Taxonomy & naming
Nomorhamphus brembachi was described by Vogt in 1978 and is treated as a valid species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for fish nomenclature. It belongs to the genus Nomorhamphus within the family Zenarchopteridae, the internally fertilising halfbeaks, and sits in the order Beloniformes alongside the needlefishes, sauries and flyingfishes. This places it in an entirely different part of the fish tree from the more familiar New World livebearers (guppies, mollies and their relatives in the family Poeciliidae): the two groups evolved live-bearing reproduction independently, a striking case of convergence.
The genus name Nomorhamphus combines Greek roots referring to the beak-like jaw structure of these fishes (rhamphos, a bill or beak), while the species epithet brembachi is an eponym honouring Dr Manfred Brembach, a German aquarist and photographer associated with the discovery and study of the fish. FishBase carries the species under SpecCode 24748 and cross-links it to the Catalog of Fishes record (genus 1278, species 9284), confirming the valid combination.
The family Zenarchopteridae is sometimes referred to in the older literature simply as the freshwater or viviparous halfbeaks, and the internal arrangement of its genera — Nomorhamphus, Dermogenys, Hemirhamphodon and Zenarchopterus among them — has been revised repeatedly as their reproductive biology has been studied. Nomorhamphus as a whole is a Sulawesi-centred radiation, and N. brembachi is one of several congeners restricted to the island's streams.
Morphology
Nomorhamphus brembachi is a small, elongate, surface-oriented fish. FishBase records a maximum length of about 2.5 in SL, drawn from Kottelat and colleagues' 1993 survey of the freshwater fishes of western Indonesia and Sulawesi, which makes it one of the smaller members of its genus — notably more compact than the better-known N. liemi. The body is slender and pike-like in profile, suited to hanging just beneath the water surface and darting at prey.
Like other Nomorhamphus, the species has a relatively normal-length lower jaw rather than the greatly extended "beak" of the long-jawed halfbeaks such as Dermogenys or the marine Zenarchopterus; the mouth is nonetheless large relative to the head, the equipment of a top-water micro-predator. The upper jaw is short and triangular. Detailed colour and meristic descriptions for this particular species are sparse in the accessible literature, and what is reliably documented is largely confined to gross size and proportions — data on this species is genuinely thin.
The genus shows sexual dimorphism: females grow larger than males, while males tend to be the more colourful sex and carry the modified anal fin used in mating. Courtship in the genus is an active, display-led affair. Hobby observations of related Nomorhamphus describe the male flaring and displaying to the female before manoeuvring behind and below her to attempt fertilisation. Notably, the female appears to signal her readiness before mating occurs, which makes fertilisation less indiscriminate than the constant sneak-mating seen in guppies — and is thought to be one reason these halfbeaks breed less prolifically in captivity than the poeciliids. These behavioural notes derive from genus-level accounts (chiefly of N. liemi) rather than from N. brembachi specifically, and should be read as the expected pattern for the genus.
Females grow larger than males, and the larger-bodied female is the one that carries and nourishes the developing brood internally. Unlike the guppy, there is no strong evidence of large-scale long-term sperm storage driving repeated broods from a single mating in these halfbeaks; the documented picture is one of more deliberate, less prolific reproduction.
Breeding
Reproduction in Nomorhamphus is live-bearing: after internal fertilisation the female carries the embryos through gestation and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. The standout feature relative to the small, numerous fry of poeciliids is that halfbeak broods are small but the fry are large and well-developed at birth.
Genus-level hobby accounts report modest brood sizes — a small female may produce only three fry, with later and larger broods running in the range of four to eight, and bigger females yielding correspondingly larger broods. The newborns are substantial, on the order of two centimetres, and emerge as surface-dwelling miniatures that immediately accept small prepared and dry foods, so that newly hatched brine shrimp is not strictly required to start them. Nomorhamphus brembachi is an oddball kept mainly by livebearer and biotope specialists rather than a mainstream community fish, and reliable husbandry detail for this exact species is limited. The husbandry notes that follow are drawn from accounts of the genus and should be applied with that caveat.
Nomorhamphus are surface-oriented stream fish that appreciate cooler, well-oxygenated water than many tropical aquarium fishes; hobby reports of related species describe them held at room temperature, tolerating conditions from the high teens into the low twenties Celsius, with sudden cold drops noted as a stressor for fry. They are social but maintain a pecking order, with mild intra-group squabbling, and males can be territorial toward rival males; keeping a single male with a small group of females is the commonly recommended arrangement. As surface specialists they benefit from open swimming space at the top of the tank and a secure cover, since halfbeaks are prone to startling and jumping.
Feeding is undemanding once the fish settle — small frozen, freeze-dried and dry foods are accepted — and the fish's calm, mid-difficulty care profile suits an aquarist who already keeps livebearers and wants something further from the beaten path. Given how little species-specific data exists, anyone keeping N. brembachi should treat it as a generalised Sulawesi halfbeak and watch the animals themselves closely.
Conservation
Nomorhamphus brembachi is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 22 January 2019 (species ID 90981418). A Data Deficient listing means there is not enough information on the species' distribution, population or threats to assign a meaningful extinction-risk category — it is a statement about the gaps in our knowledge rather than a finding that the fish is either secure or imperilled.
For a narrowly distributed Sulawesi stream endemic, that data gap is itself a concern. Restricted-range freshwater fishes on islands like Sulawesi are inherently vulnerable to localised pressures — habitat alteration, water extraction, pollution and introduced species — and the absence of population data makes any such impacts hard to detect.
