Taxonomy & naming
Nomorhamphus ebrardtii was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Canna Maria Louise Popta in 1912 from material collected on Sulawesi (then Celebes), and is treated by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as the valid name in the original parenthetical combination, reflecting a later generic reassignment. It belongs to the genus Nomorhamphus within the family Zenarchopteridae, the internally fertilising halfbeaks of South-East Asia and the Indo-Australian archipelago — a lineage long bundled with the egg-laying marine halfbeaks (Hemiramphidae) but now recognised as a distinct freshwater and brackish-water family within the order Beloniformes.
The genus name Nomorhamphus combines Greek elements — nema, a filament or thread, with rhamphos, a bill or beak — describing the characteristic projecting lower jaw of these fishes. The specific epithet ebrardtii is an eponym honouring Friedrich Clemens Ebrardt (1850–1935), who studied history and economics at Erlangen, later Göttingen, and completed a doctorate at Tübingen in 1872. The species carries FishBase SpecCode 23404 and Catalog of Fishes species identifier 31577.
Within Sulawesi's halfbeaks, Nomorhamphus is a genus prone to taxonomic flux — the island has radiated a cluster of closely related, often locally restricted forms, and species limits have been revised repeatedly as new material is described. For N. ebrardtii specifically the published wild data are thin, so several life-history details below are drawn from family-level patterns rather than species-specific study.
Morphology
Nomorhamphus ebrardtii is a small, elongate, surface-oriented fish with the projecting lower jaw — the "half beak" — that gives the group its name. FishBase records a maximum length of about 3.5 in total length (after Kottelat et al., 1993), while the specialist importer Aquarium Glaser reports aquarium specimens nearer 2.5–3 in; the difference likely reflects wild versus captive stock and the sexes, females in the family generally running larger than males.
Colour is the species' most distinctive feature in the hobby. Dominant individuals develop bright orange-red fins and an orange stripe along the belly, while subordinate fish stay comparatively plain. This is not a fixed sex difference so much as a status signal: both sexes maintain a strict social hierarchy, and full colour is expressed only by the dominant fish of each rank, fading in animals lower down the order. The body is otherwise a translucent to silvery base typical of a pelagic, near-surface swimmer.
The defining structural difference between the sexes is reproductive. As an internally fertilising zenarchopterid, the male bears an andropodium — a modified anal fin used to transfer sperm to the female — the halfbeak counterpart of the gonopodium seen in New World poeciliids. Females lack this structure and tend toward a deeper-bodied form when carrying developing young.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Sulawesi, Indonesia, where it lives chiefly in smaller brooks and streams. FishBase classifies it as a freshwater and brackish, pelagic fish of tropical waters, recorded across a water temperature of roughly 75–79 °F, pH of about 6.7–7.5, and hardness in the region of 5–12 dH. As a surface specialist it occupies the uppermost layer of the water column rather than the bed.
Sulawesi's running waters are typically clear, well-oxygenated and moderately flowing, and hobby sources stress that N. ebrardtii needs clean, oxygen-rich water with a roughly neutral pH to thrive — a reflection of the brook habitats it comes from. The tolerance of slightly brackish conditions recorded in the literature points to populations that range toward lower, coastal reaches of these drainages as well as the upland streams.

Feeding
Nomorhamphus ebrardtii is a surface feeder, taking almost all of its food from the very top of the water column — the foraging mode its upturned mouth and projecting lower jaw are built for. In the wild it feeds mainly on insects, snapping up terrestrial and aquatic arthropods that fall onto or hatch at the surface, and probably also takes pollen and other small floating organic matter. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.1, consistent with a small carnivore-leaning omnivore.
In the aquarium it transfers readily to prepared diets, accepting small flake food and freeze-dried foods, but it does best with a varied menu weighted toward small live and frozen invertebrates that mimic its natural insect prey — items delivered at or near the surface, where the fish naturally looks for food. Floating or slowly sinking foods suit it far better than anything that drops quickly to the bottom.
Because it is a hierarchical, surface-bound feeder, spreading food across the water surface and feeding in modest amounts helps ensure subordinate individuals get their share rather than letting dominant fish monopolise a single feeding spot.
Mating
Reproduction in Nomorhamphus is internal, the central trait that sets the Zenarchopteridae apart from the egg-laying marine halfbeaks. The male transfers sperm to the female using the andropodium, a modified anal fin that is the halfbeak equivalent of the poeciliid gonopodium; fertilisation therefore takes place inside the female rather than over scattered eggs.
Mating behaviour in N. ebrardtii is bound up with the species' conspicuous social hierarchy. Both sexes maintain a strict pecking order, and the bright orange-red coloration of dominant fish functions as a status and presumably a sexual signal — colour intensity tracks rank, so the most dominant individuals are also the most conspicuous to potential mates. This makes social structure, not just simple pairing, a key part of the reproductive picture in the aquarium.
Species-specific detail on courtship sequence, the frequency of mating, and whether females store sperm for successive broods was not found in the sources consulted, so these points are best treated as data sparse for N. ebrardtii and inferred only cautiously from the internally fertilising habit shared across the family.
Breeding
As a member of the Zenarchopteridae, Nomorhamphus ebrardtii is viviparous: following internal fertilisation, the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to fully formed, free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. Quantitative breeding data for this species — gestation length, typical brood size, and whether nourishment is purely yolk-based (lecithotrophic) or supplemented by the mother (matrotrophic, as occurs in some relatives) — were not found in the sources consulted, and superfetation (carrying broods at more than one stage of development simultaneously), which is documented in certain livebearers, is not confirmed for N. ebrardtii. Nomorhamphus ebrardtii is a fish for the attentive keeper rather than the absolute beginner. Hobby guidance recommends keeping it either as a pair or, better, in a group of ten or more, which lets the natural social hierarchy distribute across many individuals and reduces sustained pressure on any single subordinate fish. Because it is a surface dweller, surface area and a secure, well-fitted cover matter — halfbeaks are prone to jumping and to startling against the tank front.
Water management is the crux of keeping it well: the species needs clean, oxygen-rich water with good movement and a roughly neutral pH (~7), within the broad envelope of about 75–79 °F, pH 6.7–7.5 and 5–12 dH recorded for it. Stable, well-filtered conditions matter more than chasing exact numbers, and as a stream fish it appreciates flow and high dissolved oxygen rather than still water.
Feeding should be surface-oriented and varied, leaning on small live and frozen invertebrates with flake and freeze-dried foods accepted as supplements. Its peaceful but hierarchy-driven temperament makes calm, non-competitive tankmates and a well-structured group the safest setup; nervous, jumpy behaviour in too small or too bare a tank is the most common difficulty reported.
Conservation
Nomorhamphus ebrardtii is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 22 January 2019 by Daniel Frikli Mokodongan. The Data Deficient category means there is insufficient information on the species' distribution, population status and trends to make a reliable assessment of extinction risk — it is a statement about missing knowledge, not a finding that the species is secure. The species is not listed under CITES or CMS.
As a Sulawesi endemic restricted to streams and brooks, the species is potentially exposed to the pressures that affect freshwater fishes across the island — habitat alteration, water quality decline, and the spread of introduced species — but the sparse data behind its DD listing mean these remain general concerns rather than documented threats for this particular fish.
The responsible course for aquarists is therefore caution and good record-keeping: sourcing captive-bred stock where possible, never releasing aquarium fish into local waters, and treating the species' Data Deficient status as a reason to value, rather than overlook, accurate husbandry and provenance information.
