages — occurs in some viviparous halfbeaks, but there is no record of it for this species, and it is not asserted here. The breeding section is, in short, one where saying less is the correct course: the species is a confirmed livebearer, and the quantitative details await study.

In the aquarium

Nomorhamphus aenigma is, as far as the record shows, a scientific discovery rather than an aquarium fish. Described only in 2020 from a single Sulawesi stream, it has no established presence in the ornamental trade, and there is no published husbandry literature specific to it. Aquarists should treat any fish offered under this name with caution, since Sulawesi halfbeaks are easily confused and the genus has a tangled history of misidentification in the hobby.

Other Nomorhamphus species are kept by specialist livebearer enthusiasts, and their general requirements give the best available guide: cool to moderately warm, clean, well-oxygenated water with gentle to moderate flow that mimics a forest stream, a calm surface-oriented community, and a varied diet weighted toward small live and frozen invertebrate foods. These fish tend to be sensitive to poor water quality and to dislike high temperatures, reflecting their origins in shaded, flowing upland water rather than warm lowland ponds.

None of this should be read as a care recipe for N. aenigma specifically — it is extrapolated from the genus. Given the species' apparently narrow range in the Malili basin and its undescribed conservation status, the most appropriate stance is that this is a fish to study and conserve in place, not one to seek out for the home aquarium.

Conservation

Nomorhamphus aenigma has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. No published assessment exists for the species, and FishBase records it as Not Evaluated (NE). Having been described only in 2020, it simply has not yet entered the assessment pipeline, so there is no conservation category, year or numeric Red List identifier to cite.

The absence of a formal status should not be mistaken for safety. On present knowledge the species is restricted to the upper Cerekang River in the Malili River basin of South Sulawesi — a narrow range that, by itself, would make any local threat to that stream disproportionately significant. The documented presence of introduced Nile tilapia in the very stream from which the species was described points to one such pressure: non-native fishes are a recognised threat to Sulawesi's highly endemic freshwater fauna, alongside habitat disturbance in the surrounding forest.

The Malili lakes system and its connected rivers are a global hotspot of freshwater endemism, and newly described, range-restricted fishes like N. aenigma are exactly the kind of species that can be at risk before they are ever assessed. A precautionary reading — narrow range, introduced competitors, no formal evaluation — argues for treating the species as a conservation priority pending proper study, rather than assuming it is secure.
